Committees standards should be very interesting. Be fascinated to see what Lord Pannick QC’s brief asked him to advise on and how they can justify a £150,000 brief fee

He is exactly what we do not want to see in Government as he is perceived ,rightly or wrongly,to be on the 19th Century where young girls went into service whilst their parents worked 14 hours a day the the factory. A man who looks and sounds ridiculous to anyone not of his social circle. I would love to buy him a drink though and have a chat. |

That point was made recently, it may have been you making it, Doc? They’re not really after somebody who looks like them, rather somebody who says what they want to hear. What is it they’re after? Well, primarily a commitment to ‘the market,’ to market solutions. Which is why, ultimately, Truss was able to win out over the demonstrably more capable Sunak. The fact that Truss was a former Liberal probably counted in her favour as what used to be the Conservative Party (that died in 1979) is in thrall to the Liberal Idea of frictionless, international trade as panacea. If you are wondering what happened to the old Tory worldview, the sort of social compact championed by Macmillan, you’ll find it on the opposite benches. Expounded at Labour conference fringe meetings by Glasman’s ‘Blue Labour’ faction. This is a better read, putting forward a far more positive vision than anything you’ll come across in the broadsheets, Doc.

I’d imagine that would be the case amongst the Parliamentary party who are rather zealous members of the cult of the all seeing all knowing Market God. But the Conservative party members as a whole? I’m not convinced. I don’t have any details of the demographics on hand and I admit wholeheartedly I am in complete extemporising mode here, but channeling my inner Mystic Meg when I think of the average Conservative party member I would picture people sitting in cardigans on parish councils in some leafy rural village rather than some City boy counting his cash whilst cackling loudly. That’s the true heart of the Conservative party and if that is the case (it may very well not be) I can fully understand them connecting more with Truss, that silly lady who talks about local cheese and melton Mowbray pork pies.

| New PM on 17:26 - Sep 7 with 1270 views | Dr_Winston | I suspect a lot of people may be surprised at the demographics involved with grassroots Tory support. They'll probably find a considerably higher proportion of BAME members, particularly South Asian, than they'd expect. Migrant populations do tend to be quite Conservative. It's not hard to imagine a couple who have worked 100/120 hours a week between them in the family business to put three kids through University having some sympathy with what are perceived as (rightly or wrongly) core Conservative values like family, self reliance and wealth generation. It’s a quaint picture you paint there, I had a great-aunt who was a mainstay of the Cotswold Conservative Association many years ago and that’s pretty much her you’ve described to a tee, but I’m not at all sure that would be an entirely accurate depiction in 2022. No more accurate than the stereotype of Labour Party committees full of working men. I think both those ships have long since sailed. | |

Yes I would imagine the average labour committee these days would more closely resemble a scene from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. But again I’m just extemporising, I have no hard data.

If he was a Jack we could have bought him Lunch at that Cafe and you could have shredded him for me to gobble up what was left. Whole family can be classed as weirdos . I truly stand by that . To enforce a tweed jacket, striped shirt, corduroy trousers and brogues on a 12 yr old is child abuse of a kind. First question I would ask is why he has never has elocution lessons as he talks like Auberon Waugh, another muddled up,mixed up scion of an oddball arrogant father .

It's interesting then that he brought up the fact that the Conservatives have regularly received hefty donations from Russia then. And might i add that they continue to do so, seems strange considering Johnsons so called hard stance on the Ukraine situation.

Your last sentence almost suggests that you're finally beginning to understand. "Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty" Corbyn has been taking cash from Moscow for most of his political life. Not directly of course, he's not that stupid. But he's been well paid for appearances on Russia Today, and disruptive, anti-West organisations that he's received a lot of backing from in the past like CND, Stop The War and many Socialist Groups all received regular money from first Soviet and then Russian sources. Johnson is accused of it yet put the rest of Western Europe to shame in his immediate and strong support for Ukraine. You'd think that Vlad would ask for his money back.

Johnson puts the rest of Europe to shame, you can't be serious? Not so long back he was holidaying with Lebedev and granting him a seat in the HoL. So let me get this straight, paper trailed evidence of the Conservatives receiving Russian money isnt enough, but Corbyn receiving some "non direct" unprovable funding is enough?

Have to say that is a devastingly visceral demolition of Corbyn or it should be . Sadly, many decent folk taken onto by his “ support” and “ solidarity” for working people,a term guaranteed to highlight the steaming hypocrite uttering such contempt for “ordinary people” .These terms are damning by definition . Corbyn history of empathy with those who seek to endanger us is right out there .That so many are taken on shocks. I’ve read he is humble ,ordinary ,and supportive . Dear God. Right now ,us lot ,in the mainstream of everyday life are stuck with two parties who both underwhelm and really it s a case of us all doing the best we can for ourselves

Hmm, Bojo recieved money )allegedly) from rich Russians living outside Russia. Corbyn receved money from Russian government controlled organisations. Now I may well be thick as mince (well it's beyond maybe!) but no government that is funding useful idiots will do it so openly that even the useful idiot can see it. It is also probably true that Corbyn was wearing blinkers for all his "work" and was ignoring the possibliity that he was being a Russian stooge because he wanted to believe he was being a good socialist. Bojo was just being a greedy tool and being funded by Russian oligarch's who were mostly looking out for themselves, though I've no doubt they did Putin favours along the way. The fact that many of them cannot return to Russia for fear of getting that defenstration illness speaks for itself. If a paper trail proved that a serving PM was taking money or favours from a foreign government (and especially Russia) maybe there would have been an uprising in the commons and Bojo would have been ousted sooner?
