Drakeford and vaccines 19:27 - Feb 6 with 9838 viewsexhmrc1

For all you Drakeford, Gething and WG slaters on here Wales has currently vaccinated more than any other UK nation.

Wales has overtaken England to lead the UK on the rate of the population getting a first dose of Covid vaccine.

More than 550,000 people in the top priority groups have been given their first doses of Covid vaccines in Wales.

It means 17.7% of the Welsh population has been vaccinated, compared to 17.5 % of the population in England, 14.4% in Scotland and 15.3% in Northern Ireland.

This has been done at the same time as having nearly half the current infection rate as England and without dragging over 80s miles for vaccinations.

Well done to all concerned.

They've done their jobs. Finally. Congratulations.

Shame about those who sickened and died during the weeks that we had 200,000 vaccinations sitting on the shelf unused for transparently bullshit reasons, but whoop-di-f*ckin-do, Drakers and Gething have eventually pulled their fingers out.

Now let's hope they relax restrictions as soon as possible instead of leaving them in place for no reason other than because they can.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

They didnt die. Just like you failed to see how the vaccination rate was going to quicken up you fail to understand that where the infection rate is lower you end up eventually some weeks later with less deaths. There has been more deaths pro rata in England than in Wales during this period.

Super Drakers to the rescue again.

They'll still find something to bump their gums about though.

My 90+ yr old grandparents are having their vaccines in their own home next week, fantastic stuff.

The roll out of the vaccine has been and is superb.

The icing on the cake would be trying to find the source and extent of the South African variant circulating in the community, and trying to snuff it out, instead of doing absolutely nothing.

That could undermine the entire vaccine exercise.

Great news about your grandparents.

Maybe the reason for the massive increase in vaccinations in Wales, is because some people did bump their gums.

The South African variant wouldnt have come here if Johnson had acted properly and closed down borders something you have supported on months on the guise we are 22 miles from France. Well we arent 22 miles from South Africa or Brazil and people have brought it in from those places.

No the reason was the Astra Zeneca vaccine arrived albeit later than hoped for. The plan always was to vaccinate care homes and over 80s with the AZ vaccine either in their local surgery or at home. Home vaccinations take far longer due to the amount of travelling between patients.

It doesn't matter that we aren't 22 miles from South Africa or Brazil. It didn't necessarily come here directly.

We can't close our borders, we are too dependent on foreign labour and students. Not to mention n the NHS. Whoever brought it here wasn't on holiday.

We only know about these variants because of the work we do here to sequence the virus.

Anyway, it's a moot point. It's here and WG are doing nothing about it whereas Westminster are actually trying to find it and eliminate it in England.

They've got the vaccines right, but that's it. A broken clock is correct twice a day.

Oh! apologies, I was fairly sure Mr Drakeford said that he was holding some supplies back, so we wouldn't run out of vaccines, and also stated that, rolling out the vaccine wasn't a sprint or a race (or words to that effect).

Anyway, whatever has gone on in the past, they seem to have recovered excellently.

Although I have heard that there will be a slow down of vaccinations in the next two weeks, and I'm not suggesting it's anything to do with Drakeford, at this stage.

We're supposed to be grateful and appreciative that the Welsh Govt is finally doing the bare f*cking minimum after dragging their heels for weeks.

There probably will be a slow down of vaccine unless the amount received is increased. We have currently used the equivalent of all the vaccinations received up to last week and 60000 of those received from last week. Of all the vaccines received we only have a small amount left so unless there is an increase all will be used probably by this time next week. Also we only have so many left to vaccinate and many of those will be housebound which takes a considerable time to do. Some of the people due to have it might not want it also reducing numbers.

It will quicken up again when more vaccines are received and we move on to the following groups.

Maybe more shipments of vaccine should be held back if it's going to stop people dying.

We could have closed our borders and made it very difficult for those not having good reason to enter the UK. We could also have introduced compulsory essential quarantine at hotels etc for those entering the U.K, students are all on one and foreign labour is not so key me that we are in lockdown.

We don5 know what exactly either government are doing, but I hope they are tracing people and telling them in no uncertain terms they need to self isolate. Those who don’t should be sent to jail.

I genuinely don't think we can close our borders in any way that could completely isolate us in the way that Australia and New Zealand have. Just look at the situation in Kent before Christmas when France closed the border.

We could have done more, and probably should be doing more now, but bare in mind until very recently we didn't know about the new variants. We only know about them now because we look for them more in the UK than anywhere else. It's the new variants that are the problem not the original virus now we have vaccines.

We know that they are actively looking for people with the South African variant in England. We aren't here and Vaughan Gething said we won't be. I think that's a massive mistake.

We could significantly close them, not like the "closed" air bridges that exist at the moment. Absolutely pathetic, coming up to a year of this virus and people are still flooding in and going on their merry way. Some of those in Westminster should be up on criminal charges.

As should some of those in Cardiff Bay.

It's not a Westminster v Cardiff thing. Everything Westminster has done Drakeford could have done differently, what he has done differently he's often got wrong.

Significantly closing borders isn't enough in a country as dependent on outside countries as the UK. All it would take is an asymptomatic lorry driver stopping in services to introduce a new variant.

Genuinely, the only thing Drakeford has got right is the vaccine rollout and thats after getting a pasting for his "vaccinators standing around with nothing to do" comments.

You lot make it a Westminster v Cardiff thing.

Significantly closing the borders is exactly what should have happened last March. So you want to use a single asymptomatic lorry driver as a reason not to close them. Tidy that. Risk control, reduce the risk to as low as is reasonably practicable.

People are flooding in to this country, not being tested, not having to self isolate, then able to travel anywhere within the country uncontrolled. And you want to have a go at Drakers for not trying to find a needle in a haystack? Behave.

Even the Home Secretary has admitted she was over ruled as she wanted borders closed. The reality is it is allowing people to come and go into the country that has caused most of our problem. Last August/ Sept when this was kicking off again you backed keeping borders open and Air Bridges. That is where it escalated from. People going abroad coming back with the virus and passing in onto others in pubs and houses. It has risen since as the figures show. You keep blaming Drakeford and Co. How many flights arrive into Wales from Brazil or South Africa. How many people travel back from holidays into Cardiff as against Bristol, Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or other airports. The only group with control over airports, ports and the Chanel Tunnel is the UK government. It has failed hugely and not just for Wales. The virus has been brought here on 3 separate occasions whilst Johnson and Co have sat back and watched. Originally, last summer and again now. Even now it isnt acting soon enough. There will be more coming with the new strains by next Monday.

For those of you still under the illusion that Wales has half the infection rate of England

Today's testing figures

England 16,302 positive cases from 741,625 tests. Infection rate 2.19%
Wales 675 positive cases from 19,318 tests. Infection rate 3.49%

Simple really if you do so little testing you infection rate per head of the population will miraculously seem a lot lower.

Wales is only doing half the amount of testing per 100,000 of the population as England.

How many more asymptomatic people would Wales find if it tested properly.

England has increased daily testing from 350,000 a day before Christmas to 750,000 day.

Wales was testing 20,000 a day before Christmas but has reduced it to an average of 10,000 a day. Hopefully the 19,000 it tested yesterday will continue.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

I'm not part of a "lot" I'm just pointing out that everything Westminster has done Wales could have done differently. We've done well in just one aspect and a thread is started lauding the Welsh Government. I'm not prepared to accept it.

Shutting our border in March would have been too late, thousands of UK residents had already brought it back to the UK.

It wouldn't be a single lorry driver when there are thousands bringing our food every day, one person is all it would take though.

Nobody is flooding in to the country, they need to test negative and isolate. If Drakeford didn't think this was sufficient then he could go further as Sturgeon has done

You aren't going to find a needle in a haystack if you don't look, and as reports suggest that the Oxford vaccine does not work to prevent symptoms, at all, against the South African variant then we should be trying. This on its own could set us back a couple of months.
