From £15 billion to £10 billion

about bloomin time, some of the projects and countries we give money to is ridiculous.

We give money to India & China, who both have space programs.

We gave Rwanda £64 million, they then gave £30m to Arsenal to have "Visit Rwanda" on their shirt sleeves

Not a big enough cut.

Instead of giving the money to the country we'd be better giving it to the charities that work on the ground in these places. We'd lose less to corruption (I would hope) and I reckon we'd see better results too.

PS, yes, happy to see a cut, we've been cutting everything else besides foreign aid. That 5 billion covers the increase to the armed forces who also do a lot of good work in foreign countries, our troops have helped in mnay disaster hit areas.

I wonder how that 5bn will be spent , perhaps on a wall across the channel between us and France .Now that would be money well spent

4 billion to the armed forces for more cyber capacity and some kind of space ability, whatever that is!

We don't need a wall, a minefield would do.

This government should be ashamed of themselves.

Now this.
Pensions next.

In fairness they tough on the poor children and the old.
But not tough on the bullies and liars in their own party.

We give money to China?

Why?

Found this...

MPs have requested a review into why the UK sent £71m in aid to China in a single year, despite the country having an economy five times the size of the UK’s.

Figures on British aid to China were “buried” in the Department for International Development’s (DfID) annual report, which was “quietly put out this week as MPs go on their summer holiday”, the Daily Mail says.

Why does Britain send aid money to China?

China became the world’s second largest economy in 2010, making the idea that Britain - with the world’s fifth largest economy - should send it aid money seem counterintuitive.

However, DfID formally closed its old Chinese aid programme in March 2011, replacing it with a development policy based on “shared global development objectives, global public goods and poverty reduction,”

I'm a great believer in this country , proud of its history and achievements but those in power must realise that we are no longer a global power , our status in the world has substantially diminished and without the influence we used to have .We're providing aid to India which has a far superior space programme than we ever had and China 's economy far exceeds ours. Both of the above are higher than us in the top ten richest countries of the world so just who are we kidding.

Yes they should be ashamed of themselves.

Letting people in this country die waiting for medical treatment while borrowing money on the international markets to send to other countries which we all then have to pay back with interest.

Very ashamed of themselves.

I always assumed (yeah, I know) that aid to China amounted to a bribe hidden in plain sight for contracts for British companies working on infrastructure etc in China.

I'm all for poverty reduction but the Uk has enough poverty of it's own. India, China, they have enough money for Nuclear arms and space programmes. China has spent billions in Africa, they should look after their own people first.....and so should we.

Foreign aid should go where it's genuinely needed AND the recipient doesn't have nuclear or space programmes, preferably not massive armed forces either!

Probably not a popular choice but I’m pretty sure apart from political reasons, access, trade, military advantage etc why now in the current climate we look a little bit inwards as a country.

I agree that India and, in particular, China, should look after their own.

However, we are still one of the richest countries in the world and I see nothing wrong in sending aid to those countries where people are starving to death.

We might be hard up at the moment, but as far as I know we don't have people dying through lack of food.

I'm more generous than this government. I'm certainly not rich but I estimate I give way more than 0.7% of my disposable income to beggars on the street - and that's just on a Saturday morning 😇

And then we have foreign companies working on infrastructure in the Uk. China for one, Huawei, the proposed Nuclear site, I'm sure there'd be others.

Why not just give contracts to our own, homegrown companies and let their expertise speak for itself abroad?

And yes, the Uk is not a major international power any more, militarily we'd probably struggle to defend the Falklands again (if it just happened today) and politically we need to keep our nose out of many places.

We send money to those countries but not a lot of it actually gets to people starving to death which is why they are continuing to starve to death leading us to send them more money.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Fiery Jack

if we are so rich as a country then why do we have to borrow the money to send abroad?

Surely you are quite capable of sending as much of your own money as you wish to salve your social conscience?

It's the volunteering everybody else's money whilst service, health and housing provision in this country is in such need that some of us object too.

Send your own money and volunteer to go to the back of the queue at the hospital while the rest of us get seen too if you wish but stop volunteering our money and resources so that you can feel better about yourself.

Scrap Trident replacement and save £205 billion.
Simples.

No other small nation spends such stupid money on their armed forces.
They spend it on pensions, health, education, and skills.

We are mugs.

Debt (public sector net debt excluding public sector banks, PSND ex) has exceeded £2 trillion for the first time; at the end of July 2020,

Yes, I do a monthly contribution to Oxfam Water Aid - not a lot - the price of a few cups of coffee in Costa - that's my choice. It's hardly gonna break my bank.

Also, I've worked and paid taxes for 40+ years and I don't give a hoot if 0.7% of the tax I pay is spent on foreign aid.

It doesn't salve my social conscience, as you put it. It's just the decent thing to do as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe skinflints like you should have a 0.7% reduction in your tax if you're so offended by the idea of helping the poorest on the planet.

Unbelievable comments on here, probably from people ensconced on their sofas, fat-bellied, sipping wine, half asleep and idly flicking the channels over.

As for being at the back of the queue for hospital appointments. Been there, done that, but it never crossed my mind that it would be a good idea to scrap foreign aid just so the queue could be shorter. That's sick.

Jesus, you're even beginning to put me off jazz now 😤

We aren't sending aid, it's inducements and bribes. That's what foreign aid really is. There's nothing altruistic about it

Because that's the way we roll?

Damned if I know.

Do we?

If we do, clearly it's wrong.

Some countries - India and China - are rich enough to look after their own poor - but clearly they don't.

I assume most of our aid goes to more deserving places.

It's not my area of expertise, any more than it is yours. I don't have a load of facts and figures to hand, the same as you don't.

But if 0.7% bothers you, fine.

It doesn't bother me.
