Rishi Sunak is considering removing the winter fuel allowance ... 17:39 - Sep 29 with 7470 viewstheloneranger

"Rishi Sunak is considering removing the winter fuel allowance from all but the poorest pensioners as a way of clawing back some taxpayer funds from the elderly, as he prepares to fight the next election on a pledge to keep the pension triple lock despite its spiralling costs."

Rishi Sunak is considering removing the winter fuel allowance ... on 12:48 - Sep 30 by Gwyn737

I’m pretty ambivalent about it to be honest mate, possible because I don’t know of anyone who will be affected.

I do see a bit of unfairness though in that the person who bought their house in say Swansea in 1980, is massively disadvantaged to the person who bought theirs in Tunbridge Wells at the same time.

They both would have worked equally hard yet one will have generated a fortune more by doing nothing more.

The same can be said of inheriting a house, you could inherit it and it's worth 600k but sell u 20 years later and it's 2 miilion.

Or how about sayingthe same about someone buying ahouse in Townhill versus one in Mumbles?

We pay tax on our earnings, tax on our savings, tax on essential services, tax on food and drink.

What is next, charging us 20% tax on how much tax we pay?

It should be means tested, what's the point in giving it to people who clearly don't need it

Really simple to take it from higher rate tax paying pnsioners.

You could say exactly the same about that.

It’s still exceptionally rare and in most cases down to blind luck. Why should that person in Townhill not benefit but the person in mumbles gets the over a million pound estate AND a tax break.

It’s not earned money in most cases.

If we’re really about levelling up then this is a good policy (as long as the mega millionaires don’t avoid it)

I’m surprised at how many people this doesn’t affect are keen for the top 3% to have a tax break.

As I said earlier, I don’t think I know anyone who’ll be effected.

Makes you wonder why people paying 40% income tax need a winter fuel allowance.

Makes me wonder why you’ve justified it as a policy until the exact moment Rishi Sunak said it was a bad idea. What flavour is his shoe polish today?

OK I'll stand up to be counted. Inheritance tax is totally unfair in this day and age. Why should my next generation pay tax on what I have worked bloody hard to generate. Considering I have already paid tax on everything I have earned.

Standing up to be counted by denouncing a tax only the richest 4% of estates in the whole country will ever have to pay. How very noble lol.

Let’s all shed a tear for the heiresses of the wealthiest 4%. Pity these poor children and grand children who have to pay a smidge more tax on their stonking inheritance.

Nobody who is above a certain income or wealth level should get any benefits.

These rich people get bus passes, chuld benefit, this winter allowance, are there others?

Nobody who's income is in the millions or has millions in inheritance should qualify for benefits of any kind.

And nobody should get unfettered support from the state if they refuse to take confesoonsibility for their lives .

Greatest scandal which Tories should see to is people ( and not rich ones) having to see their homes to get into a “care “ home to dine on sandwiches and chicken nuggets . This eclipses any benefits which are paid to people who basically paid for them and others anyway .

Rich pay tax and this provides for the “ poor” , the ones who feast at McDonalds and dump their crap at a hedgerow near you .

Confessoonsibility?

How many people have had to sell their homes?

I woud say rich people getting money they don't need is just as bad, Welfare is supposed to be for those in need, not those with 7 figure bank accounts.

Fun fact, there are people in receipt of tax credits, essentially a benefit paid to those on a low income, with more than a million quid in savings, all quite legally as capital is not taken into account.

Not quite sure how as I'd expect the interest on a figure that big to exceed the income limits, but apparently it can and does happen.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

My wife’s mother.
She had to sell her house to move 8 to a care home .
It costs £1300 per week.
This woman has never claimed benefits of any kind as was the case with her husband who was a railway worker .
They brought up four daughters none of whom were troubled neglected, disadvantaged or underprivileged .
They ate well,as dad had an allotment and consequently ate no crap .

Now, as wife has power of attorney ,we are down to the stage where her money has almost ran out .

Forgive me if I don’t pine for the feckless who rely on everyone else .

I agree with you about people getting unfettered support, people who can’t work deserve support people who can work but don’t want to work should be made to wait to for the dole - simple as. If they don’t want to then they get nothing. If they have families then food etc is provided either via social services, school meals, school uniforms etc are provided, but as for money for phones, sky, fags etc it isn’t happening.

You mention the rich paying, if you’re loaded then the chances are they have accountants managing everything and tax contributions are significantly reduced. I read the other day in one of the quality news papers that inheritance tax was unlikely to impact on most people with around £19m as all the assets etc were tied up in trusts and they had advisors making sure they’re exposure was minimal - the people getting caught up in it all were those generally in the middle and upper middle class who were inheriting property.

What we need is a fair system where everyone pays a fare share.

My father ran his own business, never sick and never claimed benefits, he said that benefits were designed as a safety net for those who could not fend for themselves.
His care cost £650,000 at the end of his life, 10 yeas in a home after a stroke, he paid it all himself. There was £100,000 left, after he passed, which we gave to his grandchildren to help them buy a house.

I could write a book about.
Wifeys mum is 96 and hanging on though she wants to die rather than live.
The care she gets is invisible
We spend a lot of time answering calls from them and taking her to hospital she doesn’t really appreciate .
ThecfMily house is 300 yards away .

Her married life spent there until her husband died and she couldn’t care for herself .

Don’t let anyone tell me anything is worse than the way we treat our ekdely folk but on this threat some beauts are more concerned with tidy bashing.
Both parties are responsible for this ,as are we ,for allowing it.

Old people don’t complain so they have no political mileage . Then they die . Young people treat them like garbage .

As is obvious

A lot of these youngsters, don't take in account of what these Older folk have contributed throughout their working life's most have done 40/50+ years of working and deserve to receive what they receive in my honest opinion, most were brought up learning the value of life and the value of money, a great majority of todays younger folk know the value of nothing, for lots of reason's far to many haven't got a good days work in them, but expect everything.

Many youngsters simply see anyone over 60 as not worthy to be alive.
Ageism is acceptable in away racism isn’t
Many worked 50 years earning a pittance yet they managed to get a house of their own, which is taken off them by the state by virtue of these “ care” homes

Yet, we allow it and bleed about who pays higher rate tax or who has benefits when “they” think they don’t merit.
