Swansea City “ Can do no more “ to keep Matt Grimes 16th Aug 2021 10:51
We are being told that despite a series of attempts to tie Matt Grimes down to a new Swansea City contract he is still to sign or agree to stay at Swansea. With the transfer window closing only two weeks away our source tells us he is “ Very much in two minds about his future” The belief is he will keep his options open - now he knows how much the swans can offer him to remain in west Wales. 0

Nobody holds the aces here, ultimately its Grimes call whether he wants to sign a new contract with the Swans or walk away on a free at the end of the season
Its also the Swans perogative if they want to accept an offer or not.

Both parties would have been content with the wages and length of the contract when originally offered/signed and both have the ability to ensure its seen through... the club by refusing an offer and Grimes refusing to leave. Nobody in the wrong, just the situation.

Question is what is Grimes value to us for 1 season? 1m? 1.5m 2m? If Grimes won't commit longer term then as soon as that valuation is met the Swans should encourage him to move on. But talk of not playing him for a season is cutting your nose off to spite your face. So long as he gives 100% to the cause (why wouldn't he if he's putting himself in the shop window for next season) then he should be selected if avaialble and as RM sees fit.

For me, may be a bit on the cheap side but if we get 3m for him now, and we can invest that in a longer term replacement with some promise I'll be happy to shake his hand, say thank you vert much and good luck. He's a decent championship player, one of our most experienced (which is why Iosing him this year wouldn't be ideal) but he's.no Ferrie Bode

We've already "invested in a longer term replacement with some promise" by bringing in Flynn Downes and Liam Walsh. Fans always say they want their club to do business early but it can lead to issues when the players expected to leave either don't, or see a cooling of interest and less fees coming in than expected (see Potter's summer window).

Grimes holds the aces. He has three options - sign the new contract, sign for Fulham or someone else (if that is currently an option) or play the season out and go on a free. Whichever way, with a decent signing on fee.

All the club can do is make the best offer they can or hope he goes for the highest fee we can get.

Fully agree, talk of sticking him in the reserves until he signs a new contract is naive. If he decides to see his contract out, we will just play him until it runs out, unless we find a better midfield combination without him in it. We can’t afford to play chicken here, if we don’t play him, he will leave at the end of the season regardless.

Agree, if someone offers something in the region of £3m, I’d expect us to take it with his contract running out.

He has a better hand... but not all the aces, he is under contract with us and won't be going anywhere this season if we don't get a decent enough offer in that is acceptable.

Not really. We can’t afford to leave our captain and arguably best player run his deal down without playing him.

The player holds the aces here, the club can’t really change that unfortunately.

That is a hell of a big argue!
IMO. wWe have replacements so either he plays ball with the club or with the under 23s.

Why? This isn't a player who Is going on strike, not turning up for training or not playing reasonably well. If RM feels he's the best option why would you throw him into the U23's as a punishment for simply being in the last year of his contract?

Agree with the above poster, Grimes holds the aces but there is a joker in the pack.
If Grimes doesn’t sign a new contract and decides to ind his existing one down to be a free agent next year, IF he were to sustain a serious injury (and I don’t wish that on anyone) like Ferrie Bodde did he could end up in a perilous position - he’s taking a calculated risk.

Best course of action in my opinion is get him to sign a new deal with a sensible compromise transfer buy out fee pre agreed, so it becomes a win win for club and player.

As has been stated this is a burning candle, it may not burn down until the end of the month. By which time he may not be in the clubs plans.

Grimesy deserves to move on to bigger and better right now. He's outgrown us and no doubt he and his agent has recognised this over the last couple of weeks.

As heroic as he is, he will see that even his talismanic driving force will be insufficient in turning the current tide.

Good luck, he deserves all the plaudits from pundits and fellow pros who truly recognise his worth.

I agree with that. I guess he won’t hold all the aces until he’s still here after January.

We aren’t going to let him go unless we receive an acceptable offer. Trouble is, what is deemed an acceptable offer will decrease month by month if not week by week.

I’m sure we’ve got a plan in place for which scenario unfolds.

My view is, are we realistically looking for promotion this season? The answer to that is clearly no (we may be aiming for it, but the chances of hitting are slim).

So what is more beneficial to a longer terms goal?

1) Keeping him this season and as a result maybe finishing 12th instead of 15th, then having to replace him with nothing received for him next season.

2) Getting maybe 4/5m for him, finishing 15th then using that 4/5m to replace him.

For me it has to be number 2, unless he will commit to a new contract.

It depends on the circumstances. There is some sort of standoff by the looks of it. Fulham are the pay masters and might have a for example £9m budget for Grimes.

£5x m transfer fee plus £ 1m x 4 years total = £9 m (£20k per week)

The agent want more money for Grimes but Fulham refuse to raise their budget. The agent wants

£3m transfer fee and £1.5m x 4 total = £9m (30k per week).

Swansea might accept £4m and £1.25m = £9m (£25k a week) perhaps.

If Grimes refuses to negotiate the other option is his £0.5m wages for next season and u23 football. By that time his stock will have fallen and the potential £4m wages lost. Ryan Woods has taken an haircut on wages I suspect.

As part of the stand off Fulham might up the budget to £10m allowing £5m and 25k a week encouraging a compromise. Swansea talking a new contract for Grimes might encourage them to move.

It requires a three way compromise. I suspect Grimes signing a new deal is a non starter. Why accept £15 pw when £20pw is already on the table. Would Swansea match the Fulham offer?

All numbers are guesses and hypothetical.

If he stays here he’ll play, at least until either

We have no realistic chance of promotion or relegation
Martin decides his best 11 doesn’t include Grimes.

We won’t just not play him because he won’t leave or sign a new contract

IMO as he has one year left on the contract an offer of £3M or there about and he will be gone. That is a huge amount of money for a Championship club with no parachute payments.
