Nathan Jones gives his opinion on why Luton threw away a home win against Swansea City 19th Sep 2021 11:00
It was a bizarre game for sure, not one for the faint hearted, and I can vouch for that. Luton Town manager Nathan Jones looked slightly shocked as well as he responded to questions as to why his side threw away a three goal lead yesterday. 1

He did kick the ball away though and the rules say it's a yellow. It's a massive joke the Luton player (Cornick?) didn't see red though, it was violent conduct all day long, he could have put Manning out for weeks. Maybe that was his intention? Ebven that fella on the EFL show said he thought it was intentional, that the Luton player was looking at Manning, not the ball and had plenty of time to pull out if he wanted.
The FA won't do anything now though, because he's already been punished. At least I think that's how it works?
Football needs a citing system like the rugby except, in y opinion, if a player gets booked he can still be cited if the punishment isn't suitable as yesterdays yellow wasn't. In the same vein, if a player gets a yellow he should be able to appeal it. Isn't it another farce that you can appeal a red card but not a yellow?

Well let’s have some consistency then. They were booting the ball away when it was outr free kick when we were chasing the equaliser then the winner. The sh*thouse ref didn’t give them a single yellow when we could have gone on to win the game.

He had to card Manning in order to justify not sending off Lansbury

Has he even been asked?
Some may call this paranoid but can you imaging Manning being allowed to stay on if the roles had been reversed?
As for yellow for kicking the ball away - joke. Teams do it many times in a game and why would you be wasting time at 3 - nil down?

Ref was definitely bent over this decision

Backing off is an intentional change.
Fatigue is not.

Backing off due to fatigue coupled with instinctively trying to protect what you have in the assumption that the opposition has capitulated due to the mountain they have to climb is completely normal IMO. It’s human nature and has as much to do with psychology as it does fitness.

One thing that we can take from it is confidence. Luton are obviously not too confident in their own ability and deep down would have known that they were gifted the first half. They may have had enough belief to think that they could scrape through to the end assuming we wouldn’t improve after the break, but what they didn’t take in to account was that we had more quality waiting to come on than we started the match with.

Even including the first half sh!t show the players should take a lot of confidence form taking a point in the end.

Spot on and anyone who says that wasn’t at play is either trying to kid themselves or hasn’t been watching the game too long. It’s not a new thing.

But there were pro active reasons that contributed to the draw too. The subs as I said at the time were the right ones as was the fact we went more direct.

We seem to be getting our best results when we ditch the possession at all costs mould and actually look to attack.

Again, no it isn't. Backing off is protecting what you have, be that due to energy depletion or a natural propensity to defend what you have. Its prevalent in nearly all matches where someone goes in with a lead.

Have you never heard of the notion ''2-0 is a dangerous scoreline''... well that is the reason, not because they think the manager will tell everyone at 2-0 to back. It's your incorrect understanding of the situation and the point made.

They backed off (nobody is claiming manager told them to) for a variety of reasons, we went more direct as I showed you and corrected the line up errors. It worked.

"Defending what you have" is intentional.
Getting tired isn't.

Yep. No goals for possession or passing.

Going forward we looked much better.

At times we over ran them and that is new for us.

Russ should have learnt by now. 5 weeks should be long enough

Nobody has suggested it was intentional, only the opposite.

They tried to press for Pato's goal but didn't have anything left in the tank, cracking goal, forward decisive passing which ended up in a goal, lucky finish to be fair but still the football I want to see us playing.

If you kick a ball forward at the goal yiu might score. No chance if you strike it sideways as we do too often.l
Ntcham looks to score.

Russ picked the wrong side Saturday, I'm not a fan of the Downes/Grimes combination I believe it puts us on the back foot away from home and makes us easier to defend against at home. But in Russ's defence Ntcham may not be fit enough to play regular at present and Walsh was off pace.

I think Whittaker should have place in the squad aswell I agree.

We’ve never been afraid of going direct even when we were at our possession based best. It wouldn’t have been unusual for a Rodgers or Laudrup team to play keep ball in our own defensive third until we’d drawn the opposition out enough to break lines. Not every time but sometimes, and usually with a diagonal raking pass from someone like Ash to Routledge or Dyer. We need both in our locker, we’re getting there.

Nathan Jones gives his opinion on why Luton threw away a home win against Swanse on 16:36 - Sep 19 by ReslovenSwan1

Martin s model is to play out from the back. This notionally gives the other team cheap opportunities with the high press. It does however involve a risk of burn out and energy depletion. This can be mitigated with substitutions. Over 46 games this is going to be a real slog.

The so called "backing off" was both fatigue related and players making their own decisions to protect their own performance levels and reputations. Jones stated his team were the best in the league at pressing. The game was therefore a big challenge for the Swansea defence. Naughton and Williams in particular struggled. Naughton was out of his specialist position and Williams is learning like Guehi had to. Nathan Jones struggled at Stoke getting lumbering veteran s like Vokes, Miram Diouf and Banik Afobe to play high press.

There is an argument Pioe and Ntcham performed very well as they were able to pick off Luton's tired retreating defencers. This argument goes against the simplistic idea that the manager "made a mistake". This argument is that the draw was achieved by throwing the game plan into the bin. Quite the opposite in fact, I suggest. If Swansea had cut out the basic mistakes goals 1 and 2 it would have been easy and classy tactical stroll in the park (Pep style) especially if the Ref had done his job. Naughton for goal 2 was out muscled and then failed to leave the player to the covering defender.

Hamer was hoofing it long at one point. Not saying it’s something we need to see for 90 minutes but the playing out from the back went in the bin for a good period of the second half.

Indeed, my concern is we have only really done that twice.

Once against Bristol and he came out and said that it wasn’t his instructions and the players did it, the second was the second half against Luton when we were 3-0 down.

This needs to become a staple of our system, not just a last resort when behind. He didn’t learn after the Bristol game and went immediately back to what wasn’t working. So all eyes on the Huddersfield game for me.

I am very interested to see how we approach that one from the start. My main issue has been the strict short passing approach with a reluctance to be direct, that has never worked for us even at our tiki taka best, and it won’t work for us, that’s obvious. It’s too one dimensional.

I’m keeping an open mind on the manager at the moment. He’s very, very inexperienced but he’s exactly the sort of appointment I advocated in hope of reinstalling some exuberance and possession based style in the club. I accept ‘early days’ mistakes on the pitch to some degree and maybe not being quite media savvy enough to avoid digging himself a hole, so for that reason he gets a pass for the time being. Overall and with caution I think the signs are relatively good.

We should all be keeping an open mind on him.

Those saying he should be sacked (don’t think I’ve seen too many of those mind) are idiotic, as idiotic as those trying to make out he’s the second coming of Clough and refuse to have a realistic and balanced view of events.

For example if he sets us up the same against Huddersfield as he did in the last game, that’s not a “time” issue, that’s an unwillingness to learn issue.

A mixed direct approach with the correct starting XI however, will be a very positive sign that he is willing to learn and adapt to what we are all seeing. That’s the very nature of needing time, if he isn’t going to learn, adapt and adjust then the time factor becomes moot.

Ntcham seems to have the class to play at 70 per cent fitness and still be main man, this guy really has talent and the physically we have not had for ages.

He utterly eclipses Grimes .

It was quite shocking frankly, Catallus.

The amount of clear and obvious calls we’ve had go against us the last few weeks has been ridiculous. A lot of poor officiating in the Championship, but we’ve gotten more than our fair share recently. Hopefully we get some breaks going forward and that evens out a bit as the season progresses.

Lansbury knew exactly what he was doing, he wasn’t even looking at the ball and kicked Manning as hard as he could, literally could’ve broken his ankle. Ridiculous. He did the same thing in the first half when Downes got fouled and was on the ground, and he swung his foot right next to Downes’ head. Downes jumped up and squared up, got to love that reaction.

Karma returned the favour in the end, though, as Piröe was standing in a pocket of space on the edge of the penalty area, right where Lansbury was supposed to be, when he got the cutback from Laird and rifled in the goal with all the precision of a sniper in the 92nd minute. Lansbury ended up on his back, gasping for air and wondering how everything fell apart so quickly. Proper retribution for the idiot.

Nathan Jones gives his opinion on why Luton threw away a home win against Swanse on 14:29 - Sep 19 by jackrmee

Getting fatigued is very different to "backing off".

Backing off is intentional. Fatigue is not.

I don't think they backed off at all.
I don't think we went direct either.

Spot on, Jackrmee.

Jones was literally screaming at his players the entire second half to press higher and with more intensity. They just couldn’t, we ran them ragged.

There wasn’t a difference in the directness of our attack in the second half, but there was a big difference in the speed of our ball movement and the sharpness in the players’ movement. We had two strikers on the pitch who were making runs, dropping off between the lines and destabilising Luton’s defence, and that created a lot of space for our midfielders and wing-backs to move into and play the ball into.

As bad as the first half was, because we moved the ball slowly and weren’t playing the ball through the lines any near or quick enough, one positive was that our total domination of the ball forced Luton to run themselves to death, and we put them to the sword in the second half. There were also a couple clear chances we failed to take advantage of, Obafemi sliding in at the near post off a Manning cross and Paterson on the volley from a cross by Laird.

The combination of factors you listed are chief reasons for our remarkable comeback, as was our ability to be even more ball dominant in the second half than the first. We had 70% possession in the first half, but that rose sharply to 76% in the second half, as Luton could barely get a touch.

Definitely not a statistical indicator of going direct, it was actually the opposite - we were more dominant because we were passing the ball quicker, sharper and getting to the right spots at the right time, which opened up space all over the pitch. Absolute domination, and the first half helped lay the groundwork. Luton were dead on their feet, we scored 3, hit the woodwork once and had 4 big chances missed.

Kudos to you mate, keep calling this troll out on his BS.

Nathan Jones gives his opinion on why Luton threw away a home win against Swanse on 16:16 - Sep 19 by DwightYorkeSuperstar

It was the sort of capitulation by a manager that likely seriously harms their reputation and puts off potential suitors. They came out in the second half playing as if they were protecting a 1 goal lead in the 94th minute. It was baffling.

There was no “capitulation” from the manager, DYSS.

Jones was literally screaming at the Luton players the entire second half to press higher and more intensely, same as the first half. Difference was they couldn’t do it in the second half, we ran them into the ground. For all their goals in the first, we dominated the ball and passed them to death.

Luton “came out” and were hit hard by us, but they were clearly trying to attack themselves, they just couldn’t really. They got in behind us a couple times, missed two big chances, and Cornick had a wide open goal but hit the post. They hardly “capitulated”, they just couldn’t sustain the pressure we put them under by dominating the ball the entire match.

If only we had taken a few of the four big chances we missed in the second half, we could’ve scored five or six and been well clear. Can’t blame anyone, our players were feeling it a bit too, but adrenaline, excellent man management and proper coaching saw us get a much-needed draw. Remarkable comeback given the circumstances, well done to the lads.

Spot on, Brynmill.

Manning didn’t do himself any favours there and, in general either, as he goes down far too easily, far too often. But what happened was very clear, and Lansbury is well-known for that kind of crap.

I remember Paterson coming over quickly, Obafemi was talking to Lansbury, but mostly I think we our players just expected a red card automatically. We should’ve put far more pressure on the ref, and that comes down to Grimes. He was nowhere to be seen and he should’ve been screaming in his face the whole time.

Of course it wasn’t the plan, it’s natural.

Same in the Reading play off final, we went in 3-0 at half time and backed off in the second half. I’m sure not even Reading would say it was all them as to how they got back into it, we visibly backed off to defend what we had.

They played a huge pressing game in the first half, that takes huge amounts of energy. If anyone has had done the drill where you are in the middle of a circle of players and have to intercept the ball, they will know what closing down and the press does to you.

The subs were important, we went more direct which was also important. But so was the fact they clearly backed off.

Lol, you really don’t know what a rondo is, chap? That’s hilarious.

Some “student of the game” you are... eh? Tell me what you do “in the industry” again? I think you blew your cover there amigo, lol.

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about or what “closing down and the press does to you”. Literally none, you don’t even know what a rondo is.

You are sadly just a forum troll, you’ve obviously never kicked a ball in your entire life. Probably because this is your entire life.
