| Apprenticeships 15:39 - Jul 21 with 2038 views | CountyJim | Just been speaking to a Electrician doing work on my house he was saying he's having trouble getting a young lad/girl because basically they just got their phone in their hands all the time and not taking notice. | | | | |
| Apprenticeships on 16:00 - Jul 21 with 1564 views | Whiterockin | Is he prepared to pay them a decent wage? The minimum wage for a 16-17 year old is £4.81 and hour under £170 a week for 35 hours and if the parents are on benefits their earnings are deducted from the benefits. Makes no sense for some youngsters to get a trade if its going to hit the family. | | | |

Fair play to him for paying over the minimum apprenticeship rate. Many don't.

| Apprenticeships on 18:05 - Jul 21 with 1435 views | AguycalledJack | We had the same. The sparky had an apprentice with him who sat on his arse playing on his phone. The sparky felt he couldn’t say anything as it was the boss’s son. He had previously raised concerns but the boss wouldn’t have it. Neighbours just had their garden done. Big job, by a guy on his own. Got talking to the contractor and he said he couldn’t get anyone as when he’s previously tried all they did was be on their phone all day. I’m 48 and run my own business. The younger generation have a totally different work ethic to what I had when I started work. | | | |

I did an apprenticeship when I left school in 1979. First six months on yts, then they took me on for three years. Paid for college etc, gave me loads of time to concentrate on the band, Saturdays off for football. I committed to them totally in return, made great mates who I still have today. Mate iof mine has a farm in bishops Cleeve near Cheltenham. All year round. Spuds, etc. Can’t employ British people, when he does they are slow, don’t turn up on time, Moan about back aches and one kid got his mum to pick him up after an hours graft because his hands got dirty. He mostly employs Eastern Europeans. Has even laid on buses from Poland there and back. Pays £12 an hour, work as long or for as many days as you want. The UK is reaping what it sows ( scuse the pun )

My first pay packet in 1975 as an apprentice with the Gas Board was £11 and that was for a 40 hr week. £88 a week now apparently. I survived. [Post edited 21 Jul 2022 19:47]

Are they graduates at £30k? Do you mind if I ask what type of work they do for that kind of money.
| Apprenticeships on 21:16 - Jul 21 with 1292 views | builthjack | My mate owns a hardware shop. They have to put their phones in a box and only have them during breaks. Anything important family can phone the shop. Good idea, So much work time is lost to people messing on mobiles. | |
| Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

I think a lot of this has to do with how ill prepared they are as a result of the curriculum. There are very few consequences for non compliance and the first interaction they have with employers is at interview or during a work trial. There's a lot of work around careers guidance needed for young people.

I retired from industry in 2017 , even then many of the experienced staff lived on their phones , what do their children see in their homes if that is the example they set . On the positive side , I now work part time in retail , there are some great casual younger generation staff , also hard working , who do leave their phones off the shop floor . The incessant pinging and quick glances of their messages by the older element , in my experience is not great , one older guy gets pinged every time an event happens in a football match . Spread betting I believe it is called . .
