Drakeford and vaccines 19:27 - Feb 6 with 10953 viewsexhmrc1

For all you Drakeford, Gething and WG slaters on here Wales has currently vaccinated more than any other UK nation.

Wales has overtaken England to lead the UK on the rate of the population getting a first dose of Covid vaccine.

More than 550,000 people in the top priority groups have been given their first doses of Covid vaccines in Wales.

It means 17.7% of the Welsh population has been vaccinated, compared to 17.5 % of the population in England, 14.4% in Scotland and 15.3% in Northern Ireland.

This has been done at the same time as having nearly half the current infection rate as England and without dragging over 80s miles for vaccinations.

Well done to all concerned.

And the problem with Starmer is we just do not know how he would have done.
Odd that Labour are still behind the Tories in the Polls which tends to suggest the British public aint as dumb as we thought.

Quite simply everyone knew the rules and so should the pub and gym owners. We had the 2 metre rule for 4-5 months. They knew fully what they should have been doing. They didnt need to be told anything else. Every shop you went to stated it. If they tried to not use it they were trying it on. I wouldnt have blamed the Tories if that had happened. It would have been expected the landlords knew what the law was just like the staff in Wilcos cafe did and followed it.

Here was something announced 4 months earlier. Are gyms and hospitality not work areas. It should have been totally clear. They were just trying it on.

The regulations will mean the 2 metre social distancing rule will apply to any workplace.

As far as the gym is concerned it was a cross fit gym one of the franchises you have previously sung the praises of.

There wasn't any rules though, customers in a pub aren't in their workplace. Some were trying it on because they could. They shouldn't have been able to, there was ambiguity where there should have been clarity and enforcement.

My crossfit gym is safe. I've seen others on the Internet that aren't, people using the same equipment, gathered next to eack other for photos and even assisting each other with weight lifting. Even in Swansea.

Again there should have been clarity and enforcement from the day they opened, I hope there is this time.

Customers arent in a workplace but staff are. The was no ambiguity. The WG had made the 2 metre rule clear from the start and we all knew it. The only excuse anyone could make is that out idiot Prime Minister brought in a 1 metre plus rule in England. It was constantly made clear that didnt apply to Wales. If anything muddied waters it was the action of that fool opening up things that should never have opened. Things that were never going to be safe and which ultimately led to the explosion of cases from September onwards. All actions you not just supported but actually encouraged at the time like opening hospitality gyms and borders amongst other things.

It is no coincidence that after the virus rate dropped to its lowest in Wales in August it started increasing again when pubs and gyms opened and people came back infected from holidays. Up to that schools had opened, shops had reopened, hairdessers re started, tourism took place. Despite all these being opened the rates continued to drop until those listed above happened.

Things are slightly different now with the vaccine but the vaccine will save the lives of those hugely at risk. It wont stop cases rising because most of the cases are in the younger groups who wont be vaccinated for some time and we dont even know what their take up of the vaccine will be.

There was no guidance for customers in pubs or gym's.

It didn't exist. Its not an excuse that it didn't exist, it had not been written by Welsh government, I think it is quite unbelievable really.

When we were getting the gym ready we followed the English guidance because there was nothing else. Other gym's opened as they had operated in March.

You may not believe it but not everyone is aware of any social distancing rules. Many people simply don't care. They need to be spoon fed and punished if appropriate.

You knew as much as I did that there was a 2 metre rule. Why did you follow the English rule when you knew the Welsh rule. You spent all your time slating Drakeford. Was this because of your intense dislike or because you didnt like his rules like you disliked his stay local rule which incidentally England plan doing this time.

There really is no excuse for what you say. Everybody was made aware of the 2 metre rule for months just like they aware of the stay local rule. They deliberately ignored the rules because they and you preferred the English ones.

I agree there should have been more enforcement. People who behaved in this way should have been closed down just like that Boss place in Landore that deliberately broke the rules and all the other places who tried to make excuses after.

I have been to a number of gyms and none of them could really have operated under the 2 metre rule. The equipment is far too close together.

The other day there was photos shown of Heathrow absolutely crammed and some guy said you cant have social distancing in an airport. Fine if you cant operate it safely close it down.

Johnson's efforts to be business friendly and ignoring his medical advice is the reason we ended back in lockdown.

If we had followed policies to stop the virus we would now have everything open and businesses would be able to run.

There was no such rule or guidance in Wales when pubs and gym's opened. That rule was for the general public during lockdown, because of the lack of direct guidance some organisations thought they didn't need to take any precautions at all. Others had to guess.

We operated to a 2 metre rule to keep members safe, there was no guidance that was correct or otherwise, there was in England so to we followed those rules. There was nothing else. We capped attendance at 10 people and limited attendance to 45 minutes.

Pretty much anywhere can operate safely but clear guidance is essential as is enforcement. Otherwise people will, and do, take advantage.

There's no point in arguing, there was no guidance and there should have been.

How can you criticise Johnson when Drakeford allowed a free for all after the firebreak giving Wales the highest infection rate in the world?

We can't stop the virus, that was clear in tonight's press conference, we have to live with it

There was a 2 metre rule. It applied to EVERYONE. Are you trying to say business were exempt. They didnt need to know they had to operate in accordance with the LAW.

This has been on the GOV.Wales site since 4 April. It is absolutely clear. Gyms and Hospitality are workplaces.

The regulations will mean the 2 metre social distancing rule will apply to any workplace, including homes, where work and repairs are being undertaken and outdoor spaces. The new rules apply to those workplaces not already covered by the original stay-at-home rules introduced almost 2 weeks ago.

All businesses will have to take all reasonable measures to ensure the 2m rule is maintained between people on their premises whenever work is being carried out.

There was no guidance for customers. None at all. Do you think all customers who go to pubs think of them as workplaces? Similarly with members of Gyms?

A huge loophole that WG should have closed. There was the 1m + specific guidance in England, which was stupid, but no specific guidance in Wales. If the guidance you refer to was introduced on April 4th, WG had plenty of time to update it ready for pubs to open in August, but they didn't.

Drakeford left room for interpretation and ambiguity. It was a disaster

In fact take a look for yourself:-

https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws

Not a single mention of customers being 2 metres apart only a reference to staff being 2 metres away from them, and it even says that specific guidance for pubs is "to follow". It's February 2021.

Fundamentally I think there should have been specific and watertight guidance for hospitality. There was always a risk in opening pubs and spreading the virus, as there will be this time. WG overlooked it.

Rhetorical maybe but it seems from nationalistic viewpoint which is sickening.

I missed your last but one paragraph. Yes Wales had a huge rate at one time. What you do not say is England's rate was actually higher after. How can I blame Johnson. It is very easy. He has been too lax and not followed his scientific advice. Even today Matt Hancock who is a fellow Tory is saying that Johnson's current plan might end up being extended and he is the Health Minister. The UK would have been in an even worse position now had Hancock, Gove and Whitty not gone to him to convince him to go into lockdown after a cabinet meeting when he intended keeping schools open.

The problem is that like you he wouldnt do what was needed instead attempting to keep business running.

All of his half baked policies were wrong. He talked caution and following scientific advice but did neither. That is what I criticise him for. Some of the things that a Tory supporter like OHG wanted to see he did the exact opposite.

Keeping borders open led to the increase from August and the effect of that policy was felt throughout the UK including Wales. This was done in an effort to look after the travel industry.

The absolutely stupid 1 metre plus rule that his scientists opposed. It is believed that the virus is 20 times more likely to spread at 1 metre than 2 yet he went ahead with it bringing in masks as an excuse to try and stop the likely increase. This was done to make hospitality profitable.

Allowing sports stadia to open not once but twice whilst the virus was increasing hugely. This was absolutely stupid.

Telling people to go back to work whilst the rate of the virus was increasing. There are then photos showing the underground crammed like sardines. No wonder the cases in London exploded.

You can add to this his hurry to open things up when they should have remained closed.

I said this at the time but you opposed it all blaming Drakeford for being too slow so it isnt hindsight. Even OHG who is a staunch Tory wouldnt have done these things and in fairness to Mark Drakeford and Nicola Sturgeon they didnt either.

OHG has raised the point of whether Starmer would have acted differently. We dont know is the truth but given the actions of the devolved leaders I suspect he would have and would have put defeating the virus totally before other considerations.

In a crisis like this that is what the government should have done but Johnson didnt. Following scientific and medical advice should have been paramount but it wasnt as Johnson decided to give into his more extreme members of his cabinet and back benchers. Indeed some of these idiots are complaining about coming out of lockdown too slowly again.

No logic in your cases at all the number of cases and deaths in England and Wales are almost identical, yet Drakeford is praised for his handling of the pandemic while Johnson is blamed.

Just as well the UK sorted out the ordering of vaccines and did not leave it up to the EU.

What I post is fact. Places who have acted firmly havent had anything like the level of problems we have. Johnson has been ignoring scientific and medical advice since June. Even Shapps his own transport minister admitted on TV that they were guided by the science not following it as the devolved areas have. Johnson even suggested we would be back to normal by Christmas and Drakeford when asked about it said he might be being a bit over optimistic. Who was proved right.

Whilst Johnson was opening up stadia twice which lasted 2 weeks each time Drakeford refused to do it. Ask yourself again who was proved right.

Johnson was encouraging people to go back to work. Drakeford advised people to keep working form home. Again who was proved right and who has had to back to what he should have done in the first place.

Johnson has been totally reckless with all his decisions and statements. Had he followed his advisers we wouldnt be in this position.

The facts are just that and you dont like them as you are constantly being proven wrong in slagging off Drakeford.

Highest rate of vaccine, lowest number of cases and deaths who has been right and who is wrong.

These are not excuses they are factual reasons and not based on anything else.

It's not fact. It's your interpretation of a situation. It is frequently wrong.

I'm Welsh, I want what is best for Wales. I'll be honest I don't really care what is happening in England. Boris is useless but he's England's problem in this situation.

Drakeford didn't refuse to open stadiums, he couldn't because our infections levels were higher than the tier 3 level in England in which stadiums were closed.

Unfortunately Drakeford has been proven to be at least as useless. He is our problem. I don't hate him, I don't hate his politics but he has spent half the time being a dithering fool and when he acts decisively getting it wrong. Just look at the longer lockdown for no reason, opening businesses with no guidance, the free for all after the firebreak (called by Starmer), the u turn over holding back vaccines and now no clear route our of lockdown.

We have most infections and most deaths, if you use the 28 day for any reason method we have slightly fewer than England but still far more than Scotland and N Ireland, despite having less Kent variant. That is ultimately what matters. This is fact.

Both Boris and Drakeford are useless idiots - there is no excuse for either. But Drakeford is our useless idiot.

The Corbynistas are total idiots. Starmer needs to get them out. Whilst they are still there it isnt good for the Labour Party but Starmer has shown by suspending Corbyn he has the guts to stand up to them.

It really doesnt just have to be Corbyn or Drakeford all the other leaders from Plaid, SNP, Lib Dems, Labour and even some within the Tory party would probably have acted differently to Johnson.

Look at how the leader in New Zealand acted. That should tell you something.

Johnson has been acting against the wishes of his scientific and medical advisers. I feel really sorry for the likes of Whitty and Co. They have been fighting a losing battle. Whilst the other UK leaders followed the science Johnson decided otherwise.

The 4 medical advisers meet 4 times a week and basically operate under the same principles. Drakeford and Starmer follow it. Johnson doesnt.

You only have to look at the opening of schools. Wales and Scotland have only opened to 7 year olds and as Kirsty Williams the Welsh Education minister said yesterday are hoping to open all primaries but secondaries wont open until after Easter. This is in accordance with international advice. Johnson just decides to open all schools straight away apparently against Chris Whitty's advice. Kirsty Williams is a Lib Dem MP.

Have a read of her statement and the Deputy Medical Office for Wales views on opening schools.
