He was the only one with enough pace last year to rescue a number of breakaways that was why he ended playing deeper than Grimes so we actually ended up playing 5 at the back and 5 up top and nothing in the middle.
If the midfield has to constantly go deeper than the defence there must be something wrong.Defence extremely slow last year's? We should now have a stable defence in Cabango, Darling and Woods, young and are going to make mistakes but protect the flanks better and who knows? | | | |

Which is why we need to protect the flanks.
With players who can match the speed of wingers and forwards.
There will always be players who will cause problems with there pace,skill or physicality
Last year we struggled with all three we were slow and put under pressure we folded easily.
Eg
We suffered under the high ball especially as shown by the loss of Cacbango against Bournemouth
And we suffered down the left flank not so much down the right as we had Laird and Christie in front of a slow but steady Latibeaudie.
This year with the addition of Darling and Woods it has given us more of a physical presence defensively but the loss of Manning showed how weak we are on the left without a player of his defensive qualities
I quite like Woods on the right because he has more pace and height but with less experience than Latibeaudie he needs protection at times.
With the players we have I would play 4 at the back.
Left to right ,Manning, Darling, Csrbango and Wood
We end up with at least with 4 or even 5 playing 3 at the back anyway restricting the midfield ability to get further up the park
With 4 at the back you could play Oko Flex on one side and Congreve on the other with their pace and skills could cause problems and still offer some protection to a back four who wouldn't need so much.
Back to Downes he offered us skills that we had to use defensively but could have been used so much better if we weren't left with such a poor defence last year. | | | |

He only wrote what he did about Flynn Downes because he was signed by Martin.
The get out, Downes was always destined for the top was rolled out later......if that were the case then surely he would have signed for a team other than Swansea when we signed him.
I think the majority could see with our own eyes how good he was......when you have an agenda then you don't see or say things that align with reality.
Downes was superb with us and is starting to make a name for himself as a premier league player. | |

The 14m is very welcome though. Given that Swansea got Piroe Flynn Obafemi for about £4m it looks a good deal. £9m with another £5m on appearances. Swansea need that extra cash as soon as possible. |  |
