Ban of petrol and diesel cars 11:29 - Nov 14 with 2726 viewsonehunglow

Being brought forward to 2030 then.

Given the price of electric cars, people will simply either driver banger causing more pollution or simply bin the car.

Troubled times ahead

Good luck trying to enforce that.
There are over 600,000 unlicensed vehicles in the UK and 1,500,000 unlicensed drivers on the UK roads.

Currently the 3% of unlicensed drivers are involved in 18% of the UK road deaths.

Ive made this point previously regarding "banger"/unfit/untested vehicles.

Some seem to think Road Traffic Laws apply to all members of our communities;well they don't .Any decent Police reality programme will evidence just what cretins are on the roads, unlicenced, uninsured, drugged and intoxicated. The "Pigs" love stopping these.

A very basic error in your calculation there are 4.45 litres per gallon if the pump price per litre is the £1.13 you quote a gallon cost 4.55 × 1.13 = £5.09 a gallon.
Current uk average per litre is £1.24 will be a bit cheap at supermarket .
While some cars can indeed do 50 mph cruising on a motorway the same car will be luck to get 30 mph around town.

Official mileage cost.
Petrol engine 15.8p
Diesel engine 13.4p

Average fuel efficiency mpg petrol 36
Diesel mpg 43.

2020 q2 power generation
44.6%

As you are a typical luddite you will know doubt ignore figures from independent bodies who have access to far more facts and figures and no doubt have carried out proper research.

You just don't get it do you.
The actual price of the PETROL or DIESEL is not £1.13/litre it is £0.35/litre the other £0.78/litre is TAX.
Which is not on your wonderful electricity.
And here is the proof

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne

My car does 44mpg around the streets on short journeys and 55mpg on long journeys, but more modern engines and diesels do better.
Averages are wonderful things, when they include all the old and very powerful cars that still do less than 20mpg.

Typical of you to use the second quarter of 2020 to try and make your point. The middle of the Pandemic in spring & summer when demand is at it's lowest. Absolutley typical green propaganda. How about taking the previous full 12 months excluding exceptional circumstances instead.
To suggest that the National grid is not as good as green propaganda web sites is laughable.
You are truly brainwashed.

If we had all the local shops back you wouldn't be loaded down with heavy bags because you'd be out getting some shooping (real, fresh food) every other day.

Imagine having frsh fruit, vegetables and meat. No heavily processed foods. Imagine cooing from fresh every day and having the consequent health benefits of the extra exercise and good food?

What a revolutionary idea, it'd never happen.

Not in the Pandemic you wouldn't, well at least I am not.
I was walking the mile and a half round trip 3 times a week before COVID, now I use the car for a once a week shop to reduce exposure.

As I see it there are major issues with the move over to electric cars.

First is obviously the ability to charge the vehicle. Many live in properties where they are not able to connect the car to a charging point where they live particularly if you live in a flat in a city or have to park on the street wherever you can. The only long term solution I can see is a portable power pack similar to something you use for a mobile phone, put it in the car overnight to charge the car and back in your house during the day to re charge. Currently the size of these would be impractical but with research hopefully the size could be reduced to a manageable size.

Secondly there are not currently enough electric cars on the road to have a viable second hand market to help those who want to go electric but can't afford it. My solution on this would make it compulsory for all motabillity cars to be electric in 2 years time. There are approximately 650,000 motabillity cars on the road on 3 year contracts, by the time you factor in early contract ends when people pass away and benefit is withdrawn there is nearly 250,000 going into the second hand car market every year. This would really push the change forward. Radical I know, but major changes need to come in for this to work.

You must be the only person who believes that petrol and diesel cars do not cause any air pollution or cause deaths due to respiratory disease.

UK figures are that 28,000 to 36,000 premature deaths occur in UK due to long term exposure to air pollution.

And you actually believe those figures?
Have you looked at the conclusions, may shorten life by a few days.

I suggest that you also look at the official percentage of air polution by car exhausts compared to all other sources.

Did you not read mu post on Tyre pollution being 1000 times worse than exhaust pollution, which EVS make worse?

I guess there were people like you in the 1960s who despite overwhelming evidence that smoking caused cancer carried on smoking claiming people were being brainwashed.

Just read the evidrnce, listen to scientist and experts and make you own mind up. You just need an open and an enquiring mind.

You are the one that needs the enquiring mind, because you are not prepared to accept that Car exhaust emmissions are not the big bogey man that you have been led to believe, they are just the easiest target.

In our whole school we only had one kid with Asthma.

According to the MSM it is currently £40Billion a year, but compared to the cost of Borris's operation moonshot at £100Billion it is not much income.
They just love to take and spend ourhard earned money.

Still lost revenue, but I'm sure they done the maths, you know to screw us.
And btw, when do they actually think that EV cars will be affordable to us mere mortals. And the batteries don't last forever, fancy having a bill for a couple of grand cos the batteries are knackered. The technology is going to have to come along in leaps and bounds, before it becomes affordable for all.
Im wondering if this is a VHS v Betamax type scenario.

Never actually used any insulting terms towards you.
A luddite is someone who does not believe in progress it is not an insult.

Just as I never took offence at you saying I had green tendencies and was using greed mis information when I was quoting from facts from independent research bodies that have nothing to do the green lobby.

I would never vote for the greens as they would take us back to the stone age.

I am all in favour of progress based on scientific evidence.

I believe in progress and 1100 year old windmills however modernised making intermittent electricity are not "progress", that is why they were replaced by steam and then fossil fuels for the majority of applications.

Let us agree to disagree, you believe the in renewables & EVs and I don't.

In the 1950's there were roughly 4 million cars on the UK roads. Now there are over 34 million. The population has also vastly increased from around 2.5 billion to nearly 8 billion with the subsequent increase in burning fossil fuels.

The pollution levels aren't just a problem at one point in time, they are a build up, a gradual destruction until, as most scientists agree, we will one day hit a tipping point.

By a grim coincidence I've been forced to take time off work today because of a huge fire at a tyre storage yard downwind of the office.

It's been burning for about 48 hours, sending giant plumes of black smoke all over the place. Carbon dioxide, cyanide and sulphur dioxide in the air. 100+ firemen struggling to put it out.

Why don't you do some actual research instead of guessing?
The "scientists & medical professionals" suggest that it is particulate matter "PM" that cause premature deaths and Asthma and they measure it in 2 sizes 2.5 micron and 10 micron.
According to official Government statistics since 1970, which is after the Clean Air Act was introduced, PM2.5 emissions have been reduced from 500 thousand tonnes down to 107 thousand tonnes, a reduction of 78%.
PM10 emissions have been reduced from 640 thousand tonnes down to 175 thousand tonnes, a reduction of 73%.

So unless you are suggesting that Fossil Fuel particles are very much more dangerous than the particles from other sources blaming Car exhausts does not add up.

Especially when they make up such a small percentage of the overall emissions of particulate matter.

Please take 5 minutes to read for yourself where the pollution actually comes from.

https://www.gov.uk/government/

ps all other pollution shows similar reductions, just follow the links at the botom of that page.

They chose the 1970s to start those charts and I can assure you that the 50s and 60s were very much worse than 1970. I know as I lived through it, ask anyone who lived in a major city in those days.
Sulphurous smogs and soot covering the surfaces of buildings, both the air and the surfaces were filthy.
If you were out in a smog and blew your nose afterwards your hanky would be black with soot.
