I don't think Nazi slaves count because they were mostly white from occupied Europe! At their peak the Nazi's had approx 15 million 'forced' workers.
From what I can find, at it's peak England had around 10,000 black slaves (actually living in England) and interestingly the Church of England was implicated in slave ownership, that's it, we need to abolish the CofE too!
Most of what I've read suggests the Potuguese were worse than England. They legalised slavery in Portugal for example whereas it was never actually legailsed in England. They were in the slave trade before and after England/UK and it was our nvy that was sent to stop them, amongst others.
So we were late into the trade, one of the first out of it and actively tried to stop it but we are worse than Nazi Germany?

Of course Britain was heavily involved in the black slave trade, but before that people from Britain were taken as slaves by the Romans, then the Vikings. Then we had serfdom under the Normans where the peasants were the property of the local barons. Workhouses and prison labour were slavery by the back door (Good film to add to the pornography thread). Women have been the property of their husbands until relatively recently. This notion of freedom is an incredibly new concept in the grand scheme of things. | |
