” Laurence Binyon , just to ask what gave him the inspiration to write one of the greatest war poetry of all time considering he never served.”

It was reading the newspaper reports of the rearguard action covering the retreat from Mons in August 1914, mate.

Thanks for posting. Considering the level of censorship at the time and the timing of the publication he managed to convey accurately but without appearing to convey any form of jingoism (which was prevalent at the time) the true affects of the conflict.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,

England mourns for her dead across the sea.

Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,

Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal

Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,

There is music in the midst of desolation

And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;

They sit no more at familiar tables of home;

They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;

They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,

Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,

To the innermost heart of their own land they are known

As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,

Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;

As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,

To the end, to the end, they remain.

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

My Grandpa, to see if he really is the man I think he is.
Spike Milligan
Rob Brydon
Sandi Toksvig, all 3 for the laughs.
Jimmy Stewart
Alan Curtis
Owain Glyndwr, to find out what actually happened.
Catullus, seems rude not to!
Julius Caesar
Cleopatra,
Bert, my father in law. Because my wife misses him so much.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Not jingoism exactly but it’s certainly redolent of Euripides and what the ancient Greeks celebrated as the ‘kalos thanatos ’ - the brave and beautiful death.

Poetry of the early period was like that. The horrors of Loos, the Somme and Paschendaele lay ahead.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

I think the problem is, there are so many great and very interesting people, just picking 12 is hard work.
There are so many questions to ask historical figures!
