Candidates have until 6pm tonight to get 20 nominations from MPs to stand in the first round ballot tomorrow.

The new leader will be announced on September 5, becoming PM the following day.

Boris will have his final farewell party on November 17th, then the bailiffs will enter the next day to forcibly remove him from Downing St.

On what basis do you say she’s formidable? She may be but she’s never been tested, never been subject to a proper grilling, on a live debate, never been in front of the liaison committee, and lied about Turkey and then refused to acknowledge it. She also completely messed up her campaign. Video.

Ok I’m wrong then.
None are worthy of any respect and we nobody should vote Tory

There are lots of liars amongst that lot. Obviously the biggest is in the hot seat for now, butbthe rest are not far behind.

English, Catholic, a Tory, a divorcee, female in the military, I wonder if Welsh chapel goers would vote for her ?

Not many go to chapel around here, I know of one who drives over to their father's chapel.

If you read my reply that’s not what I said. I just question the term ‘formidable’. Zahawi was said he to be a decent man but he said today he’d have put Johnson in his cabinet. Ive respect for my Tory MP and I think Mercer seems very decent.

None of them will move away from the Rwanda scheme, all I’m

FranklyBryan,I trust neither party nor indeed most politicians but MORDAUNT is grounded for sure and at least she went to state school, unlike a Starmer .

He passed his 11plus and went to a grammar school, it was a state school when he started there and it became independent while he was a pupil there. Nothing wrong with that, the gus done well for himself.

There’s lots of media focus on trans issues and the like, most of the people I’ve spoken to aren’t bothered about pronouns and the like, they just want the politicians to grip the situation were facing and do their best to 8mprive peoples lives.

JRM and Dorries are supporting Truss, that’s enough for me to hope one of the others wins.

We all want to pay less tax, have better public services and we also have to pay for Covid, we’re also facing a huge issue with the Russians who are reducing gas and oil supplies and we need to become more energy self sufficient. The candidates need to be more honest wth the voters.

Sunak wins 88 votes in the first round, with Mordaunt second on 67, Truss third with 50 and Badenoch fourth with 40. Strong showing from KB considering she's never even been in the Cabinet before.

Interesting that of the top four candidates for Leader of the "Racist, misogynist Tories", three are women and two are from an ethnic minority background.

It would only be interesting if the women and the ‘ethnic minorities’ were representative of those that they purport to represent.

So they're the wrong kind of ethnic? Veering close to Maugham or Femi territory there.

Besides, there is also a very strong case to be made for huge chunks of "Conservative" values (not that I agree with many of those) to be very close to those of an ethnic background. Ask around at the local Mosque or Afro-Carribbean church and I'd imagine opinion would skew more JRM than Angela Rayner.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

She went to Russia a few weeks before the war and didnt know major regions of there.
That is completely inept.

Most of the candidates are pretty poor, hopefully they pick the worst and it is an absolute shtshow.
Who can top Johnson, thats the question.

OK, you hate the tories, but are youreally hoping for a schitshow with the effect that will have on every single one of us just so labour can win?

Surely any sensible person hopes whoever comes in is really good, not just for England but the whole of the UK?

After all, if whoever wins makes a massive mess of it then Labour will have an uphill task and they wont have the time, another 5 years will pass with things still being badly wrong and we could easily end up with the tories again, history tells us so.

This is a large part of why I dont and will not support ANY party, why I am a floating voter. It's our party politics, the adversarial nature of it and the desire to undo what the opposition has done that is ruining this country.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

I'd pay to see that, from a distance of at least 10 feet

On the post about Starmer, I've nthing against Starmer, he's done well for himself yes and he is probably as decent and intelligent as any of them from whichever party. My problem with Starmer is, hes a wimp. he's just too wishy washy. I had hoped for better from him. Lets face it, will all the ammo Bojo gave him, he hardly made a scratch; really, that was very poor. If I narrow it down to purely any of the nominees I could vote for, if I had to vote for someone then it'd probably be Mordaunt. I know very little of Badenoch but she seems like the least harmful of the rest. That's where it iften comes down to these days, who will do the leat harm, who is the least bad choice. A shocking state of affairs.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

What i hate are self serving, lying, incompetent individuals who parade themselves as saviours of the people. Knowing full well they would do them all over at the drop of a hat. Those coveting the top job don't give a damn about people like us.
I would agree with your last statement though, party politics is a sham. I've never quite understood why it is necessary.

Those first 3 sentences are me in a nutshell too. it's why I get brickbats from kilkenny and his ilk because they say I wont nail my colours to a mast. To which I saw, we are in a bad way and the crew are getting us shipwrecked, I need to find a lifeboat not submerged rocks.

There are hardly any politicians I would happily vote for. In fact, right now, I can't think of a single one to enthuse about. it still looks like making the best of a bad choice. That's Westminster AND the Senedd.

The point I was making was that he wasn’t sent to an independent school contrary to your assertion.

We need more MP’s (in all parties) who’ve had state educations, that would probably deliver MP’s who are ,ore 8n tunevwith what’s happening in the country and how things are for the majority of people.

Looks like tonight’s debate is off, Truss and Sunak didn’t confirm their attendance. Conservatives MP’s and big wigs are apparently very relieved as the infighting is damaging the party.

Daily Mail going all out for Truss, who it seems is keen to avoid any sort of engagement.
