A letter from WWI 16:13 - Apr 9 with 2677 viewsDarran

Just been given a file of old family letters and I know some people like this kind of stuff.

This one shows that in 1913 my great grandfather bought my great uncle out of the army for £18.
He signed back up in 1914 and got killed in action in France in 1916.
(We're a lucky family us)

I hadn't until now. They would make a great exhibit as he date and place labelled them as he went along. I shall make enquiries.

They'd appreciate it.

If he was serving with a Welsh Regiment then The Museum of the Welsh Soldier at Cardiff Castle would be an appreciative recipient too, mate.

I couldn't think of a worse job than a wartime submariner. Brave lad.

Wikipedia says Vivid was a gunboat rather than a sub.

Still must've been bloody terrifying, of course.

Average London house price in 1913 £750.

Which is £80,000 in todays money. Although house prices have moved at a higher rate than inflation.

Looks like there are a number of 38th welsh division lads buried there.

I may be heading to the langemark commemorations in July, if I get the chance I'll pay a visit.

All quiet on the western front is also a must read if you are interested in all that.

My grandfather also served in North Africa and Palestine.

Incredible historical pieces there dazzler. As has been mentioned museums would be interested in your stuff, as would your local comprehensive school's history department. I've been privileged to accompany several trips to the battlefields and visited many cemeteries. It's something everybody should do at least once in their lives.

It's true that the navy don't make it simple, renaming boats.

I assumed(!) the photo was from WW1.

Hence I figured she was the gunboat that became a shore establishment (is that a training ship? Dunno) in 1912.

Are you going to Langemark in an official capacity?

The wife found Krieger's sculpture of The Mourners very eerie when I took her there,

Not in an official capacity. There was an application process, by welsh assembly, to go to the 31 July events in Belgium, i, haven''t heard anything yet, hopefully my WFA connections will help.

The grieving parents is equally moving.

I'm not sure how old you are, mate, but did you ever go to the old WFA meetings at The Fusilier on Walters Road by any chance?

The Grieving Parents. I'm sure there was a thread on that a year or so ago, unless my memory is playing tricks again? I first saw that Kollwitz sculpture at Vladslo I'd guess around the 1978/79 mark. It is, I think, the saddest thing I have ever laid eyes on.
