| Thank you Welsh government on 15:31 - Mar 19 by exhmrc1 | The situation in Cardiff was that the staff were in buildings for Llanishen which for a number of years had been talked of as not being fit for purpose. It was built in the late 60s or early 70s. Even without office closures the was always going to be plans to relocate it. There had been talk of it moving to Cardiff Gate and just off junction 33 for a number of years. Ty Glas housed nearly 2000 staff. When they were planning a new office of 300-4000 staff it was always going to be built somewhere in the Cardiff area and for several years there had been sites looked at in Cardiff City Centre. The big site originally being looked at was on the other side of the railway station. The idea was it would be close to the station to allow people to travel from the valleys, Newport and as far as Swansea easily be train. It was compounded by HMRC's plan to close all its offices over the next 6 years and relocate into 13 centres. Those are the facts. Sorry to actually talk about something I know something about having worked there for many years and being friendly with people trying to keep offices open. This was HMRC's brainwave and is happening throughout the UK over the next few years. It had nothing to do with the Welsh Assembly despite you and others as usual trying to apportion the blame to them. This might give you some background into what they plan was. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/bus https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/bus [Post edited 19 Mar 2021 15:32]

That's the way I remember it too. I can't blame the Senedd for it but I have no doubt they would have encouraged it. After all, we were consulted about where the Assembly would be based only to be told later it was always going to be in Cardiff, they wasted tens of thousands on a pointless consultation to give the appearance of democracy and they have done that several times since. Roll forward in time and now we have a Westminster government talking about decentralising, we have the BBC sending staff back to Wales, we go around in circles, wasting millions if not billions and for what?

HMRC management have been an absolute nightmare over a number of years. They decided to close a network of local offices to save money. Face to face was too expensive for them. It didnt matter to them that many people older ones mostly couldnt use the internet and actually welcomed the support they were given in offices. They had plans to try to get people away from writing as it was the second most expensive form of communication. They wanted to force everyone to use phones or preferably internet as it cost less. When we dealt with phone calls locally we had a target to answer within 5 rings. 40 minutes or longer it took to get through on the phone to the contact centre. One of the idiot managers in Ty Nant even told me that customer service had improved and people could contact 8 till 8 to which I replied except nobody answers. This had absolutely nothing to do with anybody in Cardiff Bay. They tried to get Swansea as a satellite office but the idiots running HMRC decided otherwise. They wanted this 13 office plan and that was all that mattered. With nearly 2000 staff in Cardiff they were never going to move things to Swansea.

| Thank you Welsh government on 08:09 - Mar 19 by Whiterockin | When I voted for the Welsh assembly, I was led to believe that it would not be based in Cardiff but travel around Wales and be inclusive and be for all of wales. Yes I hold my hand up, I am one of the gullible fools. |
I remember Plaid wanting to do this, they wanted the Assembly to be taken to different regions around Wales and not sit every single day in Cardiff. Why or why do people vote for right wing unionist parties when it's not good for democracy, their communities, their health or their pockets, I will be voting Plaid (again), vote for the home team I say. I am sure the Welsh assembly had some input. After all they helped the BBC to build it's brand new Cardiff headquarters and as a reward the BBC are relocating 40 jobs from London to BBC Cardiff.

Plaid are correct, Welsh history must be taught, not just British history but Welsh history, people don't know the history of their own country, that needs to change.

There’s not the time in secondary education to specialise. ‘British’ history largely comprises part of wider European history in the curriculum and they’re against the clock grasping the basics of that. If anybody wants to go on and study Aneirin or Taleisin, tackle it at degree level.

Welsh history must be taught to the young citizens of Wales as a matter of urgency, unionists probably afraid of where it might lead in years to come. [Post edited 19 Mar 2021 17:42]

The industrial revolution is covered. Bugger all happens outside of Glamorgan anyway. What is it you think kids need to study as a matter of urgency?

It's not a case of dropping anything, you could take a percentage away from a range of non core subjects to teach Welsh history.

Nothing is gained from the past. Human being are not ones to learn from history. All history did was to look for revenge and take back old lands as they did in the Balkan. LOOK TO THE FUTURE Will they teach about Welsh racism towards Black people and indeed anyone else who is "from away". It's a short life

Yep. It's a shame to see people who should be supportive of the City of Swansea throw themselves down in supplicance of Cardiff just because it suits their anti-English agenda. The advent of the Welsh Assembly then Govt has been a disaster for anyone living outside the CF postcode area, and not even all of those in it.

Why do people believe people in Bridgend with a CF postcode are any better off than those in Swansea? The same goes for people in Newport who are classed as South East Wales. The benefits are for Cardiff & the Vale nowhere else.

Welsh people studying welsh history should not be a debate. I agree though that studying British history has lots to teach us. Here is one example .

Like the communists the fascists never had any support in the UK and very few MPs . That is the wonderful thing about democracy in the UK the people decide and we avoid dictatorships and one party states. Make you proud to be British.
