Drakeford and vaccines 19:27 - Feb 6 with 10951 viewsexhmrc1

For all you Drakeford, Gething and WG slaters on here Wales has currently vaccinated more than any other UK nation.

Wales has overtaken England to lead the UK on the rate of the population getting a first dose of Covid vaccine.

More than 550,000 people in the top priority groups have been given their first doses of Covid vaccines in Wales.

It means 17.7% of the Welsh population has been vaccinated, compared to 17.5 % of the population in England, 14.4% in Scotland and 15.3% in Northern Ireland.

This has been done at the same time as having nearly half the current infection rate as England and without dragging over 80s miles for vaccinations.

Well done to all concerned.

Right or wrong, Drakeford cares.

Wrong or wrong, Johnson does not give a toss.

100,000 dead mind

A couple of qualifiers to the good news . Drakeford announced that 56,000 people in the top four groups have YET to be offered appointments but HE HOPES to offer them appointments by 15th February.

Vaccination rates per age Groups in Wales

Over 80s 87%
Over 75s 84%
Over 70s 73%

Still quite a way to get vaccination rates to at least 90%

Wales still has the highest death rate of the four UK nations.

Wales 211
England 185
Scotland 152
NI 129

Not sure where you got those figures from, but Wales is well below the average for new cases and deaths

You’ve given up posting vaccination rates now that Wales are top of the pile. By the way, total people with a positive Covid test per 100,000 people in the last 7 days:

England 194.6
NI 160.7
Scotland 116.7
Wales 114.3

That stat is pretty meaningless as is does not take into account the amount of testing carried out by each nation.
England carrys out 500,000 test a day. Wales does about 10,000.

If you increase the number of tests you find more cases pretty simple really.

I was Pfizered at 3.30 this afternoon. Brilliantly organised.

I'm not a fan of Labour (nor a Labour voter) but they've done brilliantly with this vaccine rollout.

Nice to hear that. Some of the rubbish posted on here has clearly been totally biased and we are now beginning to see the truth. The rollout has been great and some of the handling of the virus has been as well as showing the current rate is nearly half that of England. WG made mistakes early on but since around June time it has been far better handled than in England. Scotia has posted numerous times about the differences in rates. At one time there was a thousand points in England's advantage due to the problems in Nursing Homes. Today the gap has dropped to 43 and is continually dropping and in a week or so time it is likely it will exceed te Welsh rate. From 1000 to 48 shows home much better the Welsh handling has been over the last 7 months.

it doesn't add up. the amount of new cases in wales given the population is less than the national average.

Wales 608 x 22 = 13,376 , the Uk today is 15,000

That wasnt the case. Here is a comment from Swansea Bay Health Board on 8 December explaining what was going to happen

The first COVID-19 vaccinations have been given by Swansea Bay University Health Board.

The programme got underway at Morriston Hospital on Tuesday morning following the delivery of the first batch of 975 Pfizer/BioNTech vaccinations.

As the vaccine needs to be stored at a very low temperature and cannot be transported easily, frontline staff in the hospital will receive it first.

For about the tenth time.

Wales has nowhere near the levels of more infectious variant that England has. Apart from NE Wales and look at the problems there.

You've ignored this fact. But it is a fact.

Despite that, we've had more infections and Deaths per head since the pandemic began.

Vaccination has been brilliant. Everything else, has been shambolic.

Drakeford has a chance to redeem himself, perhaps the election will motivate him?

You clearly are missing the Kent variant is the MAIN strain throughout Wales. Stop trying to make excuses. The reason Wales is currently lower is Drakeford acted more decisively and locked down sooner.

It is now. We are in lockdown its been the dominant strain for about 3 weeks. About 10 weeks later than in England. It is going to become the dominant variant throughout the world.

The clue is in the name. It was ravaging SE England throughout the early winter, when it was barely here at all. It is up to 70% more contagious.

We are not in a better position because Drakeford acted more decisively. Drakeford had nothing to do with it, anymore so than Angela Merkel or Manuel Macron did in their countries. We're in a better position because it isn't the Swansea variant, thank god.

Despite this we STILL have the most deaths and infections throughout the pandemic.

If the Welsh and Scottish governments had their way with independence and membership of the EU. Would anyone like to guess what position we'd be in now?

Well done UK !

I had my Pfizer jab yesterday, delivered by a lovely local nurse, and a young man from RAF Northolt, he was clearly having trouble with some of the Welsh addresses.
I told him that most of us down here would be happier if the language was confined to the mountains, and that if any other country proposed changing their language of common usage, without a referendum, it would be called ethnic cleansing.

Because it is quite important. I'm not point scoring, but we have the most deaths and infections. Despite being in lockdown longer and having the first firebreak.

That isn't good enough.

We dont have the most deaths. The figures used by all political parties show that we dont. The ONS figures are not used and are not accurate. It doesnt need to be a definite reason just somebody suspects. The ONS fIgures are actually higher than the excess deaths as against previous years and are 2 weeks out of date. There is a reason PHW and their counterpart use the figures I use. They are more accurate. As far as the cases figures you used figures that showed Wales had 1000 more case per 100000. This has reduced to 48 and will soon have a higher English rate than Wales based on current trends. The fact it has dropped from 1000 back in May to 48 today shows that throughout that time the Welsh figures have been consistently lower and that was long before the new strain was discovered. Wales currently has just under half the English rate. We have the Kent and South African strains here.
