England v Italy : Euros Final : Sunday KO 8pm BST 13:51 - Jul 8 with 10675 viewsKeithHaynes

England will play their sixth game at Wembley during this tournament on Sunday. Home advantage enabling them to reach the final along with a favourable draw from qualification from their group.

Italy payed their opening three group games at the Stadio Olympic in Rome. They then played at the Allianz in Germany and have played two games at Wembley. Sunday’s final will be their third game at Wembley.

No, you're right and I reckon a lot of people watching last night were wondering why he brought on 2 subs with so little time left, asking them to take penalties when they are so young, so inexperienced and with more experienced players left watching. Heck I reckon Pickford would have been a better choice than Saka, he was like a rabbit caught in headlights the poor bugger.

Then to findout this morning they've had racist abuse on social media, shocking. English fans yesterday, some of them are a stain on their country, those that stormed the gates, abused other fans and stewards and this racism, they need to grow up.

As do Welsh fans simply gorging on England losing.

It says much

It really does

Wales do not get to any Final and this is our get out clause.

Reading this site and others is sickening and not surprising at all

We should also know the media does not represent all.

Tramp and others need to realise this when reports of bad behaviour become evident.

Many on here detest the English and are clearly gorging on this unabated.

Football is a perfect vehicle for this
I want to introduce some perspective and reflection.

It ain’t easy.

Some on here need a hard look at themselves and wind necks in.

It’s a very simple principle to understand, so is wanting your closest rivals (geographically) to lose.

I don’t know a lot about Andrew Neil, but if he’s a Celtic or Rangers fan, I very much doubt he supports the other in Europe.

I for one am delighted that In-ger-lund lost. As someone of Italian origins, first and foremost, I wanted Italy to win.

But like most outside England an English defeat is great. For a half a century they have been a disgrace to their country and to football. We've all seen the scenes of their drunken bullying and violent behaviour. They attack opposition fans (except for Russians) boo anthems, smash up bars and even abuse their own players.

Most countries have had problems but England have been a constant disgrace.

Long may they fail.

Same here, Welsh and British, it's not supporting England, more not wanting Continental opposition to win

"But amid all that warming pride, there are some cold facts, too: in the two hours of football, Italy were comfortably the better team even though England scored right at the very start. England were 22 minutes away from lifting the trophy but let the game get away from them and Southgate was outmanoeuvred by opposite number Roberto Mancini.

It all felt eerily reminiscent of the first big sickener of Southgate’s reign, the extra-time defeat to Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals three years ago. Then as now, England started fast, took an early lead, started to sit back and defend before realising, early in the second half, that they had lost all control of the game. Pinned back in their own box, trying to head everything away, they conceded the equaliser halfway through the second half – 68th minute there, 67th here – and never truly recovered.

You can even look at the Nations League semi-final defeat to the Netherlands in 2019 and see a similar story: a first-half lead, surrendering control of the midfield, conceding a 73rd-minute equaliser, falling to extra-time defeat.

At the heart of all of these games is the same problem: England failed to keep hold of the ball when they were ahead.

On Sunday night, England were aggressive and on the front foot at the start, and when Shaw scored from Kieran Trippier’s cross in the second minute, they were on their way to glory.

And then they stopped playing.

No longer willing or able to keep the ball, England were reduced to camping out in their own box. Maguire, usually so incisive in possession, was left hacking the ball into the stands.

England were playing as if there were five minutes left on the clock when there were still 45 to go. Defending like that is asking for trouble – you only have to slip once – and, sure enough, Leonardo Bonnucci bundled in a corner.

When Southgate made changes, it was too late."

It's almost eerie.

This is a man that knows where his bread is buttered. Jim White has somehow mastered the art of not doing this and staying in employment. To the credit of ITV and Sky they like Roy Keane because they know he will give it to them straight and is not a trumpetter like Shearer or Wright. He will articulate anger that reasonates after a deteat. No off cue shots of celebrating pundits.

Neville said England had a plan for penalties and practiced for months. Keane pointed out the Mike Tyson wisdom. "They all have a plan until I punch them in the face".

So we should support England because we are all British, do we support Cardiff in the cups or play offs if we aren't there?

You don't have to support any team that is not your own but, you don't have to hate them and hope they lose either, unless they are playing your team!
The only reason I can see for wishing another team to lose is if you have a material gain from it, as in when we all went to Preston way back when and we all wanted Blackburn to lose! It wasn't because we hated Blackburn though. There seems to be genuine hatred for England.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Great post.
Mancini outmanoeuvred Southgate, the latter was unable to counteract and implement and tactics to rest control back. It was the same in some of our games when our management team displayed similar shortcomings which is why I can5 understand the FAW persevering with new “unproven” (for the level) appointments.

Its sport simple as that, some people are looking to much into people not wanting teams to win any team, I don't want to the England team to win in football or Rugby its just rivalry, same as I don't want to see certain Clubs winning, media coverage and their fawning over players teams etc, its endless sometimes, like its been up to last nights game, ridiculous.

The hatred and racism comes from some of their own fans towards some of their own players, unbelievably.

Good points Cat & I broadly agree - I was neutral last night & if England had been the better team would have been fine with them winning (less so with the undoubted media response but that’s another thing) but they weren’t & Italy deserved too.

Usual minority of England fans let them down (again) both before & after the match but suspect few of us are surprised about that & the usual green house & stones phrase comes to mind.

For me I’m pleased for Italy as they fully deserved it across the whole tournament NOT pleased because who they beat. England should be proud of their manager & team who performed well considering their track record, yes they had a favourable route but that was UEFA’s doing & any country would have looked to take advantage of it (including Wales) if it came their way.

I don't know if they're attempting to implement an England "House style" based on keeping shape, sacrificing flair for solidity, defending like hell, making as few changes as possible and hoping to nick a goal or two, but if the former u17 boss and the current national team manager are playing the exact same way it's probably not a coincidence.

You could well be right and if you are I think England are going down the wrong road. Every team needs defensive strength but you can't just nullify your flair players and hope to score first then keep a clean sheet, that has only ever worked for a very few teams and didn't every get fed up of "1-0 to the Arsenal" and all hope we never had to suffer such a "style"?

England have some VERY talented players, they have real pace, Sterling and Saka are fast, Mount, Grealish and Foden are terrific, skilfull players, they need to find the right balance not give up on attacking if they take the lead. That was their problem in the final, they scored early and then slowly retreated further and further back, they settled for it and that was proved a bad choice.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Exactly. I wanted them to lose last night, I’ll be the same when they are in Qatar.

I couldn’t care less if Welsh people want to support them, none of my business. What winds me up is people, some but not all who don’t grasp rivalry, telling me I should support them because they are British.

Crack on and support England. Leave those of us who support whoever they are playing to do the same.

In all fairness, the vast, vast majority of England football fans don’t care about skin colour, it’s just a tiny minority who grab all the social media headlines.

The approach is neatly summed up by Jordan Henderson (who is a fine player, but not one who will change games) coming on as sub before either Grealish or Sancho.

When they needed to get back on the front foot, they made the wrong call. They doubled down on solidity, when what they needed was a spark.

They had Italy at 6's and 7's after that early goal, then Italy gradually got a foothold in the game, but if England had kept pressing a 2nd goal would have been inevitable in that first 20/30 mins I think and they could have gone on and won it, they had the play the pace in the game to have done so up to about that point, they switched the play well, but old habits die hard and Italy grew in to the game after Mancini switched things around and Italy took control, that's what cost them the Trophy not three young lads missing penalties
