Is this the next big thing?

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/jan/07/britain-age-segregated-countries

There is very little cross generational socialising any more. We have elderly people suffering isolarion and lonliness and young people needing empathy lessons.

There are places, though they are fast dying out, where a diverse range of people of a wide age range used to gather and socilaise happily for hours....local pubs.
You don't get many 60 plus people down Wind Street of a weekend.

Churches, that's another place though to be honest you'll not find me in a Church, I won't even go to a Church funeral anymore.

What is the answer? If we are to unite the country this is yet another issue to be solved.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I don’t think it’s the next big thing, I think it’s a huge problem at the moment.

It’s a direct result of government policies over a 40 -50 year period now, which has seen people have to move away from their communities for work, and house prices have a massive impact on both ends of the home owning market - the young, who can’t afford to buy, and the old, who sell off property to pay for care, family or to live due to low incomes.

It’s been particularly prevalent in the last 10 or 15 years in my experience. I’ve lived in my current house for 11 years and when we moved in, there was a mix of ages, a few old people, some younger people. Not now. The older people largely have either died, or sold and everyone buying has been almost identikit - always people in 40s or 50s. No one younger or older. Lots of nationalities.

It’s a shame as there is definitely less of a community feel now. In fact, there is only one older lady left, and she’s the one I talk to most frequently. Partly because she’s the best source of local gossip! I don’t know many neighbours any longer (some I wouldn’t recognise even) whereas 10 years ago we all knew each other.

On a related note one of my old haunts has closed after a hundred and twenty years, Lis. Cooke’s Pie & Mash on Broadway Market in Hackney. The reason? "I want to stay here but the people aren't here anymore. There's no more East Enders here,” according to the proprietors wife, Grace.

East London is unrecognisable from the place I knew thirty years ago. The community has been completely atomised.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Yeah some of the vitriol a lot of the older folk have had to put up with over the last few years from a vocal minority of screaming little brats is disgusting.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I was in a local pub a while ago, a bloke came up to me and said, “I know you from somewhere.”
I said, “ Yes, I’ve been living 4 doors away from you for the past 30 years.”

Do you think it's been deliberate? Have succesive governments set out to isolate us from each other, to split up familes and friends because we would be easier to control if we had less social cohesion? Or has it just been the unintended consequence of a series of self serving governments intent on doing as as they please?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Cut in community centres has had big impact.

I tried to find something social for my mum to do about 6 years ago and all Social Services centres for OAP gatherings had closed or where very far away.

Biggest killer for OAP is loneliness and isolation

I wouldn’t think so.

An unintended consequence of many policies. Some of which were done with good intentions. The manic drive to get 50% of the population to university for example. Done with the best intentions (although foolish in my view for reasons that this thread is not about) but likely to result in greater numbers of young people moving away and staying away. Not all, of course, but many.

One reason for the change of course has been the exodus of the ‘East End’ en masse to Essex.

But I’d venture that one constant feature of the East End is that it has always been home to London’s latest wave of immigrants. For a very, very long time. That is still the case.

There’s more to it than just the relentless third world influx, intense pressure came on the old east London from a different direction entirely, as you will no doubt know through so-called gentrification owing to its close proximity to The City.

The wife had relatives dotted across east London and we were talking the other day about a cousin of hers who had moved recently out to the country from E1. What used to be a proper, knockabout east London street in Stepney has seen developers swoop and divide the old family homes up into flats (apartments they call them in the sales spiel) and punt them for about 600k a piece, that’s four to what used to be a house. Incredible really.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Yes, I agree with that as well.

It’s rapidly changing as more and more wealth gets concentrated on smaller and smaller parts of the country. We’ve spoken of our mutual disagreement with that many times.

Many places are soulless as well, as so many flats are empty at weekends and holidays. And the ‘community facilities’ much promised, are, of course, often slow in delivery, if delivered at all.

You’ve put your finger on it. A lot of the monied incomers are just seeking a convenient weekday domicile, the Idea of community simply isn’t part of the equation.

Shoreditch is heading that way too at a rate of knots.

The phone addiction is weird.

When I’m walking the dog, the number of people I see walking their dogs glued to their phone and not interacting with their pet is incredible.

I don’t look at my phone when I’m out of the house unless it rings. And even then, I never answer unless it’s close family until I’m home. I also don’t have apps on my phone (it’s way too old) like Facebook / twitter etc. I’m obviously the one that’s out of touch though as everyone else does.

Absolutely bang on, social media, has ruined the need for getting together, I've chatted about this to a friend of mine on many occasions, the problem is as you have said, for many you don't need to meet and chat, because it's all on Facebook and other mediums.Time was you'd ring someone, now there is basically no need,it's all out there for all to see.
Humans are social animals and this need to socialise is being erroded
The older generation, perhaps feeling isolated, due to the lack of inclusion, I know some will say nonsense, but that is the reality.
I don't want to over generalise, however, the lack of community spirit is disappearing at an alarming rate, folk get into their cars, go to work and come home and lock the doors behind them, no need to go out for food or go to the cinema, we are self contained within our little boxes. Is it going to get better, no it's not.
Society is breaking, in some areas it is already broken.

“Time was you'd ring someone, now there is basically no need,it's all out there for all to see.“
Very true. Technology certainly shapes society and not always for the better. We were friendly with a Polish family here in Germany back in 1990. They hadn’t been here that long and one of the things that they didn’t like about their adopted home was that nobody just spontaneously visited each other’s flats. People phoned first !
