Odd really considering what Ive read.
Take out the welsh heartlands of Gwynedd and it seems we've been sold a pup.

What next

Proportion of Welsh speakers falls on 14:43 - Dec 7 by lifelong

What I find amusing about these threads is that in Wales there are 2 main languages English and Welsh with English being the most spoken, and some people are up in arms calling the Welsh language irrelevant with too much money spent on it.
Yet, in London only 36% of the population were born there with 48% born overseas. Over 300 languages are spoken there with many thousands unable to speak English, dozens of schools are non English speaking, go into some public service premises there and you will see announcements and information written in many languages.
This is referred to as multi cultural and cosmopolitan, perhaps the anti Welsh brigade on here should go up there and demonstrate against this?

Dare I say but anyone highlighting that in London would be classed as being racist

Your population % add up to 84% are the other 16% English people who moved there to work.

You also seem to have got your figures wrong official figures show 40.6% of Londoners were born overseas not the 48% you quote. These are 2021 census figures.

I would suggest it would depend how those facts and statistics were used.

In this case they were obtained from the 2021 census and other official websites to highlight how a huge city like London can prosper with a vast diversity of language and culture. Whereby some posters on here complain about the Welsh language which has been spoken in this country for centuries.

How much money is London spending on teaching/promoting languages other than English, excluding what comes out of the normal school budget.

I don't think anyone is saying wales can't prosper with a diversity of languages. What is being said is we are spending a lot of money on something that is clearly not working.

Correct 2021 census figure show 40.6% of people living in London were born overseas not the 48% figures originally claimed by the poster.

This is pretty much where I am on the subject.

It’s easy to measure taxes in doctors, nurses and police officers but that’s not all life is about. Culture and the arts need funding and by their very nature not everyone will agree on what’s worthy and what’s not.

I get that people are annoyed by the Senedd. I get people are unionists. Knock yourselves out?

But wanting the language to die? Seems a bit much.

her's the thing, Gwyn, I don't want Welsh to die out I simply believe we have more important things to spend money on right now.

I will say that about the arts too, Westminster gves a lot of money to the Opera house which I believe is wrong in the current situation. I don't know how much the senedd subsidises the arts by but as things are today we have more important needs.

The arts, just like Welsh will not die out because funding is diverted to hospitals or ambulances. Define Culture,

1
a
: the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group
also : the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time
popular culture
Southern culture
b
: the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization
a corporate culture focused on the bottom line
c
: the set of values, conventions, or social practices associated with a particular field, activity, or societal characteristic
studying the effect of computers on print culture
Changing the culture of materialism will take time …
Peggy O'Mara
d
: the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations

It does not die because we don't spend millions on it. In fact a lot of the arts and so called culture are patronised by the well off in society, in other words the majority of us pay for rich people to go to opera and ballet when they can easily afford the costs themselves.

I'll repeat it, Welsh will not die because it will exist in those houses that use it and pass it on naturally. It didn't die when English kings tried to snuff it out by force of arms so why would it die now if we spent the money on the NHS instead? What about school budgets, Gwyn? You know how short school budgets are, should we continue to send money in this way when the facts show it is not working?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

How long did they try to have bilingual matchday announcements at the stadium before they ditched the idea?

In this instance Cat, I see it as the same pot of money to reach the same ends - levelling up.

We make sure that throughout our primary school every child has the opportunity to visit a museum, go the the theatre, see a concert, go to a major sporting event, stay away from home and get involved in a community project.

All this stuff is subsided in some way which is a good job as they’d be beyond many families.

In regards to Welsh in particular, if it’s not working then they should look at why not instead of simply pulling the funding.

The reason seems to be that apart from the true Welsh speaking communities, hardly anybody else is interested in using the language everyday.

Kids come home from school and don't use it, it's not used in shops, it's not used online. It will be used in it's heartlands but fo most of us it's an irrelevance.

People talk about culture well culture changes, Wales is a very different place now to what it was 100, 500, 1000 years ago, the culture grew and changed. Why do people keep on harking back to the past, can't we move forward and see what it brings instead of trying to keep the past alive, it's on life support, let the natural course wend its way and see what happens?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Again, nobody (well, maybe Perchy) wants to see Welsh die out. And here's the thing; it's not going to. Not for centuries to come at the very least. Welsh speaking families will still raise Welsh speaking kids until long after we and our grandkids' grandkids will be cold in the ground.

There's just no need to subsidise the process.

Why not subsidize the Welsh Language its Welsh heritage we're talking about, there's way to many things that get millions thrown at it and inevitably wasted, how much did it cost, to carry out an enquiry/consultations on the M4 by pass around Newport tunnels only to see that idea binned, a blind bat has more vision than most of these "politicians"

Loads of dosh is spent in London teaching other languages.
Are we not allowed to do that in Wales.

I agree, killed investment into South Wales at least, the area is a total blackspot, I'm lucky in that I don't use that route that often, but feel for those that use it daily.

Well, I'm astonished by the number of actual Welsh people that want to see their nations language die out, I can't speak it as I never had the opportunity to when I was young a cop out by me perhaps, but I never ever want to see the language die.

And I couldn't give a monkeys chuff whoever disagrees either.

Btw …

The negative attention as a whole is based on a fall in the percentage of 3-15 year olds it is claimed speak Welsh,” Heini Gruffudd, the Chair of Dyfodol i’r Iaith, said.

“But those percentages are more of an interpretation by parents that a real test of whether children can speak Welsh.”
