And Everton have fined him £300,000. The PFA should be all over that. I don't know by what right an employer could impose a sanction, additional to the courts, for a motoring offence?

Depends what's in the contracts about 'professional behaviour' and legality of any sanctions. They do fine players for missing training etc, so it might stand up, it's only a week's wages after all. It's probably more of a PR stunt anyway. Doubt they'll insist on collection. He's the only player really doing anything for them.

Fines are means tested. The costs were £170, he wasn't fined. His sentence was the two year driving ban and the community service. [Post edited 18 Sep 2017 18:57]

When I was fined for a motoring offence I had to fill in a form detailing income etc so the magistrates could decide on the level if the fine. I f *cking hate magistrates. Usually middle class, often retired types with no idea of the rigours and difficulties some people face in life.

Mate of mine who's also a civil servant got a final written warning for the same offence as Rooney. It's very much a sackable offence in our job.

The community service is a better idea, as long as they don't water it down and make him do something like coach kids. 100 hours of scraping up dogshit or repainting graffiti would be better.

Agree. Will be interesting to see what the community service will be though. Who decides that?

A fine of £500,000 as long as it went towards helping the victims of drink driving.

They should also donate a substantial amount of money to the charity that helps prostitutes deal with the trauma of having to sleep with Wayne Rooney.

He was licking his lips (or potentially those of his customers) at the thought of delivering "Meals on Wheels" until they handed the driving ban on top.

Rooney punishment on 20:49 - Sep 18 with 2005 views | Sirjohnalot | If I can explain about the sentence today. Rooney wasn't fined, as such, he was given unpaid work. The sentencing guidelines outline what the Court is obliged to sentence any person before the court, irrespective of who they are. The thinking behind it is that a Prince or a Pauper will get the same ban irrespective or where they are in the country. He blew 104 in breath, the guidelines say that if you blow between 90 and 119 you are looking at a ban of between 23 and 28 months along with a community order. The District Judge had to give 1/3 off the sentence so had he ran it to trial he would have been sentenced to 150 hours unpaid work. The financial penalty would have been a mixture of CPS costs (£85) and a mandatory victim surcharge, both of which are fixed by law. If he had been fined, which is what the defence were asking for, he would have faced a massive fine. (There's no limit) The DJ refused this saying that the unpaid work would be harsher (he probably was aware that Everton had already fined him) which means that he, effectively, had both. Luckily, I was in Warrington today, so missed the parade (it's my local court)

The Probation Service. if he can do some unpaid work, in some way befitting his job, they'll try to fit it around that.

Yes, but also an electrician would be able to fix a Youth Club lights, a painter would do the same put paint, a plumber etc. Just because he a gobshite footballer, doesn't mean he shouldn't use his skills to help others. If he coaches under privileged kids, this is better than his working in his local Oxfam isn't it ?

Assuming community service is actually meant to benefit the community and not some act of petty schadenfreude so people can say "ha ha Rooney's being made to pick up dog sh!t" then 100 hours coaching and working with some underprivileged kids is exactly what he should be told to do. Not really no. Coaching kids would be no kind of punishment for Rooney. It's the sort of thing he'd do now and again for the club anyway.
