Anna Turley claimed today on the radio that net migration had fallen by 82%. As you say some of this is due to policies introduced in the final year or two of the last government when they realised things were getting out of control, but the net figure gives an overly positive picture because of the number of people leaving the UK. The latest government figures for the YE May 2026 show that there were 778,626 entering with visas and 43.806 entering illegally without a visa. Piled on top of arrivals from previous years who have yet to integrate that means that the problem remains highly visible. I will think there is something in your argument if all the additional changes proposed by Shabana Mahmood are actually put into legislation. Already we can see the PLP backbenchers trying to water those proposals down. [Post edited 10 Jun 15:11]
