"It doesn't matter," he said. "It doesn't matter if they are (tired) or they are not - it's the season and the schedule we are in. "Even if they are, it doesn't mean you can't play well and win, so it's irrelevant really whether they are or they aren't." ------------------------------------ I'd like to see the reactions of some of the players after reading that. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo [Post edited 1 Mar 2021 17:28]

Nottingham Forest Home, Roberts last minute header in a game where the better side lost. The results are not up for debate, it's the consequence of the lack of rotation up front, and the work Lowe and Ayew have had to get through without any rest period is costing us now. The difference in performances now from earlier in the season backs up my point completely. Brentford's drop off also backs it up, despite you using them as an example previously. |
Where did I blame Morris for the game against Huddersfield? I said when he came on we immediately conceded 3 goals and when he went off it stopped. I'm stating a fact. The point being he has hardly showed any sufficient impact on the side to suggest he should have been starting. He did ok, and didn't have time to show more before being injured. Potentially due to being in his off-season. You are saying lack of rotation but we changed 3,4 and even 7 starters in the games you listed and had pretty good results in them. Playing a game 3 months ago doesn't mean you are tired now. I can only suggest sports science is not your strong point? 4 days and a professional footballer will fully recover. Brentford's drop off suggests nothing of the sort, you are shoehorning that to suit the narrative you want to push. They had a bad period earlier in the season too, as did Norwich - most clubs do.

He was our biggest threat against Man City with his pace and running in behind, he came on against Norwich and had a stonewall penalty turned down. He showed more than enough to know he would have been more effective than what we have seen from Jamal Lowe for the last 17 games. Playing a game Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, then flying away on international duty in Ayew's case absolutely means these players are not recovering, the performances indicate that, hell, even Andre spelt it out to everyone on live tv. Not a coincedence.

And no doubt he would have played more had he not been injured. He was in his off season and at a different fitness level than the rest of the squad, he got injured when about to play his most league minutes in a game. No it doesn't. Playing Saturday then playing Tuesday means that those playing on the Tuesday may not be full recovered, but that doesn't mean the next Saturday they won't be. You don't stockpile fatigue. Ayew was right, the squad would have been tired when he said it, as would other teams and any other players that didn't have 4 days recovery. That's football and especially football this year.

That is football this year you're right. Other teams also would be feeling it, but us more than the other 23 teams looking at that table, and looking at our performances in fact. Another one to agree to disagree on :)

That table doesn’t include the key areas of examination and understanding regarding physical fitness. The only games where someone can have a genuine gripe regarding fatigue are the ones that come within 96 hours of the last and we haven’t performed well due to lack of rotation in that particular game. That fatigue doesn’t carry over once the sufficient 4 day rest has been achieved. So stating players are tired now because they played back to back 3 months ago for example is scientifically flawed and doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Huddersfield, you had a point and I agree with you that we should have maybe done more to rotate in that match. That’s the only example so far where it seems there is any sort of point to be made. From what I can see we have either performed very well in those type of games, or rotated heavily - sometimes both at the same time. [Post edited 8 Apr 2021 14:46]

Its not the sa,e I recognise but I played squash at County level and South Wales Premier league. Mentally as well as physically demanding....and usually playing at the end of a day and travel..County games at weekends...But this would be on top of the 40 or so hours put in with day job. Yes its not professional football but my body was still out under strain.... Also to answer JasBennet then out to the left flank for the left wing/full back to collect. I get frustrated as I struggle to understand how so called pro sports people can claim fatigue....they are monitiored and the back up and support for the modern day player is much superior to that of say 40 years ago...and as I say those players played as many games sometimes more on heavier pitches with far more "contact" and only one sub no "rotation". Todays [players are massaged, dieted, etc ...

Because they are playing against similar, elite opponents with the same, or in the cases of the richer clubs, possibly better support. This isn’t meant to sound flippant, but if they were playing Swansea senior league, I’m sure they could play every other day without it being a factor. In an environment where they have to be a close to 100% as possible, it’s going to have an impact, particularly in a season like this one. Same for everyone, some clubs manage it better than others. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

"I think he looks knackered!" McCarthy said. "That’s slightly more than weary! "But we haven't got a replacement for him. We tried that (in January). "He has been brilliant. He is our main focal point up front and we have no one to replace him. None of the other strikers are Kieffer Moore, that's for sure. "They have all got their own attributes and skillset. But they are not Kieffer." Sounds very familiar. They spent on a striker in January and he hasn't had a look in. Tired players perform better than fresh worse ones. Sadly that's the reality Big Mick is having to also face.

Give me a 50% Connor Roberts over a 70% Kieron Freeman any day of the week.

Difference is Whittaker has looked sharper than both Ayew and Lowe, and our most threatening by a distance. We also had Morris when fit who should have played more minutes to ease the workload of both Jamal and Andre Looks like Mick hasn't taken looked into the science of four days recovery, back to 100% seriously like yourself Doc, I would put good money on the other 22 managers (apart from Cooper obviously who said "get on with it") in the Championship taking his side on this argument. Naughton hasn't played full back at all this season and barely last. While i do agree with you that in an emergency i think Naughton would play ahead of Freeman, i have seen some people bemoaning Freeman not playing. And he is a senior full back in the squad. So not sure why he should be ignored or not be included in the discussion? Add into the mix that Naughton may also be required to play centre back and may not be able to play at right back. But above all it was part of the wider point that people need to think of the potential consequences of dropping better players for inferior ones purely because they assume they'll be fresher.

In your opinion, of course. I think he has looked very naïve. Which is probably down to his lack of experience. I think he's had 1 shot on target in 12 attempts or something crazy like that. He doesn't seem to know when to shoot and when not to. If I was an opposing defender I would breathe a sigh of relief to see him starting over Lowe or Ayew. The opposite of get on with it is to down tools. I'm sure none of the other managers advocate the opposite of what Cooper stated.

Yes of course, my opinion. No goals in 17 is it for Jamal? Ayew 2 from open play in the same amount of time. If all round game was up to scratch I would always stick up for them, but we aren't stretching defences, we aren't holding the ball up, we aren't doing anything of any note in final third come to think about it. If defenders are worrying about them, it's not coming across like that.

Jamal and Ayew have runs on the board as it were. I didn't day defenders were worried about them, I said I would be relieved to see Whittaker who has scored 1 in 31 professional appearances and 4 in 16 in his various age groups at country level.

Of course you can stockpile fatigue. They are not just playing they are also travelling and sleeping in strange beds if they stay overnight. Their body rythms do not get a chance to settle. They are not "resting" for those days in between games they are training on some of them.

That's part and part of being a footballer. All of our players travel and sleep in strange beds, even the subs. However after 4 days of rest a footballer won't show any further improvements with any more. The studies are clear. In between games they are definitely ''resting''. We have a whole facility for rest and recovery which is essentially all that happens in between matches. Rest doesn't mean feet up and sleeping. The body benefits from light exercise after heavy physical exertion due to lactic acid build up in the muscles, its all part of the rest and recovery process. You can stockpile fatigue over a short period of time if you are not getting the required rest, but that isn't the case. Matches are being referenced from months ago as to a reason why someone may be tired today, that's scientifically nonsensical considering between then and now they would have certainly had the rest required to recover. Formation to 4, Naughton to right back, Roberts time to refresh. This is all too little too late for me though, form gone, confidence gone, legs gone.
