England v Italy : Euros Final : Sunday KO 8pm BST 13:51 - Jul 8 with 9726 viewsKeithHaynes

England will play their sixth game at Wembley during this tournament on Sunday. Home advantage enabling them to reach the final along with a favourable draw from qualification from their group.

Italy payed their opening three group games at the Stadio Olympic in Rome. They then played at the Allianz in Germany and have played two games at Wembley. Sunday’s final will be their third game at Wembley.

The approach is neatly summed up by Jordan Henderson (who is a fine player, but not one who will change games) coming on as sub before either Grealish or Sancho.

When they needed to get back on the front foot, they made the wrong call. They doubled down on solidity, when what they needed was a spark.

I just simply couldn't believe he put henderson on instead of grealish, that showed his hand.

Gutless and cowardly approach, got what they deserved. The pace and guile of Grealish, Rashford and Sancho would have terrified the ageing Italian backline moving into extra time. Criminal misuse of his players and their specific talents, golden opportunity squandered by lack of risk and ambition.

They had Italy at 6's and 7's after that early goal, then Italy gradually got a foothold in the game, but if England had kept pressing a 2nd goal would have been inevitable in that first 20/30 mins I think and they could have gone on and won it, they had the play the pace in the game to have done so up to about that point, they switched the play well, but old habits die hard and Italy grew in to the game after Mancini switched things around and Italy took control, that's what cost them the Trophy not three young lads missing penalties

Rashford I can understand, he takes pens for the Mancs and he's got more time with England but Sancho and especially Saka, they looked scared. It wasn't their fault, it was a really bad decision by Southgate.
And to go with what' said before, after they scored they were well on top and should have gone for it, they had Italy by the short and curlies right then and a second goal would have made it very hard to get back in the game, but they allowed themselves to be pushed back, then they sat back.
I agree with Doc, Grealish before Henderson. When you have Harry Kane, Sterling and Saka you want the spark to come on and ignite the fire but Southgate went for the bucket of cold water!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Just remembered that Aidy Boothroyd has been haunting the youth echelons of the FA for the last six or seven years too. I can definitely see a theme developing.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

As someone wote, it was like watching the Swans but with better players.

Not read the thread but that post sums it up for me.

Saka didn't deserve that, you could lip read southgate saying to Grealish "you're sixth". He cost England dearly in the 120 minutes and then the penalties. I'm glad aswell.

I thought Rashford was a bit unlucky he beat the goalie (best goalie in the World) all ends up, tricked him but missed the target for the sake of the width of the post, unless he loses his confidence he will score all the time from the spot (more than average) but unfortunately for him he has missed the most important one he will take unless he gets one in a World cup final or something.

Predictably boring, tedious posts from an unthinking troll who chooses to paste the only negative article against Southgate/Cooperball. In a sea of multiple articles, rave reviews and huge accolades for the tremendous achievements.

Most Swans fans choose to focus on the good bits, and rightfully so.

The parallels are not uncanny. It's a hugely successful formula. Yet there's one glaring difference, which stood out in the final against Italy:

- Southgate's team bottled it in the 2nd half and couldn't rediscover the dominant 1st half performance, whereas
- Cooper's teams have remarkable bouncebackability and inner belief.

In stark contrast to Southgate's England in the Euros final, Cooper's England came back from 0-2 against Spain to smash them 5-2 to win the World Cup.

The stats:

Possession: England 52%, Spain 48%

Attempts: England 25, Spain 11

Shots on target: England 11, Spain 5

Fouls: England 7, Spain 16

There's no wonder Cooper is still being pursued by Prem league teams. The senior England job certainly now beckons for Cooper, he is way ahead on his development curve. Let's hope our owners give him the bumper new deal he has earned.

I think more praise should be given to Italy. Apart from the first 20 minutes Italy then took control .
It shouldnt be how England lost it.
Its how Italy won it.

England were once again built up as world beaters, when the truth is they are pretty ordinary. Lucky to get so far, but played most of the tournament at home.

Well done Italia.

I agree. Italy’s intricate short passing game was mesmerising. England couldn’t get the ball. Chiesa had them in knots before he had to go off. If he’d stayed on I don’t think it would have gone to penalties. He looked capable of gettng the goal. Chiellni was lucky to stay on but apart from that, Italy were clear winners all over the field.

The parallels with Cooper are from his time here and what he has in common is he bottled the fina; from the very beginning. He'd stopped using or we'd sold most of our creative players.
You can call it a succesful formula but most football fans aren't so worreid about the juniors winning something, they want senior success. Even then something you always fail to grasp is that these days people want entertainment, they don't want a drudgefest, they don't want to pay to be bored.
Defending a lead is acceptable, defending from the start, in every game and hoping to nick a goal on the break or win a penalty is not.
Italy wanted the win, once they equalised they kept pushing and the Southgate/Cooper approach was again, ultimately, a failure.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
