| What do Swansea City have to do to please a small section of the clubs support ? on 18:53 - Jan 15 by SullutaCreturned | Top 8? Seems a tad ambitious to me. I count at least 10 clubs who are bigger or at least arguably bigger than us. Then how many clubs in our division have been in the EPL since us? I would say 8-15th is about a fair reflection of our size, taking into account all you said because other clubs still have parachute payments, other clubs get bigger crowds or have rich owners. Still, we are all entitled to our opinions. |
It has nothing to do with size though, size is subjective. Why should someone with a worse squad finish higher than us because they were more successful 30 years ago? Or have a bigger ground? Or whatever else metrics people use to determine size. What can be measured however is money spent, estimated squad value and salary budgets. All this points to us being top 8. If a squad has a £15m a year salary budget, a squad worth an estimated £50m and spent £10m in the last two seasons… would you expect them to finish higher than a side with a £10m a year salary budget, who’s squad is worth an estimated £30m and spent £1m on the last two seasons? “Size” doesn’t come into it.

| What do Swansea City have to do to please a small section of the clubs support ? on 11:30 - Jan 15 by Dr_Winston | It is almost unheard of for a team incapable of being solid defensively to achieve anything. We're still leaking too many goals. We're still leaking too many stupid, avoidable goals. Eighteen months in and Russy has shown precisely zero ability to address this problem. We were dull to watch under Cooper, but at least we could defend. |
Its amazing that our manager as an ex defender cannot seem to organise our defence

Many supporters can’t get to games for various reasons. Einstein never went to space but was the Premier voice in the area, and probably still is. If we stopped him having a voice until he went, we would be in a far worse place for it. |
It’s a different demographic. These message boards had a completely different vibe and more camaraderie when we were in the lower leagues, streaming didn’t exist and the vast majority on them were regular match goers. Would be interesting to do both and see if the opinions contrast.

Not sure why it would matter. Just like most clubs above league 1 in the modern age - the majority of supporters of clubs don’t attend the games for one reason or another. The away fans or even the home fans represent the minority view. Canvas all of the world and you would get many more multiples of 15,000 putting Swansea down as their team. We take 40,000 to Wembley with ease. These people have a voice just as important and valid as the minority of Swansea City fans that find themselves in a position to attend the games in person. However common sense tells us that floundering as a bottom half team for the majority of the last 18 months with this kind of squad is not something most are going to be particularly happy about.

I didn’t say don’t do a poll on here, I said do both. I would be interested if the results were similar or a higher proportion of match goers were happy.

| What do Swansea City have to do to please a small section of the clubs support ? on 10:55 - Jan 15 by SullutaCreturned | This is where I am. If Martin finally learns the lessons we have had to watch unfold, sometimes painfully, then he and we will improve. We haven't got the players to play the way he has been forcing us to. When he makes pragmatic choices we get results, mostly. Some people give Martin too much credit, some give him too much criticism. I'm firmly in the middle again having had enough earlier in the season when we were terrible and literally throwing points away as we gave goals away. To please the fans the performances have to be better, we have to see progress. With a back 4, with Joe in midfield, with Cooper on, with support for Piroe we are again seeing progress so I am happier. If we don't sign players and revert to the wing back, suicidal passing nonsense I will become unhappy again. It's all up to Martin. |
I can't say i am particularly impressed by the last 18 months. Yes we are trying to play the right way but it's to slow and we give away to many soft goals. I am not overly downbeat either certainly would not advocate the manager getting sacked. If we can come out of this transfer window in good shape I will be looking forward to a push at the play offs do I think we will make the top 6 unlikely if I am honest. 18 month report is a C for me but it,'s not all bad. If we spend half what we receive for Obafemi and Paterson (and Whittaker?), we should be able to bring in a right back who can defend and attack and cover up front (may not need that if Whittaker stays). If we can do that, we’ve got as good a chance as any of making the playoffs. If they stuff Martin in the transfer window and they have certainly got form over the last few years, then we’ll probably finish about where we are now. I’m not overly happy with the last 5 years if I’m honest.

I'm pretty much in agreement with yourself. Quite how Keith and others can be more positive under Martin than under, say, Cooper is quite bizarre but that's their choice. Every month , I feel we are moving further away from being an elite club....further away from the Premier League and returning to what we were for 7yrs. That's not the end of the world of course. But in reality you cannot stand still as a club. Martin isn't the primary reason for this; that's the owners. But I see virtually nothing in him which suggests to me that he'll ever be as successful a Manager as Copper, Potter, Martinez, Sousa, Laudrup or Brodge. He does not seem to learn and cannot gel a cohesive team out of what is still a reasonably talented squad. His analysis of what makes an effective football player is highly questionable...Whittaker, Fisher, Latubeaudiere are cases in point. Flynn Downes was a great signing and Wood (to an extent) and Darling have also done quite well. He's talking a talk but can't walk the walk. Look at his overall body of work and he's never even managed a top half finish. And that's worrying. This League is bang avaerage; we should be Top 8 with the squad we've had this season (and last). If he achieves that come May, fine. I don't dislike him and don't necessarily want him to go. I just want him to get more out of this squad because I'm 100% certain we'd be in the promotion mix right now if Cooper was currently on charge.

Listening to what Martin says " we are further away from bringing players in" I've no faith RM will get a penny to spend , of any transfer fee. Hope I'm wrong but if he's that pessimistic.....

Personally I can’t comment on Cooper on here, I was only running stuff here in the June before he left. But we did get the exclusive on him leaving three days after the play offs, and tbh a Wembley final like that and not one shot on goal was shocking. As for positivity yes, it’s difficult to be so, but around a quarter of our news features on the side and Martin are critical but they do need to be read. The draw at Bristol City is a point in case. That was damning. It’s strange certain people at the club view us and planet swans as provocative and unsupportive in general. Maybe they do read the news articles ?

I’m not surprised. Whatever people think of Martin (and a lot of the criticism is bang on IMO), we’re not going to get promoted with Latibaudiere first choice as an attacking full back. Despite what others will say, we wouldn’t have with pacy players who can attack but can’t defend (Oko, Garrick) either. I’m hoping it’s a case of get Obafemi out then bring players in, but wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t the case.

The points I mentioned do come into it because they are about money and we don't have much, our owners won't spend much and our current league position is...11th, smakc in thr middle of my estimation with no real signs of us doimg much better, unless our owners spend a bit. A bigger ground...bigger crowds mean more income. I dont think I mentioned being more succesful 30 years ago. Our current valuation though is 11th, https://www.transfermarkt.com/ Last season our average attendance had us ranked 11th too, https://www.worldfootball.net/ Where did Winter say we were re our budget? Wasn't it lower than your estimation? With that in mind, where do we come in the budget league table? The clubs with the most income can spend the most money, what is our income and where do we rank against other Championship clubs?

That's as much of an indictment of how poor this division is this year as anything, Keith. My opinion is the team that won the play off final under Rodgers would rip this team apart. Normally by this stage of the season a bit of a gap has opened up, there are clear challengers and also rans but there are only 16 points between 6th and bottom after 26/27 games. I think covid, the financial problems that have ensued outside the EPl, they have had a lasting effect.

“ It’s strange certain people at the club view us and planet swans as provocative and unsupportive”. Same can be said for me? I only asked a question of who is happy and I’m getting blamed for ruining friendships and undoing goodwill? Isn’t it the exact same poll that was ran on here like 3 weeks ago? I only wanted to get an update to see if it had changed since Sunderland. I must say the reaction has been ridiculous.

Always happy to move past things, just don’t like my character being called into question that’s all. Seems to be happening a lot recently; Especially when someone has just been exposed for lying about putting my on ignore, the only reason someone would do that is so they can continue to bait and cause issues. It’s proof in itself around peoples intentions. But yes, onwards.
