| Drakeford and vaccines 19:27 - Feb 6 with 10947 views | exhmrc1 | For all you Drakeford, Gething and WG slaters on here Wales has currently vaccinated more than any other UK nation. Wales has overtaken England to lead the UK on the rate of the population getting a first dose of Covid vaccine. More than 550,000 people in the top priority groups have been given their first doses of Covid vaccines in Wales. It means 17.7% of the Welsh population has been vaccinated, compared to 17.5 % of the population in England, 14.4% in Scotland and 15.3% in Northern Ireland. This has been done at the same time as having nearly half the current infection rate as England and without dragging over 80s miles for vaccinations. Well done to all concerned. | | | | |

| Drakeford and vaccines on 22:31 - Feb 19 by exhmrc1 | Because unlike you majority of people actually support the Welsh Governments policies. They believe in fairness for all rather than wanting supermarkets to be allowed items other businesses cant. They support Drakeford's careful approach rather than Andrew RT Davies and his UK leaders reckless approach. They supported the stay local policy which actually started reducing the amount of the virus even though you dont. They support a leader who showed real leadership by living in a shed in the garden so he didnt pass on the virus to his elderly mother in law. Compare this with you taking your kids to your parents and putting them at risk. They realise that Drakeford's policies have led to Wales having less deaths and now lower rates of coronavirus. They want to back a party and leader that has the highest vaccination rate in the UK and done this without dragging very old people miles to centres. |
They support a leader who has killed more people than anyone else in the UK. They support a leader who has resulted in more infections than anyone else in the UK. They support a leader who's party has been in charge longer than any other administration in the UK. Yet its not the leaders fault? I've no doubt he'll be re-elected, because as you demonstrate people are stupid. I also note you get personal again but not address a point I raise. You don't because you can't.

The ONS figures include suspected figures. The UK and Welsh figures use cases where there has been a positive test. The positive test is more accurate than something that is suspected and may not have been. Even the ONS themselves suspect that 17% of the cases were not due to covid. Why on earth do you think the authorities use those figures. It is because they are more accurate. They include only cases where it has been shown someone has had covid and that clearly shows that Wales has had less deaths than England despite your efforts to include suspected cases to suit your argument.

Wrong. Completely wrong. So covid being put on a death certificate by a Dr, to legally state what contributed to someones death is less accurate than someone dying "for any reason" within 28 days of a positive test? Anyway this isn't a disgusting competition between Wales and England and Labour and the Tories. We are at best the second worst nation in the UK for death rates and the UK has one of the highest death rates in the world. How can you actually be happy with that?

Here is the latest statement from the ONS website Deaths involving COVID-19 fall for the first time in six weeks 16 February 2021 There were 7,320 deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) in England and Wales in the week ending 5 February 2021. 11-17 days out of date as of 16 Feb and 15-21 days as of today. This just shows the folly of you using these figures. Nobody anywhere would take a suspected figure that is often 2 weeks out of date as against an actual figure 2-3 days out of date where you know someone has actually had covid. This is why the governments use these figures not the figures you resort to. As far as the differences between Wales and Northern Ireland and Scotland, Wales is far more impacted by what happens from England. Northern Ireland has a large sea between it and England so doesnt feel the stupid Johnson policies like not closing borders. The mass of the Welsh population lives in South East and North East Wales and is only a short distance from the English border and is hugely impacted by it. The bulk of Scotland's population is in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen far further from the larger cities in England. The only larger city near the Scottish Border is Newcastle and that is much smaller than the likes of Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. It is the rubbish you write that is Wrong, Completely wrong and totally fails to understand the reasons for the differences. There is a report today that Johnson is planning on opening all schools in England for all years against the advice of Chris Whitty. This is typical of the reasons the UK has suffered so many cases and deaths. We have a prime minister who talks caution but fails to act in that way and acts against scientific and medical advice. It is noticeable how all the devolved nations are following similar policies and it is England due to Johnson and Co that are the odd ones out.

Everybody makes mistakes but not time after time and ignoring scientific and medical advice. He ignored Medical advice to bring in his 1 metre plus rule along with so many other things. The other 3 countries are following scientific advice and opening schools for the youngest people only. He has been advised to do the same but is reportedly ignoring that and allowing all back. Wrong the English vote Tory as the opinion poll is 18/22 English. With Scotland voting largely nationalist it is hardly surprising. How many times has England voted Labour. It doesnt. When Labour gets into power it has been the result of Welsh and Scottish votes making the difference. How would Starmer have behaved. We dont know do we so we dont know if he had acted more decisively. The likelyhood is he wouldnt have made the same mistakes. He comes with a different outlook. He wouldnt have the extreme right wingers like Patel, Rees Mogg and others in his cabinet and wouldnt be looking over his shoulder at the likes of Baker, David Davies and co who want to keep everything open when they need to be closed

Been the case throughout this entire saga. Even when the devolved administrations have had the power to make their own decisions they've invariably waited for the Westminster Govt to move first. For all the slagging Johnson and co took for "locking down late", Wales and Scotland had the power to do so themselves. They didn't.

That's where this entire argument that Boris has been a disaster and everyone has to clean up his mess fails. It could have been handled differently in (particularly) Wales and Scotland for a year, but it hasn't been really, just subtle differences. When things have been done totally differently they've failed. Wales was supposed to issue a map out of lockdown last Friday, but didn't. They'll wait until Boris has announced his for England tomorrow and do something slightly differently.

I'm struggling to think of a single decision made by the Welsh Gov that wasn't based more in political expediency than in science. Science suggests that outdoor activity is fine. Even organised sports. In Wales we're still told to stay at home in order to appease those in favour of lockdown and too frightened to leave the house, of which there are far, far too many in Wales. Largely because of the imbalance of public sector workers here who get paid regardless.

They did. Here is 1 example. Just before Christmas on 20 December Wales went into full lockdown. Only part of England was placed in the highest Tier by Johnson on 19 December The full list of places going into Tier 4: Kent Buckinghamshire Berkshire Surrey (excluding Waverley) The boroughs of Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings All 32 London boroughs and the city of London. Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough Hertfordshire Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring) What about the Midlands and North. They were brought into lockdown until AFTER Christmas. This is just 1 example there were others where Johnson opened up and other places didnt. Hence why the rates from June/July onwards have been lower than England and why the gap has closed and England's rate is now higher than Wales. You can also look at him getting rid of the 2 metre rule and the Air Bridges rule which caused the increase from the summer onwards

What air bridge Wales does not have an international airport is not relevant. It Drakeford has been so brilliant why has the number of cases and death rates been so similar given Wales sparse population density compared to England and low BAME Population in Wales which are the groups mostly likely to catch the virus and have a higher death rate. NI and Scotland have much lower case and death rates than England and Wales.

Morning scott.# If the Tories were in power in Wales,we would see no credit given at all. I agree with your first 2 comments and have been saying so. Scotia doesnt and hasnt all along. He agreed with Johnson about taking out the 2 metre rule. He supported Air Bridges. He supported opening up quickly and criticised Drakeford for not doing so. Even now Wales and Scotland are taking similar approaches to opening schools opening up to 7 initially whilst Johnson is reputedly getting all schools back. There is a close liaison between Wales and Scotland and to a great extent Northern Ireland. All operate a very similar cautious approach but Johnson doesnt share that as can be seen at the moment. Some of the press are saying that Whitty is not happy at all ages of schools opening. There is a kind of agreement between the 3 nations. There are slight differences but the approach throughout has generally led to similar policies. You cannot have a coalition approach where one of the partners insists on doing this differently to the others. There probably would have been a coalition approach had there been a different Prime Minister who was prepared to act in unison with other nations. In Wales we have a Lib Dem minister of education who works with the majority Labour administration and much of their approach is backed by Plaid Cymru as well
| Drakeford and vaccines on 13:40 - Feb 22 with 610 views | exhmrc1 | Here is a typical example of the cautious approach our Lib Dem Education minister is taking compared to England Education Minister Kirsty Williams has said she would like all pupils to be back in schools after the Easter holidays - but stopped short of promising a full return by the start of the summer term. Giving the Welsh Government's coronavirus briefing on Monday, February 22, Ms Williams said that it was her preference to get all pupils back in schools for the start of the summer term on April 12 in Wales. But Ms Williams said she could not yet confirm the wider return to school in Wales - saying only that she would provide more details before the Easter holidays - which start on March 27. It raises the prospect of many children in Wales not returning to school until more than a month after children in England will all have been back in class - which happens on March 8. Ms Williams said she would not be making promises because she had to follow the scientific advice based on the spread of coronavirus. She said a slow and cautious approach was in line with the policies being taken across Europe and was the right way to ensure that the work of the public in bringing coronavirus under control was not put at risk. "We will be focusing on what the public health situation allows us to do. If we can go faster, then I will grab that with both hands," said Ms Williams. The youngest primary school children in the Foundation Phase years, aged 3 to 7, have started to return to school this week. Ms Williams confirmed that if this went well, all primary school children would be back in the classroom from March 15. She also said children in exam years - Years 11 and 13 - would return then. However she would not confirm details for pupils in other year groups. She said: "We will confirm the situation for other learners before the Easter holidays, but I can tell you that it is my preference to get all learners back in school after that break. I promise to provide further details on how this will look when I can do so." She said that provided the return of the youngest pupils to classrooms this week went well, all primary aged children would go back from March 15. She said: "If conditions continue to improve over the next three weeks we will be in a position to see all of our primary aged children start to return to their classrooms from March the 15th. "At the same time, we would also like to see those in years 11 and 13 in schools, and those doing similar qualifications in colleges able to return to face to face learning in a safe and flexible way. "Where possible, we also want to give some flexibility around other learners, such as Year 12 and those in Year 10 who may also have been entered for qualifications this summer." The start of the return to school in Wales comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to tell MPs that all pupils in all years can go back to the classroom in England from March 8, with outdoor after-school sports and activities allowed to restart as well. The infection rate across Wales remains 83 per 100,000 population based on the seven days up to February 15. Infection rates have reduced to levels not seen since September. | | | |

I have never supported abolishing the 2m rule, although don't forget. Hospitality and gyms in Wales opened with no guidance as to social distancing whatsoever. The events of last summer clearly demonstrate there was no benefit to us being under more restrictions for longer. We ended up with the highest infection rate in the world. We should not have people on furlough for a day longer than they need to be - most of them will be on low wages in the first place and poverty is a bigger long term killer than covid. The emergence of variants has definitely changed travel, if we can be confident no country has cases of new variants and a very low incidence I don't see a problem with travel. Especially with enhanced testing. The problem is that virtually nowhere screens for variants the way the UK does. The South African variant is getting a foothold in France and we absolutely cannot stop travel between here and there. Our shop shelves would be bare. As the Oxford vaccine doesn't seem to work against this variant, and nasty reinfections, this is a big concern. Opening schools to everyone on March 8th in one go is lunacy. Aside from that I'd rather all of the UK was following the same plan.

As far your last paragraph I think most would including Mark Drakeford who has said so on numerous occasions. The problem is Johnson acts unilaterally so it will never happen. He is far less cautious than Drakeford or Sturgeon who are operating similar policies now for school openings by bringing younger groups then older pupils later whereas Johnson has decided to bring all pupils back against Chris Whitty's advice. All through last summer you consistently backed Johnson's policies while criticising Drakeford for not following them. The policies that were responsible for raising the virus rate from June onwards which meant England's daily rate was higher than Wales. Not opening pubs, gyms etc and supporting Air Bridges and keeping border open. All policies that led to the mess we have been in. You talked about Gyms being safe and it now appears there are huge dangers in opening them. Similarly with pubs. My step daughter's boyfriend caught covid and believes he caught it in the gym. My son was told to self isolate and the only place he had been was the gym. 3 of his friends from his old cross fit gym in Cornwall had caught it. Odd coincidence isnt it. As far as social distancing everyone in Wales was aware there was a 2 metre rule for social distancing so why didnt gyms and hospitality realise that. Certainly the cafe in Wilco's did and operated it when they reopened. [Post edited 22 Feb 2021 14:35]

I was a four times per week Gym goer. There was a rumour of COVID and it shut for a day . Enough for me to quit. My daughter is a personal trainer with own business. She hires a very small gym which has obviously been closed. She trains one to one. Much of her work is done via her website. Tough times

| Drakeford and vaccines on 14:33 - Feb 22 by exhmrc1 | As far your last paragraph I think most would including Mark Drakeford who has said so on numerous occasions.

Do you think businesses opening with no guidance as to social distancing was a good idea? Because I don't. They didn't realise they had to follow it because they weren't told they had to, they needed to make money so basically went back to normal operations. Guidance wasn't produced by WG for several weeks. What would you say if the Tories had done that? Gym's can be safe, pubs can be safe, opening with no guidance is asking for trouble. My gym is absolutely safe, despite there being numerous medical staff who attend there hasn't been a single case. For a gym to see three people getting infected they obviously weren't following the rules, and plenty don't. They should be fined. When places reopen there will inevitably be an increase in cases, it happened last summer hopefully the vaccines will keep a lid on it this year. It is about controlling that increase. We cannot stay in lockdown any longer than absolutely necessary. Enforcement has to happen, take a look at this:- https://www.walesonline.co.uk/ I know Alan Reynolds is a legend in these parts, but after the first instance they should have had a huge fine. The behaviour of this pub is disgusting and arrogant. They've got what they deserved, but too late.

Quite simply everyone knew the rules and so should the pub and gym owners. We had the 2 metre rule for 4-5 months. They knew fully what they should have been doing. They didnt need to be told anything else. Every shop you went to stated it. If they tried to not use it they were trying it on. I wouldnt have blamed the Tories if that had happened. It would have been expected the landlords knew what the law was just like the staff in Wilcos cafe did and followed it. Here was something announced 4 months earlier. Are gyms and hospitality not work areas. It should have been totally clear. They were just trying it on. The regulations will mean the 2 metre social distancing rule will apply to any workplace. As far as the gym is concerned it was a cross fit gym one of the franchises you have previously sung the praises of.
