| Sir Dominic of Barnard Castle on 17:48 - May 26 by Gwyn737 | Agreed, and today won’t make any difference. Firstly, many see Cummings (understandably) as unreliable. Secondly, people accept that mistakes were made and today isn’t going to changes any minds. Finally and most importantly, the vaccine programme. Nobody can say it’s not been a huge success BUT this is the Tory answer to everything now same as it has been with Brexit, shutting down all challenge. |
No vaccine will bring 130,000 dead people back. After today we know its down to the Tory posh boys in charge. Its on them. I am grateful for my vaccine. Grateful to the international scientists who created it. Grateful to the Welsh NHS who delivered it. Grateful to Kate Bingham and her team. Not giving lazy Johnson credit for other peoples hard work.

I agree the first paragraph at least Posh is nowt to do with anything. Plenty of posh living near us and fine people who work hard for a living and do not scriunge off anyone. They pay for their kids schooling as well as paying NHS . It' s a free country

| Sir Dominic of Barnard Castle on 18:54 - May 26 by majorraglan | Looking at things, it’s clear Cummings has an axe to grind, but I suspect there is a considerable mileage in some of the issues Cummings has raised. The fact we haven’t had flight restrictions etc, the comments re bodies pilling high has been verified by “insiders” to a number of journalists. We will see as they plays out. |
Yes, there is plenty of mileage but still I don't trust that Cummings is telling the truth. When the inquiry happens then we will see what can be proved and if Bojo has broken any laws, has done something heinous or shown (and lets face it, this last one looks a given) a catastrophic error of judgement then he should be punished. I don't doubt for a minute Bojo has said very many stupid things, it's his knee jerk reaction to stuff, he tries to be funny even when it's entirely inappropraite. These inquiries though, I look back at Chilcott and woner what the point is. Will it be another cover up?

Cummings wouldn't know the truth if it bit him on his arse, the majority of all politicians are liars and charlatans.

He suddenly knows all the answers though it took him 12 months to let us poor mortals have the benefit of his hindsight wisdom. I just hope he has a good amount of savings as he comes across as a vengeful individual out to get everyone who he blames for his misfortune and getting the sack. Hopefully he will slink back into his sewer as life gets back to normal thanks to the successful vaccine rollout programme.

He’s a thoroughly despicable individual who should never have been given so much power in government. Unelected and unaccountable like an EU mandarin. Johnson’s judgment in putting him in that position backs up Cummins’ view that Boris is not fit for the office he holds though. Johnson’s poor judgment has come back to haunt him here.

Yes. The first wave was a not a singular epidemic but multiple introductions from Europe that merged. Ski trips were probably the cause. The majority of the second wave was a singular source-the 'Kent' variant.

In your professional view do you think that not locking down London and the south east along with the rest of the country in November contributed to the second wave?

I think that's pretty clear, that limited restrictions allowed the new variant to establish. The whole second wave was a shambles that whilst unavoidable need not have been anywhere as severe. To an extent whilst there were some appalling mistakes throughout, there has to be a bit of leeway given withs many unknowns early on. The big and entirely avoidable problems were : 1. a test and trace system that still has major flaws. The support should have gone to regional public health directors which would have allowed systems appropriate for the area to be employed-this worked last summer in Liverpool, which avoided a major problem last July/August. No reason this could not have been integrated within NHS and PHE/PHW systems with proper support (like the Army) rather than outsourced 2. Failure to lockdown in September or October-This is very damning on Johnson who failed to follow advice from SAGE, CMO, CSA and just about every scientist in the UK but chose to follow what was predictably the flawed ideas of Henneghan and Gupta. I genuinely think this has cost 20,000-40,000 lives. There are lots of other failings-the overstatement of hand washing when transmission is ultimately and predictably primarily airborne-this still goes on. Lots of people got things wrong early on, the trick is to learn from the mistakes. I'm still not convinced the Prime Minister has.

Christina has been very consistent with this. Although sometime iSAGE could be criticised of being critical without making any workable recommendations themselves. Though be in no doubt many second wave deaths were avoidable especially when on the cusp of vaccination. The one clear success.

I'll hold my hands up there, I didn't think the ski trips were a problem but hindsight is (or should be) 100%. Though I did agree (later on) that international travel was crazy and that we knew variants were spreading because millions were still jetting off everywhere. Cummings has had a trashing from many sources, even the Guardian. It seems it's because, as many have said on here, nobody likes or trusts Cummings. I wonder why? This claim of his that he went to Durham because of "security concerns" sounds about as genuine as the child minding excuse. More lies from a man whio wants us all to feel sorry for him but it's all an act, another set of lies, in amongst the truths, designed to bury Bojo and build himself back up.

Brexit has been very successful. No collapse in Economy , pound 3 million increase in unemployed all predicted by remainers. We even have the best vaccination programme of any large country in the world. All due to the UK leaving the EU on 31st January 2020 and being able to order and approve vaccines free of the dead hand of EU beauracrats.
