Any books on the go? 13:53 - Oct 20 with 3423 viewsLohengrin

A couple of excellent titles here for the politicos among us. I’ve been revelling in these this last week. Bullock’s a good writer and he’s done a first rate job of extricating men and their ideas from the oblivion of time.

Don’t waste any time in lockdown vegetating in front of the telly when you can profit from it by learning. It can give you the keys to doors you didn’t previously know existed.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

I'm 2/3 of the way through this:

Once that's out of the way I'll start on this:

I see your penchant for obscure & niche political/military history continues apace, Loh, and good luck to you.

Unfortunately, these days, due to a combination of age and work-tiredness, I find myself dozing off after reading 4 or 5 pages of any text. Gone are the days when I'd rip through 2 or 3 books a week.

As it happens - and I may have mentioned this before - the Independent Labour Party was founded in Bradford in the wake of a strike at the local Manningham Mills in 1890.

These huge mills (the biggest factory in the world when they were built) are still standing, but, of course, are no longer working, and have been converted into numerous apartments.

I pass their grim facade each day, on the way to and from work, and I thank the Lord I've never had to work in such a satanic place, and, just occasionally, I'll think of their place in the distant history of the ILP.

Read my first Hemingway this week (The Old Man and The Sea) at the behest of a new book buddy. Strangely affecting, given his limited style. I liked it. I'm reading A Moveable Feast next. What's your favourite? Having read Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, I may go for For Whom The Bell Tolls too.

Besides that, I've finally got round to reading The Lord of The Rings. Halfway through the Two Towers and I'm very much enjoying. Talking of niche, historical fantasy is piquing my interest recently. Anyone read T H White's The Once and Future King?

Turn the TV off indeed, OP.

World War 2 autobiographies by Fighter and Bomber Pilots for me.
Also some naval engagements as well.

Other than that, well written Science Fiction is my favourite.

Simple sentence structure that Hemingway used was clear and precise, he wasted few words, maybe appeals to my basic reading ability 🤪 I’m not one for fiction, but he does base his books on experience, and my word did he pack it in to his life.

I’m reading a novel about a dog called Spot. It’s really tricky to get into but I think he’s playing with a ball at the moment.

There are many books on the Brigadas Internacionales, too numerous to mention, the older ones are packed with heavy reading, but then the whole thing was packed with with heavy principles.

Just ordered one and it's had good reviews as it's concise.

Wish I had written a book

He has, you know. Peter Kemp’s account of his time in Spain has finally found its way back into print for the first time since 1957. I was mesmerised with Kemp as a schoolboy. To say that he’d led a swashbuckling life would be a gross understatement!

Thanks too for posting up those photos of the Manningham Mills, much appreciated. I was up in Bradford about fifteen years ago and made a detour to see them. Just my luck at the time the facade was covered in sheeting and scaffolding!

I'll have some of that as well, diolch.

Is his other book any good?

I’d point you and everybody else in the direction of his memoirs without reservation, they’re brilliant.

What a life!

An older book but a very worthwhile, and jaw dropping read, is "Stalin's Terror" by Robert Conquest.

If you can get hold of a copy then read this in conjunction. It’s a real eye-opener...

Phew just finished this thrilling tale, the twist at the end was just unbelievable. Incredible writing, kept me in suspense on every page. I don’t want to spoil the ending for those who haven’t read it so click off now if you don’t want to know what happens...

On a serious note I’ve hugely enjoyed this.

Very poignant with one letter in particular hitting home as it ends halfway through as the soldier was killed whilst writing it. The accounts of the banter being sent back and forth. Soldiers deliberately missing their shots or sending warning flares up to warn their mates in the opposition trench that something was about to happen. For a small brief moment humanity won out and people refused to fight despite their commanders best efforts.

You should go there, you know: Poperinge in western Flanders where the events of Christmas 1914 took place. It’s well worth a visit.

Going to come across as a right philistine here, but I’ve heard Paddy Kenny’s book is meant to be a cracker!

Nowt wrong with a sport autobiography! If I feel like an easy read, I'll choose one. I recommend Andre Agassi's 'Open'. A very revealing, honest read, and a genuinely good book.

Unashamedly, I do like an easy going read. I remember taking Moby Dick on holiday with me many years ago and thinking why has it taken 40 pages to describe a whale hunt! I put it aside and read Roy Keanes much publicised autobiography which was crap really. I’ll give that Agassi one a go though, was a real fan of his as a teenager. Thanks for the recommendation.

When I am in the mood for more of an involved read though, I do like Niall Griffiths books as they’re based largely where I was bought up and he really nails the weirdos and strange places in that area!

I would love to go there. It’s claimed in this book in some parts of the line the truce went on til Easter. It was the sinking of the luistiana that reignited anti German sentiment.
