It is completely wrong that front line NHS staff be offered a 1% pay rise for those on less (for arguments sake) than 35k
On the other hand (as an example & there are many) I don’t agree that an orthopaedic surgeon who has done very little work in the past 12 months, earns around 100k deserves a 12% pay rise. ( Don’t preach to me they have done other work as I work in the industry & know the facts).
It’s a shame but I would imagine impossible that NHS staff cannot be individually assessed yearly as it is done in the private sector, if you perform well then you are given a bigger pay rise than someone who is work shy (which you see in every industry).
As we all know many in the private sector have had a 20% pay cut for up to 11 months of the previous year. [Post edited 5 Mar 2021 7:51]

I well remember them as very eager to strike . Remember the green godesses. The police being the patsies tuck in the middle accompanying tenders as they went to put out fires whilst the FBU kept the braziers going. Funnily enough Police cannot strike,they don't have a right to strike.Why ? They are essential a service.
Imagine if they went on strike .They have every right. Years added on to Pension eligability,increases in contributions that would make a civil servant weep and all for getting sh@t on by successive government. Police and Firemen barely looked at each other unless they were at a Fire together .No love lost. Plenty of firemen had contempt for Police Officers for political reasons,ie,Thatcher and the pay increases she implemented although she did not instigate them. Cunning women as he took the credit.
Real people who need the biggest rises are Paramedics. Heroes every one and those that face the biggest dregs in society face to face and have to treat them even when piyysed on -literally.

I was stating fact,one that many will not appreciate or understand.
I wouldnt do a fireman's job a I hate heights and the smell of burning flesh. I also do not like bringing dead kids out of burning buildings.They do a job mosy wouldn't .They again are a body of people who have their equipment stolen ,damaged or even set on fre and also ,unbelievably get abuse-from the very tw@ts that they are trying to save.
