Modern slavery 18:28 - Nov 4 with 2516 viewsCatullus

I am genuinely fed up of hearing about hsitorical slavery. people focus on thinsg hundreds of years back, things any decent person knows full well were very bad. All too often we don't hear about modern day people trafficking and slavery.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-59167295

We need to focus on saving people now, we cannot save people who died decades ago. It's crazy to think that there are people forced itno slavery, in Wales, right now.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Modern slavery is a curse.

Raising awareness is the first step to dealing with it. Agreed.

I live near one of these hand car wash places. It’s owned and run by a Welsh bloke but all the workers are foreign, not sure where from, the language seems Eastern European but they have darker complexions. They’re there from early in the morning to late at night washing cars in all weathers. Every few months the entire workforce seems to be replaced with a new group. The whole place is cash in hand. Just seems really dodgy to me.

And they never do a very good job.

We have a few cases nearer to home , Newport recently for example , it seems gyppos are well versed in selecting vulnerable victims to work as slaves . An odious crime and should be punishable by at least 20 years inside

A lot of the hand car washes are owned by drug dealers. It's a nice, cash only business ideal for laundering cash. Much the same as pubs. The people who work there usually earn less than NMW but aren't enslaved.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

But surely if they are earning less than minimum wage, don’t get access to sick pay or holiday pay or anything else that is covered by employment law then they are being exploited at the very least? And where are they getting all these foreign workers from in post brexit/post pandemic world where they only way you can travel is through the people traffickers?

Someone earning NMW off the books isn't paying tax or NI and doesn't mind sacrificing certain things in order to maintain that. It's a huge grey area. The supply of workers is still there and always has been.

The black economy is huge. Far bigger than the Govt will admit probably.

I made this point several months ago.

The truth is, the slave owners of today are largely non-white. So the appetite isn’t there to turn it into a massive campaign.

It muddies the water with the false notion that slavery = white person enslaving black person. And people most certainly don’t want that, they have worked hard to establish that historical fallacy.

There are said to be up to 45 million slaves at this current time. Largely in Asia and Africa but also in Eastern Europe that is filtering across.

Reasons such as this is why I have the stance I do against the social justice warrior types and virtue signalling hypocritical morons.

If they cared about slavery, they would be out there fighting it right or campaigning against it right now, not selectively concentrating on a portion of slavery 300 years ago.

If they cared about oppression, the NBA/Arsenal FC etc wouldn’t be ensuring their brand doesn’t say anything negative about China, who are clearly ethnically cleansing the Uighurs.

If football cared about inclusivity, it wouldn’t be holding the World Cup in Qatar..

The modern woke movement is hypocritical, uneducated, fraudulent and very easily bought. No time for it.

Yes I remember you saying these things. As with all these big business interests, money and good publicity come before the afflicted people.

Big business puts up a facade of doing good, they use smoke and mirrors and a lot of people fall for it. When you get through the facade though the truth is often very ugly.

Absolutely. Some of these establishments “employ” the vulnerable, for example people who can’t speak a great deal of English and asylum seekers who can’t work in the main stream economy and have to resort to cash in hand jobs. Females from Eastern Europe are trafficked in to the sex business, if they have a passport it can be confiscated by the. “Pimp” or the workers family back home could be threatened. Gypsy’s have also held people as slaves.

The points about slavery in other parts of the world are valid.

As Boundy said earlier in the thread the perpetrators need to be sent down for a long time.

I had a fantastic car wash last Saturday, in the one just up from where Casey's used to be.
£7. My car was filthy, it was shining when I came out. Gave him a tenner.

ITV tried to do a piece for black history month this year, where prominent black U.K. figures research their ancestors.

Turns out Alex Scott’s ancestor was a black slave owner and loose women’s Charlene White also discovered her ancestor was a slave owner that owned 26 slaves in the Caribbean.

The narrative pretty much collapsed.

The sooner people realise slavery has affected every race and certain people of every race are also guilty of it, that may go some way to educating people and making them less angry at society.

It’s very telling that when they discover this, they blame the individual “he is responsible” was the line used (and they are correct of course). Yet when it’s a white person that has slave owners as ancestors, the narrative is they are collectively responsible.

There is no difference. Inherited blame is not the answer.

Also the country that harboured the Taliban during their exile from Afghanistan.

The world rewards them by allowing them to host the worlds biggest sporting event. An event that will use infrastructure built using almost entirely by slave labour.

Well done Sepp Blatter.

Arguably the richest man who ever lived was a black Malian African Muslim called Musa. He took 60,000 slaves with him on the pilgrimage to Mecca just to carry his gold. When his wife got hot whilst travelling through the desert he made them build her a swimming pool using the water for the journey. He crashed the entire world economy because he was handing out so much gold in Cairo and other cities. So as you say this narrative the wokeists try to push that the white man has always held the whip hand is entirely and demonstrably false.

I often cite Mansa Musa when slavery is brought up.

https://learnodo-newtonic.com/mansa-musa-facts

Sorry to have to correct you Flynn but it was 60k men and 12000 slaves. Even so, has any other single person in history owned 12000 slaves?

Mansa Musa's wealth, in modern terms, 400 billion dollars. making him the richest man in history and maybe the biggest slave trader too.

They are hiding in plain sight. I often wonder where they all go at the end of the day, they’re probably all crammed together in a grotty bed sit somewhere. I don’t buy this excuse that they’re getting paid a pound an hour which is more than they earn back home therefore it can’t be slavery. If they’re working in Britain they should be paid the legal minimum wage at least, get access to holiday and sick pay, basic workers rights etc.

Slavery exists wherever there’s power. The Romans had slaves, the vikings had slaves, the Greeks had slaves, the Egyptians had slaves, the British had slaves, the Dutch had slaves, the Spanish had slaves, the mongols had slaves, the Russians had slaves, the Japanese had slaves, the Malians had slaves, the islamic states had slaves, the Americans had slaves, the aztecs had slaves, the native Americans had slaves, the Chinese had slaves, the ottomans had slaves. Everybody had slaves.

It would be easy to prove that any race or colour or religion of people from any part of the world has been at some point both a perpetrator and a victim of slavery. Humans being shit to each other is not a new thing. Yet the way the BLM lot and most of the media act it’s as if they’ve got a monopoly on it.
