| So what was the point in the vax then on 07:45 - Jun 13 by PawelAbbott | The effectiveness of the AstraZenica is 66%, even if the whole country is vaccinated then that is 20M who could be effected badly by it. The effects of the vaccines are expected to last around 9 months. That means those vaccinated first will need Boosters in August. The Delta variant is considerably more transmissible than the Kent one which was worse than the original. To ease further restrictions now with 8000 cases a day would be crazy. We will be in full lockdown by September if they don't get some level of control of this |
The real world efficacy against hospitalisation and death is much higher. Although protection is about 33% against getting infected with a single and 80% with a single AZ, the reduction in severe illness or death are 80% and 95% respectively. To be honest, I put that up regarding testing tackle, rather than getting angry at what Joe wrote, thought let's be happy. On reflection all day today, I have to say he is bang out of order with calling me selfish, and also a drama queen. I have thought about this all day long, and I put it to you Mr. JB the only selfish one is you, when does it end? It does not.. do you know, I saw a report earlier that if the restrictions end on July 21 st we will see 10,000 cases a day, forgive me I am not selfish, I have had fun in my 20's the youngsters have not, if you want to call me selfish for worrying about our youngsters future, I I don't know what to say, apart from BEDWETTER.

| So what was the point in the vax then on 10:58 - Jun 12 by Joe_bradshaw | The OP (who’s refusing the vaccination) is angry because further relaxation isn’t going to happen because people like him/her are refusing the vaccination. You couldn’t make it up. I was a shielder (extremely vulnerable) yet in the past couple of weeks I’ve been to a football match, a restaurant and a cinema all of which were slightly restricted with social distancing but I enjoyed them all and I felt safe. Stop being such a drama Queen and get on with your life. A few minor restrictions are nothing in the grand scheme of things. |
But they're not 'minor restrictions' for the many businesses and employees in industries like aviation & travel, events, hospitality etc. Plenty of businesses in these sectors are just about hanging on for dear life and every day that passes without the complete abolition of restrictions is one day closer to going out of business. We're now in the ludicrous situation where nobody I know is following any of the rules on social contact in private settings, but businesses continue to be punished in the name of protecting people from a disease that is something like the 20th biggest cause of death in the country, thanks to the success of vaccines. There's no doubt in my mind that the cost of continuing restrictions now outweighs the potential cost of reopening, and as such the restrictions need to go as soon as practicable. Do agree with your first point re people not getting the vaccine- I just don't think that cases the amongst the yet to be vaccinated (least clinically vulnerable) and the vaccine refusers (who have to accept the risk they're taking) should be used as a justification for continuing to throttle the country.

We are not being played. You are being played. You've been played so much that you are putting your health at risk. I genuinely worry for anyone from middle age up who hasn't been vaccinated. They will get Covid, unless they hide away, a lot of them will get seriously ill and some will die. The irony of someone who didn't turn up for their vaccine moaning about restrictions seems to be lost on you. I'm getting completely fed up with the anti-vaxx brigade. That odious troll, Katie Hopkins, even said that Christian Erikson's cardiac arrest was associated with having the vax. I genuinely don't understand their point. It is obvious that the vaccine is the only way out of this. They don't want the vaccine. They don't want others to have the vaccine. They don't want to wear masks, They don't want restrictions. Do they genuinely think this is going to go away after 15 months of hell?

I think the booster will be needed later in the year than August. The earliest many would have had a second dose is March, so they should be ok until late Autumn.

I expect it will be a rolling programme with Pfizer and the newer vaccines-AZ is no use for boosters as you develop immunity to the live vector too. Probably start September. Although hearing whispers that immunity from the AZ may have a much longer duration.

Thanks Prof. I was wondering, is the J&J vaccine suitable or would there be immunity to that vector from the AZ vaccine?

Don't know-It's a different adenovirus, so guess it depends how much cross-reactivity between them. The Russian Sputnik is also similar. The other one (I think we are keeping back) is the Novavax vaccine which is a subunit vaccines which according to reports today is all 90% effective. We have 60 million doses ordered of this. Still hopeful we may get an AZ variant that can be given through an intranasal route.

I suspect there will be bumps in the road for a few years, but the vaccines are better than we could have hoped for realistically. Nice to see the recognition in the Birthday honours for those who have contributed so much including Sarah Gilbert and Andy Pollard who led the Oxford team to a few colleagues here at Liverpool. Must admit the knighthoods for Peter Horby and Martin Landray who have done such a great job with the RECOVERY trial programme brought a wry smile to my face.

So don't get vaccintaed if you like and be 2 and a half times more likely to die if/when you catch the variant. I've had both doses. No ill effects here, no side effects over 2 months later.

What you have neglected to add is the the 30% who died are those with double vaccinations. ie 12 from a total of 42, which are very small numbers to work with. 23 were not vaccinated and 7 had had one vaccination. So it is actually 19/42 = 45% vaccinated. Non vaccinated is therefore 55%, not 70% as you stated. However that is not the whole story because those 19 who died came from a much smaller number of Hospitalised cases, approximately 1/3 of hospitalisations were vaccinated. So when that is taken in to consideration survival rates once hospitalised is no better whether you are vaccinated or not. The other disturbing issue from these very small samples is that the higher number of Double vaccinated deaths came from a smaller number of hospitalised cases compared to the single vaccinated cases. Suggesting an issue of treatability, age or co-morbidities perhaps. The good news is that the vast majority of those tested positive were from the minority of unvaccinated people as were the hospitalisation, although not quite so good as the positive test ratio. You get a better picture in this Daily Mail article with Pie Charts of the data, as well as some actual numbers. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne [Post edited 14 Jun 2021 17:41]
