| Is Potter top drawer.? 22:06 - Feb 3 with 5942 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Winning at Anfield with Dan Burn at wing back. He must have something about him. He did well with Swansea with John, Celina, McKay with Courtney Baker Richardson leading the attack and Nordfildt in goal. Remarkable. All these players failed the non negotiables except CBR who was just too blunt an instrument for Coops. He took the 'Non Negs' too far at the Den on his debut which always led me to look favourably on the lad. He made his comeback for Barnet last week up agaisnt Joe Lewis for Torquay. I always keep an eye out for the man as he is a proper battler and very strong. i hope he does well.

I think he'll be lucky that Newcastle are so poor, I can see an improving Fulham catch them. And they have a big game at West Brom Saturday

Brighton have won 7 PL games in 14 months I wouldn’t be so sure. Hope they get relegated, as Thornbury said in another thread the overrated Potter is not as good as Coops.

I’m not bothered either way, but they won’t go down, he’ll keep them up. Disagree completely on Cooper being better manager though. Proof will be in pudding when it’s all said and done and we look back on their careers as top flight managers, assuming Cooper gets there.

Well at Swansea (with less resources) he done a better job than Potter by getting us into the play offs last season. I’d be amazed if he doesn’t do that again this season.

Potter took over a complete basket place club heading one way, had us back to playing football something near to how we used to. Enjoyed watching us under him, so did Brighton unfortunately. Definitely not surprised to hear Pep thinks he’s the best English manager at present. Hopefully Cooper can get us up, his recruitment here has been top notch, better than Potter in that regard and it seems as if Scott is an upgrade in McCauley, but Cooper won’t survive in the Premier League being as tactically rigid as he is here, it’s a different ball game. Will have to see how he does.

Cant have been that good we couldn't defend set pieces and stuck by the worse goalkeeper I have ever seen play for us in 46 years.

Mulder will go down as the most overrated keeper we’ve ever had in my book, didn’t rate him at all and could never understand the criticism Potter had for playing Nordfelt in front of him who started a lot of our moves off with his distribution. We were in the infancy of what was a long term plan for Potter but he abandoned it and jumped first opportunity, that can’t be forgiven but that doesn’t make him a bad manager, far from it in my book. Set pieces were a serious issue though and the improvement since Margetson took responsibility for that has been incredible fair play. Like I said though, we could argue all day about it. We’ll have to see how both get on in their careers. [Post edited 22 Feb 2021 22:50]

Not really interested in what they go into achieve though. Only what they have done with us and Cooper wins hands down. He may not play pretty football but its effective and he has us challenging for the PL. Potter got nowhere near that and the squad was not bad either.

It's going to be close, with Fulham 3 points behind Newcastle and 4 behind Brighton. Newcastle are a basket case, but have both Brighton and Fulham to play, with Fulham v Newcastle the final match of the season. Brighton finish the season home to Man City and away to Arsenal.

Cooper sorted out the set piece problem, credit to him bringing in Margetson using his FA contacts. I'm not really interested, I just think Potter is the better manager, by a distance.

Potter is a 'Jenkinista' manager in the mould of Martinez Rodgers and Laudrup. In the dark days of 'park the bus' in the Premier league this is what fans demanded. HJ pulled a rabbit out of the hat yet again. Swasnea teams under these managers hat 45% possession as a minmimum against anyone including manchester city. More often 60%. I have no doubt Potter would have got Swansea to top 6 last season. His signings were poor at Swansea though.

I believe so too. He had to steer us during a time we had players who couldn't play until they waived their appearance fees, the James saga, offloading as many big hitters as we possibly could in one window, Jenkins leaving mid way through the first season. His recruitment was poor though I agree, Cooper has done very well in that regard using his connections through the England age grade sides. He also has what looks to be a cracking club appointment in Andy Scott helping in the background I completely understand it's a results business, it was under Monk aswell when we came 8th and I had the same gripes with him as I do with Cooper now. I love the way he has taken to the area and the way he speaks to the press, always has times for the fans etc and that's great, I just think his game management is seriously poor and he has a plan A with nothing to fall back on when things start going against us. Nothing personal against the fella I'm sure he's a lovely bloke. [Post edited 23 Feb 2021 11:43]

Agree with a lot of that but what do you mean by no plan B? As I hear that type of remark repeated by some people. Plan B to me would mean a change of shape / formation / system? Which he does when needed. Thankfully if hasn’t been needed too often as plan A is working so well ...

Agree with your plan B definition but disagree fundamentally on the ‘he does when needed’ - clearly up until we took the field in the second half on the weekend you could argue he hasn’t needed a plan B (despite several matches, incl previous one vs Forest, where we were bland & toothless but managed to nick a win/draw) however we still need one & I’ve seen nothing to suggest we have one. We have a plan A minus (like usual plan A just with fringe players) & we have a so far ineffective last minute.com plan where we take off one of the CBs & throw on a more offensive player in the last 10/15 mins hoping to get a goal but not a genuine plan B where we set out intentionally to play differently either during a game to combat circumstances or from the outset due to our pre-match views of the opposition’s set-up.

To many supporters a plan B would involve changing the system / shape / formation during a game and then the personnel too. To bring on different players who offer something as an alternative. That happens. And then randomly changed further during a game as it unfolds and as developments permit. I see that happening. But I also see that our manager doesn’t make changes unnecessarily either. You cannot rigidly plan every eventuality ahead of a game as it’s unrehearsed entertainment isn’t it. No one knows ahead of a game how exactly it’ll pan out. But I think it’s wrong to say that we don’t have a plan B. As we do. We probably have a plan C and D too. And E. May be F and G as well. 😆

When it has come a time when we have changed formation, we have looked all over the place. People will come back and say "we scored the winner against forest", we looked all over the place as soon as he made the change in formation, which makes me think we don't work on much else, which is one of the reasons we look so comfortable at 352, which is a plus I suppose but when it comes to needing to change something we don't have the tools, see Derby away as an example. As we are now, I honestly would never change formation, we become to wide open, most i would go is putting on someone in a genuine attacking midfield role like an Ariolla, Dhanda instead of central midfield players like Fulton, Grimes and Hourihane (he is not an attacking midfielder according to Villa fans and I haven't seen anything of him to disagree with them). When the chips are down, as they were against Hudds twice, Derby etc, and it hasn't been many times and credit to him for that, he seems to just launch on all his attack minded players and hope for a goal from somewhere, there never seems to be any thinking about it. It's not all all bad, he's done a brilliant job for us in general, his recruitment has been spot on mostly, he speaks well in the media and he seems to have a tight knit group of players playing for him, he seems to do alot for the community and he seems to love the fans here. I like him as a bloke, I used the word gutless before and got pelters on here and it's maybe too harsh a word, but his game management and his lack of using his squad when we have players out on their feet comes across like that to me I'm sorry.

You're right. When we've gone to a back four our wing backs cannot seem to adjust and play as full backs. The writing was on the wall against Forest. The change made us worse and Forest dominated even more from that point on. The fact that our non full backs continued to play as wing backs and combined for the winner shouldn't blind anyone to the problem. Bidwell and Roberts are excellent wing backs and both have thrived from the change after the first lockdown. On the odd occasion that we've gone to a back four both are constantly out of position and the opposition get goal side down the flanks at will. They are either incapable of changing or the work hasn't been done on it. Keep a back three but we need to find the right midfield blend and link between the midfield and the forwards. That's where we're lacking. We need a box to box midfield powerhouse. Fulton is capable of it at his best but I reckon Smith is the best option. That would allow Hourihane to look for the ball on his left foot around the edge of the area and he'll do the rest.
