Energy prices 09:59 - Mar 20 with 11401 viewsKilkennyjack

Big big profits for the energy suppliers, big big price hikes for us lot.

Shirley people will not be able to cope with such price rises ?

We should re-nationalise immediately.
Too important for the markets to handle, with a built in short term profit view of everything.

Looks like it’s linked to picking up the tab for the companies who’ve gone out of business.

I know energy rice have gone up, but I genuinely believe we are being ripped off. I drove past 3 petrol stations located in our town today, a supermarket was selling a litre of diesel for £175.9 as was a local independent Texaco garage, a nearby independent garage was selling diesel for £186.9 - all 3 are in a mile or so of each other. 11p per litres soon adds up!

That's correct. It's called 'socialising' the cost of the failure of energy companies that went out of business.

Martin Lewis is also right to be worried. Calls to debt helplines that mention the word 'suicide' have increased by 20% since the start of this year. People are getting desparate and tinkering with a couple of pence off petrol isn't going to cut it.

A lot of people are going to struggle over the coming months and I suspect we’re going to see inflation spiral upwards even more than it’s already gone up. The poor and the workers are going to feel the pinch.

Was saying to a few work colleagues, at the start of this whole shower that government paying 80% wages, business relief, help out to eat out etc. etc. if anyone thought the government and the 1% were going to roll over and say 'don't worry everyone, we got this' and all this support was coming from a magic pot a gold then you need a head wobble. Is it right? Is it eff!

On Martin Lewis, the cynical side of me says that he's also worried that people are going to turn off his website, TV and the like if all this advice becomes irrelevant to the populous though I do think he genuinely cares.

The admin assistant in work with my wife takes home £1300 a month she's a single mother with two kids. After her bills are paid she is left with about £300 a month out of which she needs to buy food, clothes and run a car.

The irony is she'd probably be better off not working.

That's capitalism for you

Under a proper healthy system of capitalism you’d have companies competing with each other to offer the best prices and service which would drive prices down. But with whatever this shitshow we live in is the energy companies have a complete monopoly, they’re all in collusion with each other to keep prices high and service crap and have support off the government in this very profitable racket.

Drove past the supermarket today and diesel had gone up 5p per litre to £1.809, but the local independent garage was still £1.759 which is where my kids then filled up. Scandalous situation the way things are going.

I am not sure why anyone would pay the extra 5p or 10p a litre.
Of course the Government could easily balance the price increases by decreasing the taxes on the fuel.
Or they could just control the prices, but they are making way too much tax to do so.

How would a single nationalised company drive down prices without competition?

Fortunately the oil companies will be paying corporation tax on their profits.

It depends on whether you believe that competition in the industry just sees big profits funnelled into shareholders bulging wallets or that they get cheaper prices to avoid fuel poverty.
Competition doesn't have to exist in every sector. We don't see it in the thin blue line or Her Majesty's forces. Also, it is possible than a nationalised energy company can invest in projects and could be mandated to intervene and provide a solution to this problem, for example, by insulating any leaky houses it supplies as well as installing solar panels and community energy projects. A nationalised energy industry could also provide joined up thinking solutions that profit focussed shareholders will overlook as the expense would affect the bottom line

Just checked my flexible tariff with Octopus.

I'm genuinely appalled.

Gas per unit has tripled since my fixed tariff ended in December with the standing charge rising from 20p to 27p a day.
Electricity standing charge is unbelievable. That has gone from 20p to just under 50p a day. The unit charge has more than doubled.

How is this sustainable?

We need a sticky with the best energy deals and top energy saving ideas.

That's not how capitalism works. Capitalism doesn't like competition it likes monopolies. It starts off as competitive then it tries to put the competition out of business, which is what we are seeing at the moment

Not sure now is the time to compare though as it’s so skewwiff right now .

So after the first day of the prices going up, my smart meter was showing the total of what I would use whilst at home during the winter months.......problem was that no one was home until around 4pm for about half hour and then returned at around 6.20pm.

I fear for some households especially come the next hike come the start of winter.

I’m paying not far off £200 a month on the SV rate at the moment which is nearly double what I was paying last year, the cheapest fixed 12 month deal I can get now is £385. Mental! I’ll stay on the SV for now.

I'm trying to find companies that offer no penalty exit fees. A standing charge going from 20 pence to 50 pence a day is robbery. That's £2.10 more a week just for the electric standing charge.

There's no need to put standing charge up, no reason at all, can understand why the Kwh unit prices have gone up, but upping the standing charge is pure profiteering, disgusting.

At least there was an energy cap otherwise the power companies would be raising their prices every week to match the huge increase in global energy prices following the end of the pandemic and tye Russian invasion of Ukraine.
That is why so many energy companies went bust the were selling electricity and gas to customers at less than they paid for it.

I think you find the energy price increases are due to the end of the global pandemic, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine and not anyone else. Prices have gone up in left wing Wales and Scotland are going to blame Nicola and Drakeford.

They have gone up word wide, but not having a storage facility is mental. We have to have a decent infrastructure but years of neglect mean we don’t. The road network is over capacity, we have a creaking electricity generating capacity our water and sewerage network is also antiquated and in need of investment.
