| Again some advice on 16:46 - May 5 by Sirjohnalot | Both my wife and I have very stressful jobs, long hours, hard work, lots of pressure. Hard work for next 8 years or so then wig will be hung up. Buy some land. Next to a beach or Loch, build our own house, buy a little boat and go diving,in the loch and running in the mountains, travel round Scotland with dogs, do a bit of volunteering in animal centres and relax. |
Been through this mate, only a couple of things I would say. How much is enough, don't leave it to late. Possibly look at a career change and go part time, less stress more time to enjoy life and still enough to occupy yourself. When you do finish make sure you have no regrets, once you pull the plug on employment, life will not be the same again.

If Scottish law was the same as England and Wales, we’d move today. Early 50s, we’ll have enough to be comfortable. Love my job, love life more.

Part time doesn't need to be in your present occupation.

True, but I’ve worked a long time to get in the position I am now where between us, we’ll be able to retire early.
| Again some advice on 19:48 - May 5 with 1310 views | jacksfullaces | I'm on that fine balance between finding an early retirement date (still a few years away I would think), living and travelling well in the moment with bucket list moments in the now, but then having a few good years and a bit of serious adventure post retirement. Guess we are all making those calculations, life is for living. | | | |

If it works for you financially and with your profession then go part time. Work will be there after you, where as you only have one crack at life.

| Again some advice on 17:46 - May 5 by Sirjohnalot | Thank goodness for our wonderful NHS. Similar thing happened with my mum’s illness which scuppered their retirement. Exactly why we don’t want to work into our 60s. I’ve seen colleagues work into 60s and collapsing with heart attacks. Don’t want to be working on multiple month trials staying away from home for ever more. Not thought of West Coast of Ireland but will certainly have a look. We just love Scotland. We not City people, somewhere with the beauty of Glen Coe eg. The idea of waking up and seeing the Scottish mountains and lochs or the sea is intoxicating |
If we won the lottery it would ne new Zealand or Canada for us, a large bit of land with a purpose built house.....ah the dream! The reality is though we will never get that. We are not rich but we are far better off than many, we save a substantial amount every month and we're aiming at my wife retiring at 55 when I shall be 62. Then it's travelling for us. When I had big health problems it was stress that pushed me over the edge. I walk away now, even from jobs, if stress is getting too high. I am lucky to be able to do that though. People don't give enough consideration to their health, they always chase the promotion, the nicer car and bigger house. people need to learn to be happy with what they have. There are lots of places I want to see, the Pyramids, Niagara, Macchu Picchu and many more, if only I have the time!

You have the right attitude. To adapt the Harley Davidson rider's ethos " Work to live, not live to work" All the best with your hopes and dreams

I know a few living there, one was a lock keeper not far from Fort William, another moved up there after one visit , change of life style , and loving it, running a site up there.

All welcome, hopefully in about 10 years, we’ll be celebrating Martin’s longest reign and most successful Swansea manager in history as we best Klopp’s Cardiff City to win the Premiership for the 3rd time in a row. [Post edited 6 May 2022 12:51]

| Again some advice on 23:01 - May 8 with 986 views | Sirjohnalot | It was a light hearted comment. I spend my working life dealing with the remnants of people’s behaviours which have devastating consequences. I have to look in detail at horrific things and take people through the worst points of their lives. When I come home and come on a forum like this, I try not to take things so seriously. So someone saying things like you did, I’m quite happy to laugh at myself and agree with you. It’s not about keeling over but I save what I have to regarding arguing etc for work. Thankfully the numerous instructions I’ve received over the years and continue to receive from both the defence and prosecution have more faith in my ability as Counsel. | | | |
