Drakeford and vaccines 19:27 - Feb 6 with 9976 viewsexhmrc1

For all you Drakeford, Gething and WG slaters on here Wales has currently vaccinated more than any other UK nation.

Wales has overtaken England to lead the UK on the rate of the population getting a first dose of Covid vaccine.

More than 550,000 people in the top priority groups have been given their first doses of Covid vaccines in Wales.

It means 17.7% of the Welsh population has been vaccinated, compared to 17.5 % of the population in England, 14.4% in Scotland and 15.3% in Northern Ireland.

This has been done at the same time as having nearly half the current infection rate as England and without dragging over 80s miles for vaccinations.

Well done to all concerned.

For those of you still under the illusion that Wales has half the infection rate of England

Today's testing figures

England 16,302 positive cases from 741,625 tests. Infection rate 2.19%
Wales 675 positive cases from 19,318 tests. Infection rate 3.49%

Simple really if you do so little testing you infection rate per head of the population will miraculously seem a lot lower.

Wales is only doing half the amount of testing per 100,000 of the population as England.

How many more asymptomatic people would Wales find if it tested properly.

England has increased daily testing from 350,000 a day before Christmas to 750,000 day.

Wales was testing 20,000 a day before Christmas but has reduced it to an average of 10,000 a day. Hopefully the 19,000 it tested yesterday will continue.

I don’t think it’s that simple. Wales maybe doing less tests, but that may be because less people are coming forward and asking for the tests. I am not aware on any recent issues where people can’t access tests, when I wanted a test I was able to book one straight away and it only took an hour from requesting one on line to turning up at the testing centre. The rest of my family had similar experiences.
I am also aware of proactive testing taking place between employers and the Health Board but it tends to be intelligence led. An employer I know did it and discovered a number of asymptomatic carriers.

More testing is great, but it has to be targeted properly or it’s just a waste of resources.

Never a waste of resources if it finds new cases so people can self isolate.

Parts of north Wales are still too high now is not the time to reduce testing

As you say it is pointless doing more tests. The positivity of the tests currently being done is falling. There was nearly 20000 tests today with an average positivity of 7.5%. Swansea's was 6% and Neath Port Talbot 6.6%. Everywhere else in South Wales was in single figures except the Vale of Glamorgan with 10%. The figure is higher in Powys and parts of North Wales but they are way lower than even a week ago. The Powys figure is hugely impacted by a small number of cases in Knighton and Presteigne and the Rhyader area. Due to its population size a small number of positive cases can have a large impact on its figures. The weekly positivity to 1 Feb was 10.5% for Wales so it has dropped by a third.

The test figures take several days before being included on the figures and the lower tests recently are probably reflective of the snow and bad conditions on the weekend with people staying in rather than going out for testing. The increased testing figure today is also probably a reflection on that and might happen over a couple of days.

This is also reflected in the lower number of vaccinations a few days ago.

Who said testing was being reduced? Where is the evidence to say testing is being reduced? The numbers being tested are lower, but that may be because less people are coming forward for tests.
I haven’t seen any articles in the press or social media of late to say people in Wales can’t get book a test, when I checked earlier there was availability in all of the Welsh counties and tests could also be ordered on line. Most of the people I know who’ve needed tests had them within a few hours and I also know the Health people are undertaking intelligence led targeted testing.

Great news about your grandparents.

Maybe the reason for the massive increase in vaccinations in Wales, is because some people did bump their gums.

Absolutely, things only improved after the WG got some extreme criticism. Now they have gotten a shift on and done very well but we can't let them rest on their laurels, we need to keep the pressure on them.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Even you don't believe that Cat.

Is there anyone's criticism in particular that made them act you reckon? And how exactly are you or we, going to keep the pressure on them exactly?

I think Drakeford's ill advised comments about holding the vaccine back and Gethin's swift correction, certainly speeded things up!

I certainly do believe it, they got a pasting on social media and in the mainstream media too, they were heavily criticised on the news. The Uk news on BBC.

I generally don't like social media but the politicians are all on it these days and they get emails from us plebs too.

So come on Neathie, try and deny the First minsiter didn't come under pressure? He clearly did, from the media and from politicians.

I'm not part of a "lot" I'm just pointing out that everything Westminster has done Wales could have done differently. We've done well in just one aspect and a thread is started lauding the Welsh Government. I'm not prepared to accept it.

Shutting our border in March would have been too late, thousands of UK residents had already brought it back to the UK.

It wouldn't be a single lorry driver when there are thousands bringing our food every day, one person is all it would take though.

Nobody is flooding in to the country, they need to test negative and isolate. If Drakeford didn't think this was sufficient then he could go further as Sturgeon has done

You aren't going to find a needle in a haystack if you don't look, and as reports suggest that the Oxford vaccine does not work to prevent symptoms, at all, against the South African variant then we should be trying. This on its own could set us back a couple of months.

Its been Drakeford ahead of Johnson throughout.

Johnson late to everything because he thinks he is exceptional.
Drakeford has listened to the science because he gives a damn.

As I have said several times, I don't do facebook or instagram or any of those sites. This is the only social media I post on. There's a good reason for that too, I'm almost completely housebound, I raely go out, like a lot of people right now.

Those links proved that Drakeford was under pressure for the poor start to the vaccine roll out, you know that thing you said even I didn't believe.

That last bit, so what was it even I didn't believe then? It was being under so much pressure that made them get on with it.

You know, for someone who's not a Labour supporter you do a lot of defending of them. It must be a case of "as long as it's not the tories" I guess.

Makes no odds if you use one or 21 versions on social media, just pointing out that for someone who hates it, you're here a lot.

I never once said that Drakers wasn't under pressure did i. The thing i said that even you didn't believe was "Absolutely, things only improved after the WG got some extreme criticism".

Because I'm not a one eyed Tory that's why. I haven't painted myself into a corner where i have to hate everything everybody else does, or even how they look. I've never hidden my hatred for the Tory party, and I'd imagine I'll be the same when I'm on my death bed. Vile bastards.

Now, you are one of those posters that will go around and around till the cows come home, so I shall let you crack on now. But don't forget the crux of the post, that you think that the rate of vaccine roll out has only got to where it was because of people on social media giving them extreme criticism (which I've already pointed out has been the case for every single decision they have or have not made).

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

The statement above is complete rubbish. Here is an article from our Health Board on 8 December outlining exactly how the vaccination was going to be rolled out and the difficulties of using Pfizer. The 2nd vaccine ie AZ was always going to be used in surgeries and was always going to quicken up the pace. This was released BEFORE the media and the likes of you started going on about us being slow. It outlines NHS staff would be vaccinated in hospitals first then others would be vaccinated when the second vaccine was received as has happened.
