It's a matter of time before a child dies after being swept / blown out to sea on a SUP. The bloody things are everywhere. Not a lifejacket between them.
It’s unforgivable Basic parenting I’m / was a strong swimmer but on Algarve beach I was caught in a very strong rip current Fortunately ,my trining saw me avoid panicking ( just) and I got out ,eventually. Cold = panic The sea is a killer Every child should be able to swim too, no excuses . Many can’t

Totally agree. Kids should be taught to swim and swim well. i'm sure many drownings occur because of poor swimming abilities and lack of awareness. Yes, the water is still cold at this time of year, but many go cold water swimming in temperatures much lower than this and learn not to panic. Rip currents are a different matter. the public should be taught how to spot them.
I'm not convinced with the latest advice of float to survive. Try that in surf or when you know you are in danger. Many ppl, myself included, simply can't float, we have sinking legs. Better to tread water imo, especially in sea water where it's more buoyant than fresg water.

If you can't swim, you certainly won't have the composure to float on your back.
Good advice about not jumping into open water. That technique does work

Should bring back public information films for kids - embed them into YT, TikTok etc force the platforms to do so but we have a series of Gvmts that simply don't care about public safety and only pay lip service to it
I was a strong swimmer as a kid as was my Mam. I grew up around water inland and coastal but was always taught respect for it as it can be fatal and doesn't discriminate.
There are some very strong rips on the south Gower beaches and at Broughton. As I said my Mam was a good swimmer but she was nearly taken by one in the late 70s thankfully my Dad saved her.
What to do in a riptide and teaching people not to panic and floating techniques should all be part of the school curriculum together with basic life saving skills the STA run courses/awards but I'm unsure as to whether swimming is optional in schools these days? I'll have to ask my kids later on when they're back home.

Well, it’s mental issue that can be inculcated into non swimmers . It’s about not panicking I accept that but somehow it can be taught I have a dear non swimming friend and we’ve talked about this If it were to occur then hopefully training kicks in. I do accept your point however

Unfortunately, if a non swimmer finds themselves in deep water away from any solid object, they will 100% drown

Sadly our cold water reflex can be enough. It's often fit young men, good swimmers who succumb diving into freshwater lakes.
The amount of drownings is tragic, in any case I’m unsure if parents were there, kids still seek the freedom we all did as youngsters it’s just that it seems their basic skills are missing. Not being able to swim but the whole awareness thing.
Swimming was big years ago, we all did it, and I would bet my bottom dollar that less kids can swim today as they did say forty years ago. You can’t go from talking in a daft accent and being engaged on your phone half the day straight into nature.

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.
It always pays to do your research and check out the lie of the land as they say. I remember years ago doing handstands and plunging into the med off a diving board in the sea off Rhodes . I did this a few times and swam back to the shore. I got chatting to the Greek beach deckchair official who spoke very good English who was sitting and looking out to sea. During the course of our conversation she mentioned that a few years previously a German tourist had dived off the same board and had hit the water and his body had become wedged between 2 rocks under the surface. No one realised what had happened no one had watched it and it wasn't until a long time later that his body was discovered. It sent a bit of a cold shiver down my spine . The moral of the story is do your research beforehand speak to the locals understand the risks and remember many nations including Greece don't have the same standards of safety as the UK. This applies to things like riding motorbikes/quadbikes abroad as well and also simpler activities like hill walking . The lad from the UK who sadly died last summer in Tenerife being a prime example .

It doesn't even have to be cold. A non swimmer will very often drown silently.

Local Council cuts have meant my local swimming pool has been demolished and ready for housing and flats yet again .
Both my children learnt to swim there and the basic skills they might have from them early learning days might have helped them instead of these tragic incidents we are seeing .
Go to any Gower beach and sea resort and dive in head first and the reaction is how cold the water is , not swimming pool temperature out there .
Loss of life for these younsters is sad and will never bring back their lives cut short .
Last time I was down in Port Eynon there were Life guards watching over the seas for potential accidents , wonder if they are still there maybe .
Basic life saving skills for younsters as mentioned earlier , do not play by pylons or railway tracks was an lesson I did take in .

I've seen it that more people in the UK drown in inland water (rivers, lakes, reservoirs etc) than in the sea, I've also seen it that inland water can be colder than the sea. Most of the stories ive seen of people drowning in this heatwave have died in inland water not the sea.
I've noticed in the past at what they now call the waterfall country these days up past Pontneddfechan out of towners seeing local kids in the river/jumping into pools and then doing it themselves, I used to think are those visitors and their parents aware of the dangers, fast flowing water, cold water temperature, rocks etc.
I haven't been up there for years now, because of Airbnbs, heard an hotel is being built, there are probably even more visitors up there now than decades ago, I hope these days that the authorities have the sense to put up warning signs ?
Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

Beach lifeguards are mostly employed by the RNLI these days.

Similar happened to me in Cala de Majorca years ago, the sea was rough that day and I love swimming in a decent surf, but there was a hell of a strong undertow, there were a few other families with us and the youngsters were enjoying, I swam out a bit then had a tough swim to get back into the shallows where it was pretty bad there, a few of got the lads out of the water, as it was getting very naughty.
My mate then went to get some fags and he saw lifeguards drag an older man out and were working on him, other were putting sunbeds on their sides to form a block around where they fighting to save the man's life, other lifeguards were struggling to get people out the water as you expect, by this time the police were there and were enforcing the ban, I think they even arrested one bloke the led him away anyway.
Unfortunately the chap they dragged out passed away.
We went back there a few days later in the holiday and it was lovely the sea had calmed right down, not been back to Cala de Majorca since though, that beach is lethal in certain conditions.

One second I was with them larking around, the next I was a giddy 25+ metres out to sea. I called out to them and tried to swim back in but I was getting nowhere. Then, I was engulfed in water and thought this is it but when I surfaced I was back with them near the shore. Clearly, a riptide had swept me out and I was very lucky a wave brought me back in. Otherwise I wouldn’t be telling you about it now! It’s a huge reminder as to the power of the sea and the dangers it presents.
