Piroe destined to leave Swansea City 8th Jul 2023 07:00
It’s a bit like buying a house this player transfer window. Ellis Simms moves to Coventry and that collapses Joel Piroe’s potential swap move to Merseyside, and that is a good example. However, despite that being the case it seems Everton are still comfortable with the money it will cost to sign the Dutchman. 1

Possibly because we are playing the long game with Piroe and he stays until we get the right fee. We have four league matches before the Window closes and he could be here for all four. We need him match sharp.

There's two sides to every story and both are right in their own way though

It's not an exclusive one before another.

I would imagine the club has a list of targets depending upon the circumstances. We desperately needed pace and width so the Joshuas were always going to sign anyway.

If Piroe is not sold then we could afford a certain type of player to replace him. If he is then obviously the budget changes and the prospective target along with it. Same for Ntcham.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

IMO if nobody is sold there is very little we need to bring in.

We lost £13 million in the last accounts, sell before we buy is sensible, in my opinion

It would be nice to think that could happen but don’t hold your breath. We went the whole of last season without a recognised right back because the ownership felt that Cyrus Christie was too old. We still haven’t replaced Obafemi. I get the feeling that we are going to be pick-pocketed for Piroe late in the transfer window & be left without a recognised striker unless of course anyone thinks that Liam Cullen is the answer

Christie was probably too old for the type of contract he demanded, and we looked like we needed an upgrade at right back even when he was here (despite a good first month). The pining over Wolf and Christie last season was very strange given how below-par and incredibly expensive they were. At least Wolf had the excuse of never having played wingback before, and looked far better the couple of times he got to play more advanced.

Wingbacks when playing 3 at the back in the last two seasons were expected to stop wingers and high press the full backs having to sprint regularly to do so impossible to do if not team not set out properly.

I suspect that duff and watson are all over this, they will have targets preped if piroe goes.

For me I hope he goes as I don't think he fits into duffs gameplan, he would like an out and out no 9 and atm we do not have one.

Any decent right back or wing back would have been an upgrade on what we tried last season, unless anyone thinks that Latibeaudiere or Darling were actually decent options. The lack of options cost us a possible play off place. Just about all our attacking threat had to go down the left as we had no options on the right.

Agree about Wolf, RM was possibly the only person unable to see that Wolf lacked the pace to be a wing back, though he did look ok when playing in the advanced midfielder role

If we are going to play a more physical high press game then you're absolutely right. There's no way that will suit Piroe as a centre forward.

I will maintain that he played his best football for us as a #10 and he could do a job there for us in basically any system IMO, but if sacrificing him means we can afford 3/4 more players better suited for Duff's system then it just makes sense to do it.

I was thinking on the lines that duff likes wide players who cross the ball alot therefore we need a proper no 9 who head the ball and piroe as we both know cannot as hes a natural no 10, its a bloody shame as he has been brilliant for us but needs must.

I would not be surprised to see Josh Thomas being given a run. Last season was his break out season with a lot of u21 goals. He is an aggressive presser and gets into situations. His finishing improved markedly last season after seeming a little careless the season before.

He sadly has very little senior experience so a loan is more likely as it is a big jump. Ollie McBurney had two or three loans before becoming a regular.

Duff will be assessing him this pre season.

I (personally) think the fact Piroe has 12 months on his contract has no bearing on his valuation.

Clubs are short sighted.... They want players in now for this season. They're not thinking about the 2024/2025 season.

If there's a good chance they can get their man now at an agreed valuation they will, and won't want to risk going against bigger and more attractive clubs in 12 months time when he's available on a free.

If someone wants Joel for 2023/2024 then they need to stump up exactly what the swans want for him.

We were not prepared to pay the £1M for Ogbene, IMO it was all about the valuation.

He was injured for 18 months after a car crash and missed the season he was "careless" with his finishing... Maybe you're thinking of someone else.

It has every bearing on his value, clubs know this and will offer less as they know if we don't sell, we lose him for nothing next summer.

A longer contract would have us in the driving seat

Rose tinted glasses, Cyrus was okay for us, never really a difference maker.
The wages he wanted were pretty ludicrous by all accounts as he was on a big whack at Fulham.
Has gone on to start 20 games last season at Hull, seems a shrewd decision to skip on him in my opinion.

Any stick to beat the owners with though i suppose.

Wood played on the right side of defense and although raw and inexperienced in the Championship looked a better option than Christie even Darling looked better there although by that time we started to play four at the back.
Not enough pace in the back three when Christie was playing wing back meaning back three had to drop deep or get punished leaving too much work for the wingbacks to do, Fulton similarly played RWB and was seen to be treading water after 70 minutes.
Be interesting to see how Duff sets out his team if he intends to play a back three, hope he is experienced enough to adapt as required.
It seemed a big problem with Championship teams last season good in one half, poor in the other, managers slow to or unable to adapt to counter opposition's changes in formation, Martin seemed to get it right at the end of last season but too late or were other factors involved like other mangers giving youngsters a chance with nothing to lose.
