Swansea City to allow Russell Martin more time ? 10th Aug 2022 11:44 Swansea City will not be pressing the panic button just yet after three games of the new season. Last nights defeat on penalties after throwing away a two nil lead will not detract from the bigger picture that Russell Martin continues to stand by. Three games should never be the basis for that.0

Exactly this.
In that game a similar situation will have happened 20+ times, more(!) the amount we play it around the back.
The opposition, knowing we won't knock it long, and knowing that we don't have anyone running into the space between the lines, and knowing that we have no width (because the full-backs are in the attacking line) are sat in, blocking the easy passes and pressing up on our under pressure players at the back and in midfield...they are waiting for the mistake, the 1 in 20 when things don't quite go right...AND THIS MISTAKE IS INEVITABLE BECAUSE NOBODY IS PERFECT.
Jesus Christ, 'twp' is actually a word that is about as mild as it gets when faced with such illogical, idiocy.
...but hey, let's wait for either; a) Martin manages to coach our players to be world beaters (we have seen from the video of him speaking to the players how ill-equipped he is to do that) or b) We are taken over by a Chinese billionaire who brings in the best players in the world, the players Martin obviously deserves (of course in that scenario Martin would be the first out of the door, as World Class players tend not to want to be coached by failed ex-MK Dons managers).
Give me strength

No points missed here.
This is the way I want us to play but we need players who are comfortable doing it and they need to stop making schoolboy errors. If we can't improve the players we have then we need to get rid. Changing the style of play to suit the players we have, or to try and steal a result (like Cooper used to do) is the sort of short-termism that ultimately gets you nowhere.
Why on earth would any Swansea fan want us to play this way?

Fulton is also incredibly one-footed so you have to play everything to his right side.
How come we end up with so many one-footed players? Professional footballers mind. They should do extra training to improve their weaker foot - Lionel Messi is excused.

Messi,Maradona are exceptions. Better remember the likes of Law Best Charlton who wiorked at their game. I recall Routledge being I credibly lop sided
Grimes is simply reminiscent of a ten yr old school kid

Because when it works, it's a beautiful thing. And I can't stand teams just lumping the ball forward - especially in the Championship where defences just eat up those balls. We played this way when we were promoted from the Championship last time - it's what distinguished us from the rest and was a major reason we survived in the PL. Other opinions are available.

When has it worked?
He’s finished 19th, 13th, 15th and currently got us in 22nd.
No idea why people think you either have to have 80% possession knocking it negatively around your own box… or be a hoofball team.
We have never played this way in our history before, let alone when we were promoted last time.

We didnt jump lump the ball forward under Cooper despite the misconception and propaganda except we were pragmatic when needed. Im sick to death of posting clips and quoting how we played....Martinez and Laudrupesque it wasnt neither was it Pullis or Wanrnockesque
Stoke away in our second season under Cooper we went one nil down as a result of a bad Geuhi pass across our defence our two goals that followeed resulted from moves which started with the ball being passed from the back through midfield the second resultong in a penalty as a result on Naughton being brought down
But Cooper is gone and we all want the "pretty" football we have been lucky to see over the last 15 years but what Martin is trying to play is miles from that

Going to point the errors of this post in the right direction.
Fulton miss controls, his body shape is all wrong and the touch his too heavy and he sets the attacker up. Fulton attempts the toe poke tackle that would ultimately play the ball across to a fellow defender....this was not him playing a sideways pass but ultimately making a tackle due to his extremely poor touch.
THERE IS NO WAY AT ANY LEVEL SHOULD A PLAYER BEING MAKING SUCH A POOR TOUCH.
The pass by Grimes ultimetly should be played into Fultons left side, the side Fulton is moving towards and the ball then gets played easily to Darling who then looks to set sn attack down the left side.
GRIMES PLAYS THE WRONG PASS TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF FULTON, THE PASS SHOULD BE GOING TO FULTONS LEFT GIVING HIM SPACE.
Ultimately these are 2 terrible individual errors that these players should be understanding and will most certainly have been pointed out to them in the match analysis on Monday just gone.
I can't defend the 1st Oxford goal in the week but that first goal we conceded on the weekend just sets the standard, 2 individual mistakes that have nothing to do with the "style". These mistakes then get us to start chasing the game and that's never a good thing.
The 1st goal in midweek is undefendable and just needs to be played down the right by Wood, the guy is young and clearly learning but his mistake was ultimately the energy that was needed to get Oxford going.
Some big things going on the next few weeks so it seems.....Right wing back is moving on quick and a creative spark is now very much needed.
Anyone ask if Leeds want a striker 😬
If Grimes would get kidnapped for 20 years by aliens from outer space it would help us and his career no end.
How can you have such a poor player as captain? He NEVER takes responsibility on the pitch to warrant the captaincy either. Give me a three man midfield of Sllen, Congrieve and Dulton any day of the week.
Each time I go to Bedd - au........................

Notice how many of those were Grimes playing stupid blind passes? There's a theme here.
Yes, the theme is that if you use a system that hamstrings the defence and midfield's passing options and require a midfielder to drop deep and play a wall pass over and over again (so the defence can retain possession)...eventually the opposition steals one from you and you're fecked.

Or you get the player in question to stop doing it. It doesn't help that Grimes's one-footedness means you can guess where he's going to play it. And often his connection with the ball isn't clean.
If you check back a year, I called this out then. He'd already done it against Blackburn in RM's first game. I said it would cost us, and it has.
Playing out from the back doesn't have to include stupid passes by the goalkeeper or Grimes.

Martinez used to say he'd never work on a players weak foot, just try to improve the strengths. It's something I disagree with. I take my son over the field and I'm constantly on to him, we practise wall passes with me playing them to his left foot and telling him to use it. He's getting better.
I can'tunderstand how a player can get to be in Grimes position and so poor with his "weak" foot. Not just Grimes, any senior pro. There are local league players who are better with their weaker foot.

I did exactly the same as a teenager. Worked on my weaker (left) foot so much that I ended up playing left midfield or left wing. People used to think I was left-footed.

Clear still that, thanks.
That is the source of the issue and Fultons body shape is clear.......no question that Martin wouldn't have been happy here. Fulton should have been square on mind in this position, solid to the floor with options to him both right and left, poor technique but someone of Grimes experience should be reading the situation better.
As for having perfection to play this system... Rubbish. The champ is quite unforgiving but so if the technique and attitude is right then can be there for the taking.
As I said, Oxford first go can't be defended but these stills clearly show the issue and as a coach it would be very frustrating. The players need to take a bit more brunt here...both Grimes and Fulton.
From the frame above, turning back on yourself to the right to receive the pass will require a decent technique, strength and speed of thought.... Comparing Fulton with Downes here is the perfect example, chalk and cheese.
Thanks again poppy, perfect still from the source that it went wrong.... No lies in that still, anyone who has played the game will clearly not want to be in Fultons position knowing where the ball from Grimes ends up.
Grimes could play that across to Darling and over to Naughton but no he okays it to Fulton, clearly the Blackburn forward is on the front foot and where he plays it.... the Blackburn strikers eyes surely lights up.
40 secs on, clearly caught.

...and yet he is picked in week in week out by Russell Martin, because he is the best midfielder we have...and Martin has neither dropped him or sought to replace him in the transfer market.
Downes got caught out in Martin's system also, plenty. He now plays in the Premier League, for a top half club and is valued north of £10m.
...but you cling to that belief that it's not Martin and his system, it's the players. I'm sure Martin will get the high quality players in that he needs, they are two-a-penny after all

The fact that Grimes is captain, set-piece taker and undroppable has been a mystery to me and others on this forum for some time. It was very telling that no-one from the PL wanted to stump up the cash for Grimes and yet took Downes after one season.

I think you're completely wrong about Grimes and don't know your arse from your elbow, but let's say you are right and I am wrong about him...Do you hold Russell Martin accountable for making such a 'limited' player the lynch pin of his side?

Yes, and Cooper before him. Unfortunately, we're not blessed with CDMs. Such a shame we lost Downes. We'll see how RM incorporates Joe Allen into the lineup.

I did exactly the same as a teenager. Worked on my weaker (left) foot so much that I ended up playing left midfield or left wing. People used to think I was left-footed.
That was me too. In fact my left foot became the strongest but I would still play either full back or either side of midfield. team mates couldn't decide which was my stronger foot for a while and I ended up, at 30, playing in central midfield. I scored goals from outside the box with both feet.
Why can't pro players practise like that, why can't our midfielders be competent enough to be confident to use their "other" foot.
