Is that why a record number of people are now in work. I guess the P&O situation is a bit too complicated for you to understand, a foreign owned company, who ships are registered abroad , running services between two different countries.
Time to change the Law to make sure only British or EU companies can only run ferry services between the UK and the EU and the ships must be registered in the UK or EU to stop this disgraceful example of modern day slavery |  |

The employment figures are excellent though the record number in work is because this is also the largest our population has been. What is craazy is there are also well over a million job vacancies. The employment figures would look truly remarkable if they were filled.
I suppose the downside with so many jobs vacant we re also seeing record numbers quitting their roles and also wages have dropped. |  |

The reason P&O could do this without notifying the UK government is because we are still operating under an EU directive that says if you are laying off over 100 people you have to notify the government of the country the ship is registered in. So this schitts show happened BECAUSE of our EU membership, not because we left.
As it turns out these sackings may well be illegal under UK employment law anyway.

It's a British company with it's HQ in Dover. It's part of a Dubai subsidiary, but it would be subject to Uk employment law, regardless where individual ships are registered. | | | |

800 people got sacked illegally under UK employment law. It was a law adapted for an Eu directive that allowed them not to tell the UK government.

They’ve not sacked any French workers- probably because the French have stronger legal protections for workers.
The parent company own Tilbury Docks which is now a Freeport, that’s something that should be reviewed if they don’t revisit and overturn the decision making in respect of the P&O sackings. I wonder if the Chief Executive was acting under orders from the parent company, or whether to something that’s been hatched in house. Th legal protection was there though. The P&O CEO has admitted to knowingly breaking the law and says he'd do it again.
The only question left now is what will the government do about it. They're saying the CEO should resign but he and anybody who knew about or voted for this action should be facing investigation and police action.
Mind you, as he admitted knowing it was illegal he has confessed so the police should just arrest him.
