Last nights defeat on penalties after throwing away a two nil lead will not detract from the bigger picture that Russell Martin continues to stand by. Three games should never be the basis for that. 0 U2 have an opinion, click above. No opinion, click below.

| Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? on 21:51 - Aug 10 with 1270 views | Catullus | We started the game with 3 players out of position and finished it with 4 out of position. Strangely it was when the experienced first teamers came on it all went bad though. We keep repeating the same mistakes over and over, the same patterns of play and they cost us goals. The person who should notice this and fix it is the one blaming others and insisting his way is the right way. | |

| Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? on 20:54 - Aug 10 by Dr_Parnassus | What? The defensive line was high due to Blackburn condensing the field, it doesn’t mean it was the midfield - it was the defence passing back and fore to each other with the help of grimes of course. In your desperate need to make an about turn (again) you are coming across very silly. This was the pass that was intercepted. An attempted ball by Darling across our defensive line to Wood. |
You're wrong. The attempted pass was by Fulton (number 4) to Naughton. Darling is on the half way line nearer the camera (he's number 6).

I just looked at positioning quickly in order to make the point. Either way, it was a ball across the face of the defence. Who did it is largely irrelevant.

That goal was a nightmare for Fulton from start to finish - and I say that as someone who, in the past, has referred to Fulton as the best passer in the whole squad. Firstly, Fulton shouldn't have found himself there. I know others say one of the midfielders drops in between the CBs, but it should never be Fulton. Because ... The correct thing to do in that instance, when he received the ball from Grimes, was to just let the ball run across him and send it back to Fisher. You don't take a touch in that position unless you're absolutely 100% confident in your touch - which he isn't. Or, if you do take a bad touch and get caught out, you've got to have the pace to recover - and he doesn't. Downes, for example, would have recovered. When Fulton did get back he sold himself by lunging in. He should have stood up and made the player shoot (I may be wrong but I think the Blackburn player was on his weaker foot). Playing around at the back is absolutely fine - we did it loads under Brendan - but it has to be the players who can do it.

Where did I accuse ploppy of an about turn and looking silly? Read the thread again before replying… (you are losing the plot here). Doesn’t matter who the players were, could have been Piroe for all I care, it wasn’t the point I was making. My point was the goal came from knocking it across our defensive line. I know common sense isn’t your strong point Raynor, but try to keep up at least. [Post edited 11 Aug 2022 9:26]

Playing it around the back under Brendan had a purpose, we had wingers and would spring attacks as soon as they were moved out of position. We don’t have wingers under Martin and pass the ball around the back just to keep possession as opposed to doing it for an attacking purpose. It’s a massive difference and one not many people are able to grasp, hence why it’s taken people so long to realise what Martin is doing is ludicrously bad. Some people don’t look further than the possession stats, you can probably count out manager among them.

All that's fine and dandy. My point was simply that the goal in question was the result of Fulton finding himself in a position, and doing something, to which he's unaccustomed and not suited. We, well you, can debate whether that's the manager's fault or the player's.

I’m not sure why you are making that point though? The point was we were playing it around our last line of defence again, of course it’s the managers fault. It’s what he asks his team to do and has done every season he has been in charge of a club.

If the problem is just that it was Fulton, this time, who dropped into the back line (and he hasn't got the quality - rubbish)... ...why then have we consistently conceded goals like this, for a year, regardless of who was in the team? Fulton was frozen out for a long time remember? We still conceded those goals again and again and again...it is systemic, a flaw in Martin's game plan, a pattern of play that can be exploited by opposition who are prepared and concentrating.

As an aside K,I might just take my Uke and belt out a few Formby songs to get us in the mood. George was,on the face of it,a happy, jolly, positive fellow but deep down he was controlled by a megalomaniac wife and was deeply unhappy . Seems apposite really

Harsh. I've been a fan of Fulton's over the last few years when others were slagging him off. He's a good passer normally and loves a tackle. But I don't ever want to see him playing square balls as the last man. We've given plenty of goals away over the last year but it's normally players doing stupid stuff, not the fault of the game plan per se - like Grimes facing his own goal and playing a blind pass to his full-back and getting intercepted, or Benda giving a pen away at Blackburn last year, etc.

Look at it again there was no pass. He was not intercepted he was caught in possession dawdling. Due to an dozy lack of awareness of time and space. Fulton jut offered up the ball and the striker took it saying thank you very much.

Yes indeed, it was a very poor first touch by Fulton. He ended up almost trying to toe poke it away. And the shame is, he didn't need to take a touch at all. Get side on, let the ball roll across your body and play it back to Fisher. Or, if you must, play it first time to Naughts. But, of course, it's the manager's fault.

What is the managers fault is the way he is setting us up to play....IT happened loads of times last season. Individual players are making mistakes because of the position they are put in and the Martin Mantra of passing and possession. Grimes should never have passed that ball straight back to Fulton But I guess none of us ever mistakes at work do we....and all our managers at work are always perfect and get it right all ways

| Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? on 17:05 - Aug 11 with 741 views | magicdaps10 | Going to point the errors of this post in the right direction. Fulton miss controls, his body shape is all wrong and the touch his too heavy and he sets the attacker up. Fulton attempts the toe poke tackle that would ultimately play the ball across to a fellow defender....this was not him playing a sideways pass but ultimately making a tackle due to his extremely poor touch. THERE IS NO WAY AT ANY LEVEL SHOULD A PLAYER BEING MAKING SUCH A POOR TOUCH. The pass by Grimes ultimetly should be played into Fultons left side, the side Fulton is moving towards and the ball then gets played easily to Darling who then looks to set sn attack down the left side. GRIMES PLAYS THE WRONG PASS TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF FULTON, THE PASS SHOULD BE GOING TO FULTONS LEFT GIVING HIM SPACE. Ultimately these are 2 terrible individual errors that these players should be understanding and will most certainly have been pointed out to them in the match analysis on Monday just gone. I can't defend the 1st Oxford goal in the week but that first goal we conceded on the weekend just sets the standard, 2 individual mistakes that have nothing to do with the "style". These mistakes then get us to start chasing the game and that's never a good thing. The 1st goal in midweek is undefendable and just needs to be played down the right by Wood, the guy is young and clearly learning but his mistake was ultimately the energy that was needed to get Oxford going. Some big things going on the next few weeks so it seems.....Right wing back is moving on quick and a creative spark is now very much needed. Anyone ask if Leeds want a striker 😬 | |

Understanding Players control judging by the Fulton F up, it now heightens the fact how good Downes is and how much a better player than Fulton he is. My one gripe so far is the time it has taken to replace Christie and Wolf......the ball is rolling quicker with the right wing back and now it seems the attacking midfielder agenda us now very much go again. I wouldn't rule out Leeds making another move in Piroe and using Dramah as part of the bait, the club seem extremely keen on this guy from Spurs in midfield and the net is being cast far and wide on an attacking midfielder. I most certainly will be expecting improvements, not to the levels of top 6 that are being made by some who realistically know that will not be the case akso....all to be created to use their sticks in time.
