Just a footnote the vaccination act of 1853 made it compulsory to vaccinate young children. Smallpox was not longer endemic in the UK by 1930.

Later small outbreaks were always traced back to foreign nationals bringing smallpox into the UK, usually seaman when visiting port towns.

Yes, there was 100% uptake of the smallpox vaccine at the time, yet there were still huge outbreaks, and the vaccination proved to be useless, but by 1930 Living conditions had improved so much .

There are diseases which have declined despite there being no vaccines , Scarlett fever and whooping cough in the US being some, and measles was considered a mild disease in the 60s

I'm not saying be anti vacc, just that is not the magic cure all it's been made out to be. Once again, common sense, distance, masks and hygiene will work, howver asking that from thois population is being naive

Whooping cough -Bordetella pertussis, is like diptheria, part of U.K. and US vaccination. Used to be part of the old DPT triple vaccine (with tetanus and diptheria) but now part of the 6 in 1 vaccine

I do wonder if this announcement had been made last Monday would the election result had been any different?

It can't have been ready in October as these are preliminary results pending another 70 plus infections.

Plus over 80 million had already sent their postal ballots in.

The Donald is grasping at straws.

I'll have the vaccine as soon as I can, which won't be soon I'd say. There's lots of older and sicker people thn me, and there's the NHS staff too.

Someone said we had 10 million yesterday but on the radio this morning they said 20 million.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

The vaccine was successful smallpox was eradicated in the UK by 1930. It was eradicated by use of the vaccine nothing to do with better living conditions. Smallpox is a virus and better living conditions do not prevent the spread of a virus that is why we still have flu and cold.

Smallpox wasn't eradicated until 1979, that's 180 years since it's inception. It didn't prevent large scale outbreaks after it was introduced either. That's not what i would call a success.

We don't really die from flu and colds, as they did in the past because we have better conditions. we are stronger physically and cleaner, we have better diets and warmer houses too.

‘Is the end in sight’ good question

Perchance I am leg end, was a documentary rather than fiction, there are many useful videos on the interweb with survival tips for the potentially ensuing post vaccine zombie apocalypse.

FAO (for the attention of) Neath Jack. This is a post, joking (possibly neither effectively nor appropriately) about the fact that in the science fiction? film ‘I Am Legend’ (not me personally of course, although maybe ;) - that is a wink) a mass vaccination programme turned most of the world’s population into vicious zombies that infected anyone they bit. Ironically the cure was another vaccine. Obviously I sincerely hope this is not the case with the vaccine that is the subject of the OP (opening post), but perhaps a staged implementation plan, to be on the safe side.

Smallpox was around for over 4000 years not 180. The mass vaccination program worldwide did not start until 1960 and was successfull in eradicating one of the deadliest diseases in the world in only 19 years. A great undeniable success for science and vaccination.

I guess some people still think the world is flat.

The 1870 smallpox outbreak was the worst outbreak in England ever, and occurred afer 70 years of vaccination with 100% coverage in many areas, demonstrating smallpox vaccination was of no use whatsoever.

Why can't you be more objective?
The FDA were made aware of the imminent production of the vaccine in October, but did not support the President when he stated a vaccine would be available soon.

"“I’ve been in vaccine development for 35 years,” William Gruber, Pfizer’s senior vice president of vaccine clinical research and development, told STAT. “I’ve seen some really good things. This is extraordinary.” He later added: “This really bodes well for us being able to get a handle on the epidemic and get us out of this situation.”
In their announcement of the results, Pfizer and BioNTech revealed a surprise. The companies said they had decided not to conduct the 32-case analysis “after a discussion with the FDA.” Instead, they planned to conduct the analysis after 62 cases. But by the time the plan had been formalized, there had been 94 cases of Covid-19 in the study. It’s not known how many were in the vaccine arm, but it would have to be nine or fewer.

Gruber said that Pfizer and BioNTech had decided in late October that they wanted to drop the 32-case interim analysis. At that time, the companies decided to stop having their lab confirm cases of Covid-19 in the study, instead leaving samples in storage. The FDA was aware of this decision. Discussions between the agency and the companies concluded, and testing began this past Wednesday. When the samples were tested, there were 94 cases of Covid in the trial. The DSMB met on Sunday.

This means that the statistical strength of the result is likely far stronger than was initially expected. It also means that if Pfizer had held to the original plan, the data would likely have been available in October, as its CEO, Albert Bourla, had initially predicted."

I don't see why Trump should have been able to take any credit for the vaccine that would have been totally undeserved.

It received no state funding, wasn't part of operation warp speed and the brains behind biontech are Muslim German immigrants.

Perhaps they just help off announcing to ensure a neutral playing field in the election. An excellent move.
