They've built themselves up into one of the wealthiest nations on Earth in the last 30-40 years by making themselves into the sweatshop capital. Much like the UK did during the Industrial Revolution.
Be interesting to see how/if that changes once this is over. Think a few nations will be asking themselves how much business or dependence they want to have with the Chinese Government.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

In my experience Doc, money doesn’t give two hoots who it does business with.

Like Builth said, that works on all levels.
How many people just buy the cheapest stuff they find on eBay even if it does take a while to come from China or Hong Kong? If people stopped buying Chinese or Chinese made products, the money would shift elsewhere. India maybe.
The Japanese goverment is already offering incentives for companies to take business out of China, and we already know that Trump was itching for a trade war before all this. Could be interesting times.

From what I've heard coming from Trump and some of his like minded types It would not surprise me if things do rather change with trade/manufacturing once this is all over. I suspect there will be an even greater hardening of attitudes from the USA regarding China.
1:18s comment (extremely damning and profound!) about PPE does rather give an impression that PPE, will in future have a far greater likelihood of being made outside of China.

There will be a hardening off attitudes of the world AGAINST America. If a world institution doesn't do what (Trumpian) America wants they leave the institution, if they no longer feel that a trade alliance favours America they whine and blame everyone else and claim it is unfair. They constantly lie, sling mud and behave in an undiplomatic manner. China, EU, Coronavirus, anyone left of Mussolini are all blamed for (Trumpian) America's problems.
It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. - Carl Sagan
Interesting that they received a grant to up scale manufacture at the same time as trying to develop a vaccine. It says that the Autumn is ambitious and it seems to depend on how widespread infection is over the testing period.

Everything crossed that this works.
They started human trials earlier this week.
They have 500 people to be trialled. Apparently 5000 volunteers. The interesting challenge is finding people that they can guarantee haven’t had the virus already.

These people are unbelievably brave.
Yes lots of people willing to put themselves at risk in different ways in this pandemic for the good of others.

There are and they are amazing.
One thing that surprises me is that there seems to be a lot of people who say they'll be unwilling to use a contact tracing app. I'm not a big fan of having my movements followed by authorities, but in this case I'd allow it tomorrow.

It’s the same with the anti vaccine people. If a vaccine comes out and the medics say it’s safe I’ll take it as soon as possible. Any slight long term risk will be more than outweighed by the horror of this.

Indeed! The way so many have run towards the eye of the storm as opposed to away from it is extremely humbling, along with the many acts of volunteering, charity, selfless endeavour, kindness and true community socialism etc.

For all those people who want a World with no vaccine.

Same here. But people worldwide will need to be very vigilant about how governments continue to use such technology when the immediate need has passed.

Just look at the World without ONE vaccine!!
I read some stuff yesterday from a bunch of absolute nut jobs screaming on and on about Bill Gates.
Largely right wing Americans. I have no idea what they’re going on about but they are absolute loons. Going to shoot people who try to vaccinate them apparently.

I see little difference in the government using the technology and facebook using it which appears to have been going on for ages.
I agree with the general point about emergency powers not being abused though. At least here it automatically disappears after two years (I think?) In some countries it’s more permanent I believe.

The difference between the two is that with Facebook people are (at least in theory) making a choice.
Most of the emergency powers in the UK’s Coronavirus legislation have to be reviewed regularly and, as you said, expire naturally after a period of time. I’ve no doubt that there’ll be attempts to make some of them permanent and the government has an unassailable majority for the next four and a half year. Just something to keep an eye on.
