Re the game, I am still worried about where our goals will come from.
Having slept on this I can’t believe how disappointed I am that we lost yesterday. Normally, I’d shrug a cup game iff and seek solace in the fact that we can concentrate on the league.
But I keep replaying a few things from yesterday which chimes with your point. Idah was through on goal in the first half and although it was a tight-ish angle, his shot was tame. He should have put his laces through it. And then Just’s shit where he had plenty of time and tried to be cute by bending it. There were a few others.
I’ve just seen some of the other Championship sides goals and although I’m sure there were similar incidents in those games it being the first competitive match of the season, they managed to finish better than we did.
I’d like us to be getting the ball at speed into the area with a target man or two arriving at the right time. Yesterday, it seemed too much of trying to thread needles and being snuffed out too easy.
We’ve got genuine pace now, let’s get them and the strikers in the same page.

Morning I will get this in quick Let’s forget this “ it’s only the carabea cup” crap It was the first “ “ meaningful game No excuses that it was a pre season etc and is no guide It was a guide , we still played it slow, still faffed about, still missed ll gifted n appalling goal to a big team that hadn’t had a shot at goal . They didn’t get any after either . That’s because they were well drilled , referee smart and basically head workers .We were bullied again . Vig still kicks to touch ,our full backs look abysmal apart from Lissah who looks real class . We showed little urgency ,again The crowd silence said it all. We are still seeing substandard performances defended by some as being ( negative)
Negativity it’s not but fact and the truth .
I would warn against watching the likes of West Ham and wolves as to how they deal with defensive errors.

The shooting opportunity that Stamenic had in the second half a perfect example of your point, got the ball on the edge of the box,a big gap in front of him an he chipped it to the back post and out for a goal kick instead of putting his foot through it It’s simple really , don’t shoot and you won’t score It’s pointless trying to walk it into the net

It’s only the first game. Just , Yeo and Opoku will very soon be hitting the back of the net. Our problem yesterday was we could play the ball out and through Birmingham in the first half but the pressed us well in the second half which squeezed us into making mistakes and long balls from Vig which always coughed up possession. A comfortable CD and a bonafide CDM in the Bodde mould would certainly ease that pressure. I thought our passing and general forward play was a joy to watch in the first half. They weren’t even in the game until the mistake and subsequent goal.

First half was a breath of fresh air Second half we reverted to the sideways and back in our own half rubbish we’ve seen over the last few years, slow boring and easy to play against ,having Stamenic and Fulton in the midfield together compounded our problems and made us easy to play against The few times we did get forward second half came when Eom ran with the ball through the middle and laid the ball out wide We could all see what was happening so Matos must have

Of course you can be cautiously optimistic.
It’s a common phrase.
Quote.
Yes, cautiously optimistic is a very real and widely used phrase. It means you hope for a good result and see reasons to feel positive, but you also know that problems or setbacks could still happen.

Yep.
What you can’t be is a realist AND a doom monger.

Lots of what if and buts, will Matos revert to the players with championship experience for the first league game, looks as if Burgess will be out so new pairing will be needed in the heart of the defence, good thing or bad thing? should Lissah or Welsh start iwho is the most comfortable on the left. Matos tried the same thing on Saturday as he did against Legane when bringing Fulton on pushing Stamenic onto the right side of the midfield did that benefit Just being pushed out wide? Are we comfortable with Widell needing to come so deep in both games, as per lthe start of last season Matos will have to work out the best fits for the team just as Sheehan had to but struggled for any form of positive consistency.
We have to wait an see who will be relied on to get us off to a good start away from home.

Last thing we want to be doing is forces square pegs into round holes and vice versa, we did it with Galbraith when it was clear that we were more effective with him in midfield No10 role.

And don’t forget Key was less than impressive against Sorba last season Lissah at right back for me and Welsh in the middle We have to be tight to their widemen and in midfield We need to be aggressive or they will roll us over

Is it clear that Stamenic is the best option in the central midfield? As for a No 10 role we haven't played with two up top wjich is the formation most associated with it, for a number of seasons . We have lost Franco for the moment and Galbraith is gone who is going to grab the midfield positions Just seem full of vigour at the moment and Widell has stake a claim but as yet we are missing something there to be found, Lissah looks really assured on the ball with him driving forward from defends cam we then afford to have Stamenic in the centre of the midfield to cover those runs or just play Lissah there instead and would Lissah be happy there or would it be too much for the young player with little experience around him to help? Happy days new season has started with a disappointing result but surely Matos will turn things around.

We desperately need a proper CDM and not shoehorn Stamenic who is really an 8. His presence further forward would help nip some opposition moves in the budget if he and the team press correctly .
Plus - a proven right back so Lissah/Cabango/Welsh could rotate now Burgess is injured.
