I'm sure I posted about this when I complained about our council tax being £184 per month, in Skewen! 22 LGA's is a mickey take. Lets compare Wales to Bradford, up there they have over 530,000 residents. Wales is 3.2 million, roughly, at those figures we need 6 maybe 7 councils, not 22. Million get gobbled up in wages, jobs for the boys and girls that we don't need.Money that could be spent on schools and hospitals. This is partly why we need Labour out. We need someone in who will address all our problems including too many politicians at all levels. Instead we'll likely end up with a government that wanst to increase it's size by 30% and waste more tax payers money.

I work with people in that role in local authorities across South Wales. The relevant director in Swansea is a pretty sound guy. I have no idea how much he earns, but there are 25 of them in Wales. If you are correct that's not far off £3 million a year just on that one role. How much would we save across the board if we went back to having county councils? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We do have county councils. We need less councils, less councillors and politicians in general, and massive reduction in the wage bands of top council officials

Yes technically we do but the boundaries have been redrawn. For example, we now have at least five authorities in some areas there used to be one.

Yep 25. Unfortunately you can have excellent people in these roles but they can't polish turds. They work for elected officials and the creme de la creme of those are in Cardiff Bay and that's bad enough. The standard of councillors across the country is diabolical. Genuinely appalling. I'd love to see party politics taken out of any election below Senedd level.

I have dealt with a few councillors over the years, some are tidy but some are blockheads. I think we should cut the number of councils back between 7 and 10, but there’d have to be a lot of money paid out in redundancy etc and t wouldnt be easy as turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. Well Drakeford for one who gets nearly £150,000 pa for running the senedd representing just over 3 million, the London mayor gets £153,000 for running London with a population of 9 million While the prime minister gets £157,000 for running a country of 66 million.

Yes, they want to increase teir numbers by 30% at a predicted cost (as they did the prediction it's probably well on the low side) of 10 million per year. Apparently they need the extra numbers to cope better with their role and thedevolved powers. If these (would be removed) need 80 MS's now with the limited devolved powers, how many will they claim to need if we went indy? This country (Wales) has far too many chiefs and needs more Indians, sorry if that's any kind of "ism" and any offence is purely accidental....we often see councils making savings but we don't seem to lose many managers, it's always front line staff that see the cuts, then the remaining staff are told to do more work in the same hours. Then they are told there's no money for pay rises but the managers wage seems to get bigger. No wonder Wales is in a mess and the Senedd seem incapable of doing anything about it. They actually did try to reorganise the councils but gave up when the WLGA became obstructive. I knowpeople don't like referendums but I honestly feel we need one, one that asks a multitude of questions so the politicians can be in no doubt about what the people want. They need to ask us, do we want the Senedd expanded, do we want the number of councils cut, do we want to keep or abolish the senedd and if keep do we want more powers. I'm sure there are more questions people want answers to. If Drakeford is really so compassionate then do something to help the people because we are suffering under poor leadership, poor investment in most of Wales and under the cosh of far too many expensive politicians and when their wages could be put to much better use.

Great post. Sad that you had to make an apologetic reference to the 'ism', sad times. Imagine cutting politicians in the sennedd or even ridding us of them totally, imagine restructuring the wages of these so-called 'leaders of departments', imagine being run again by Westminster...perhaps we could avoid this... https://www.walesonline.co.uk/ Ol' Prof Drakeford, you must be soooooo proud of yourself and your party...22 years guys, 22!!!

Why would you lie like that? Please provide some proof that Johnson used Tax payer paid "expenses" to re decorate his property. If you can't please withdraw the remark.

Bojo does get tax payer money to refurbish the Downing street flat, 30k. The fuss is all about his alleged plan to borrow extra money, secretly, from tory donors. He may have planned it, lots of people plan things, however, unless they carry through those plans, where is the crime? Bojo is guilty of many things but he's not guilty of something he didn't do.

Tony Bliar spent £860,000 on redecorating/refurbishing No 10 during his time there...tax payers coin too
