| Energy prices 09:59 - Mar 20 with 16002 views | Kilkennyjack | Big big profits for the energy suppliers, big big price hikes for us lot. Shirley people will not be able to cope with such price rises ? We should re-nationalise immediately. Too important for the markets to handle, with a built in short term profit view of everything. | |

Definitely the right call. I'd like to have gone a little further - maybe look at means testing the existing £400 OAP grant and redistributing. There are many who get this who don't need it.

I keep banging that drum, we shouldn't be giving money to people who don't need it and so, give more to people who do need it.

Quite often the time and money spend to carry out means tested is not worth the hassle. Although i agree that the top % shouldnt be eligible. I'm by no means well off, but know there are a substantial amount of people in worse situations than me that could use a few hundred more.

I said the same about the 150 council tax pay out, we didn't need that money and we don't need this 400 quid either, though we are not rich by any means. There are many people who need this money much more than us! They don't have to means test everybody either, they could just say anybody paying higher rate tax doesn't get it, that would rule out many people who should be able to afford these rises and if they can't then they are spendthrifts.

There's a flaw there mind when I switched jobs I was put on the higher tax rate it took me months to get it right ok I was back dated but it was a right palarva.

Trouble is a person earning £50K and paying higher tax may have a partner and family to support, a mortgage and increased commuting costs etc. A single person earning £35K may be in a better position. It's impossible to means test each case and you have to think about the practicalities of getting the money to people. A universal payment with increases for those on benefits and or disabled etc. seems a reasonable compromise if imperfect.

I would assume it is cost effective to just make it universal. The current benefits systems costs a hell of a lot to run due to the means testing measures. I don't need to £400 bit it will definitely help when the bills increase again. Costs for many are already going up now, i dread tk think the levels they will reach mid winter, many who thought they would be okay might not be.

yes there are always flaws in any of my ideas. The gist though is surely acceptable, we shouldn't be throwing tax payers money at rich people if we can avoid it? It would help if the government and its various departments were fit for purpose mind.

I think Sunak outlined the major flaw when speaking today, if you own 10 homes you get £4000. How many of those landlords will pass on the savings?

Payments are made to those who pay the council tax not the landlord.

Im sure his statement was that it would be deducted by the energy suppliers and credited to accounts. Which would make it up to landlords to pass savings onto their tennants.

Tenants almost always pay the electricity bill for their house/flat. The utility bill is in their name and paid from their bank account. [Post edited 27 May 2022 15:34]

The new interconnect cable runs inside the channel tunnel and now brings the capacity between the UK to France 4GW . Overnight the UK was exporting over 10% of its electricity generation to France to help France and the EU with its power generation shortage due its over reliance on Russian gas.

Some people don't understand the electrical generation of other countries. https://notalotofpeopleknowtha France have 50% of their Nuclear fleet currently undergoing planned maintenance & repairs preparing for next winter. [Post edited 1 Jun 2022 10:03]

Correct which is why the UK are helping them out. Does seem a bit odd that 50% of their nuclear power stations need maintenance at the same time. They generally only need major maintenance once every ten years and minor maintenance can be down while they are still operating. If planned correctly they should only ever have about 10% of their power stations off line.

Quote "Overnight the UK was exporting over 10% of its electricity generation to France to help France and the EU with its power generation shortage due its over reliance on Russian gas. We're with Octopus, we're n a fixed tariff until next April and we're paying 161 P/M. We're in credit though and building up a reserve. That'll come in handy for when we next have t choose because they'll be putting the cap up again.

No, just very odd that you claim that 50% of the French nuclear power stations are out of action do to cracks. France does not have enough backup gas power stations to make up the deficit hence the need for the UK to export power to France. I never claimed France relied on Russian gas, just the EU in general.

You have reading comprehension problems. It is a combination of planned maintenance and repairs. Try reading it a few times to see if you can get it to sink in. Nothing to do with Russian Gas, which you don't seem to realise the EU is still getting from the Russians and paying for it. They have only cut off a couple of countries. You need to get with the real world and not the one in your head.
| Energy prices on 20:08 - Jun 2 with 2776 views | majorraglan | As has been said it is a combination of maintenance and repairs, but I wouldn’t mind betting some of the maintenance has been brought forward so they can get it done now before the winter sets in and we see increases in demand at a time there are embargoes of Russian gas and oil. There was an article in one of the papers talking about power cuts for 6m customers in the U.K. 😟 | | | |

Why would there be power cuts in the UK when we have ample extra generating capacity.
