I couldn't understand last night's line up, surely we should have been playing as close as possible to our opening days team . And I was the first to say Oxford was only a friendly, but Bristol City beat them 4-1

| Michael Duff makes startling admission with ten days to go to the new Championsh on 08:42 - Jul 26 with 2459 views | dobjack2 | Wasn't the message from the top something along the lines of assessing the squad with an emphasis on promoting from within before signings? If that was the case Duff has assessed the squad and made his assessment public. Perhaps the performances in the last 2 games were needed, as the results from the behind closed doors practice matches could have been giving a misleading picture to those at the top. | | | |

Slightly surprised that Yates was replaced by Piroe at HT. Surely Yates needs more game time, unless he isn't fit or carrying a slight injury, as, if as expected Piroe will be transferred. Playing Piroe can bring a risk of injury, or do the club expect a very late transfer, so he will play a few games for us?

Duff should have seen all there was to see in the closed door games. With two games left he should have been tinkering with formation and a couple of positions but fielding a starting 11 (for a half or 60 minutes) that he would want in the Birmingham game to give them time together in a more serious game. Our academy players are a million miles from what Duff appears to want. The under 21s play effective, attractive, possession based football. Sticking them in a hoofball situation will make the best of them look poor. The Under 21 side that beat Carmarthen would have been more effective against Bristol Rovers.

I'm sure that Duff saw all he needed to see in the practice games. I presume that all that our owners would have seen were the results. I also would have expected tinkering not what we've seen in the last 2 games, presumably Reading will see his first team, injuries notwithstanding. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Duff, should also have seen from videos of our previous games, if he has watched them that we "don't do" 3 at the back very well and do not have a forward tall enough for hoof ball. So, like Martin he appears to have come here with pre-concieved ideas and said that players that were playing well at the end of last season (less Manning of course) are "not Championship quality. Sounds a bit like Swansea was not a proper club.

How much is possibly down to Duff being told to use what he has, the youngsters, as I believe Martin was towards the end. In fairness Duff has and now stated in public that they are not good enough yet. It's now up to the board to back him after his professional appraisal.
| Michael Duff makes startling admission with ten days to go to the new Championsh on 14:32 - Jul 26 with 1790 views | magicdaps10 | It's am admission that we have heard from Potter, Cooper, Martin and now Duff. I think it gets to a point where the people who are in charge of it can't ignore it and have to look at themselves rather than elsewhere. I just think it's from frustration and from promises and words said to each prior to them taking the job on or build up to transfer windows. | |

I’d have thought that any manager new to the job would only make these comments behind closed doors. For him to go public either means he’s not the diplomatic type, which will cause problems wherever he goes or, he’s fed up if telling them and now has gone public. It seems very early in his tenure for that to happen.

I would tend to agree, him giving a number of 5/6 players is not going to go down well with the board and it's giving people a gentle kick in the direction he wants it to go. If you remember, Potter had some serious issues a few weeks into his reighn and he nearly walked......i remember chatting with his coach Hemberg(sp) and he/they were not happy that some of the promises given were being back tracked on.

If only we'd bought him a few more like Asoro and McKay so he didn't have to use those useless kids form the academy.

On a serious point, which youngsters do you think are ready for the match day or championship squads? Which do you think would benefit more from a loan?

Well I suppose if plans had to be changed to get cheaper options with no planning for it prior because it's not what was expected or instructed then you run the risk of buying poorly. It could be argued that is what happened.......not suggesting that us the case but there is akways likely a story that might make it clearer.

I would have thought our players wouldn’t be too happy either.

Abdulai needs a loan. He won't learn anything more in u21s football and we're overstocked in his position at senior level. The rest are young enough that we can have patience. We're not a club that produces many teenage sensations, and good loan offers are unfortunately rare. Congreve's injury unfortunate as it would be good to see how his senior exposure has impacted his chances of going out somewhere. Josh Thomas might be able to make an impression as a raw bundle of energy up front, but I don't think there's anyone else ready for imminent advancement given the system and style Duff seems to prefer, and competition for places. For whatever reason we've not been producing natural wide players, the talent is all central.

We blooming shouldn't be. Last january we knew we needed 2-3 players, move on to now and the squad is even lighter. I think saying 5-6 players couldbe 2 short. How does this sound, a new keeper, 2 full backs, 1 centre back, 1 midfielder and 2 strikers? Possibly 2 midfielders... Anybody who is surprised and/or alarmed hasn't been paying attention. What Duff says is true and depite certain people believing our young guns will save us it is always the case that fewer academy players actually make it than the number we need. All the best young talent is hovered up by the EPL giants and sent out on loan which leaves clubs like us struggling to cling onto anyone worthwhile. Slowly but surely the EPL money is suffocating football in the lower divisions. It's taking all the best talent and we then see very average players demanding a stinking fortune to play in the Championship. many of them who are not good enough for the EPL are on North of 40k per week and no Championship club can sustain that.

I can see we may need a centre back for back up if copper is not deemed good enough and we play 3. But I can’t see how we need 2 midfielders. Midfield our strongest position. Grimes, jay, ntcham, copper, Pato, Allen, Walsh (albeit both injury prone) plus now Abdulai, congreve, cotterill all for backup. I don’t want any more mids tbh. Much rather spend elsewhere. Also don’t think we need any strikers, since we signed Yates. Strikers. Unless Piroe goes then we will need one. Cullen should be fine as back up to Piroe and Yates imo.
