Disappointed? Relieved? Pleased? What's Your Attitude? 01:01 - Jul 12 with 6906 viewsDylanP

I'm bitterly disappointed. F.U.C.K. This was the year. There was the song; and all the people throwing their beer in the air every time we scored; and the song; and all the young, skillful-looking players, playing good football. Oh and, did I mention that this was the year we had a shot -- and that bloody song raising all my bloody hopes! Damn you Baddiel/Skinner!

Then again, it possible that in a few weeks I might look back and be pleased because, objectively, we did better than I actually expected. Its also possible that there are human beings mature enough to be able to think that now.

What about you? Did you expect us to screw up all along, so you are kinda relieved when we finally reverted to form? Or are you (like me) just reminded of why you hate football and never want to see another game ever again? EVER! (until Saturday, of course)

I am relieved that I am not one of those who are down the tattoo parlour today having a cover up on my "England World Cup Winners 2018" artwork.

The grass is always greener.

Pleased that us proper fans , the ones who go to games or follow them as our team plays are getting our game back from the hangers on who have an opinion on everything and experience of fck all .

I lost interest in England years ago really but this bunch had a go and I am disappointed to see them go out .

There are people who want to see talent win out and want to see beautiful football and beautifully crafted goals. Obviously I do too. But more than that, I want to see my team win. I wish I could be that mature and dispassionate, but I just am not that person. I often think of Greece as the example. Greece have won a European Championship. England have never done that. I would just like to see us win some silverware and don't care if we get there through the weaker group, the weaker side of the bracket, or because the ball took a weird bounce and dribbled in off the goalie's backside. I applaud those who see the bigger picture and recognize that it wouldn't be good for the competition as a whole if the "better" team doesn't win out. However, I have been in love with footie for almost 50 years and in all that time neither QPR or England have won a single damn thing in all those years. I've always loved the World Cup and this one was glorious. I watched almost every game (on TV and DVR). I just wish we could finish with smiles instead of that sick-to-the-stomach disappointment that we are all so bloody used to by now!

Me too, really Dylan, I get all that.

But I'm not gutted the way I was in '96 because then I thought we were robbed. This time we weren't. I'm really disappointed but I don't want Croatia to fall down a hole the way I felt about Andreas bloody Moller (or come to that, Maradona), or the sickness in the stomach when Sol Campbell's goal was ruled out.

I'm one of those who fell out of love with England in the Terry/Rooney years and I feel I've got my team back.

Disappointed to lose obviously, but in a strange way relieved, for the sake of the World Cup, we didn't progress to possibly winning the final.

First off, we did brilliant, for that team to reach the semi finals was a huge achievement, both the players and manager deserve all the credit coming to them. But I recall being far more gutted when we lost out in 1990 for the simple reason, the 90's team was good enough and would have thoroughly deserved to go on to win the World Cup.

That side had some class players, this side at the moment, doesn't. That's not to say it won't, I'd love to see them progress with a few additions in future years and actually look like a side that is borderline invincible. Only then should we have the satisfaction of another World Cup winning team.

A World Cup winning side should be about Pele's Brazil, Beckenbauer's West Germany, Maradona's Argentina, Zidane's France, superb teams with a dynamic individual. That or something along the lines of a Spain team of outstanding players.

Don't think there's anyone near that this time round, but a Mbappe inspired France would be a deserved winner, a Modric led Croatia a decent 2nd. They are the two deserving finalists.

Great post. All I would say is...Belgium seem to me like one of the truly deserving teams. I love Croatia for sentimental reasons (best mate's from there and I visit every year) so will be rooting for them on Sunday, but expect them to lose: Belgium v France seemed like the real final.

A little bit of all 3 Disappointed because well 1 up after 5 minutes plenty of chances to make it two versus a pretty poor Croatia first half whose greater experience particularly in their controlling of a very weak referee helped give them the foot hold in the game they needed.Very pleased to see an England side play with full commitment and desire and playing for England at World Cup is a highlight for them not an inconvenience in their schedule.Think Southgate was maybe a little inflexible in formation and a bit too loyal to certain individuals but take that over Sven and Fabios approach any day of any week.Lastly relieved as my liver would not have coped with the alcohol intake had we won the world cup
some great young talent coming through ie Sancho Cook Foden Chalabah and a very likeable manager and team give me great hope for future.Think the analogy to QPR and our hope for future gives both teams hope
plus no f***ing FFP to stitch England up

is very easy in hindsight but thought he got the subs wrong last night. Sterling was doing well and him going off allowed Croatia to play higher up the pitch with no threat in behind them. I thought Rashford played far too deep and didn;t offer much. Would have brought on Loftus Cheek and tried to keep hold of the ball a bit better as well but overall they did pretty well last night. The way Souness and co have talked you'd think we lost 5-0 rather than 2-1 to a very late goal having missed 3 great chances.. It looked nailed on for penalties for most of extra time.

Been a great world cup though, not just England all the games have been brilliant to watch. Hopefuly England build on this in years to come but can't help feeling this was our chance

Yes was an odd one why Sterling went off when he did. Always knew Croatia would come back at us hard in the second half and arguably we didn't have the experience or nerve to deal with it in the end. Just needed to score that second goal!!

I can't believe we didn't at least take it to penalties, we'd have won it then.

Overall, absolutely gutted. That was an amazing chance - Colombia, Sweden and Croatia to get to a world cup final, and you're 1-0 up in the Croatia game. Can't imagine we'll ever have a better chance again.

Last night I expected Croatia would come out second half and have a big dig for ten minutes and our job was to ride that and then re-establish ourselves in the game. We never managed to do that, it felt like we were clinging on by our finger nails from minute 45 onwards. We just needed a big tackle, a counter attack, a set piece, something to just tip the balance back our way and get a foothold back in the game and it never came and we couldn't do it. Looked a bit too much for us. Such a shame.

Having been a frequent England attender all through my teens and early 20s, I fell completely out of love with it during the Sven era. A loathsome team, full of absolute cnts, half arsedly fcking up games mostly played at that hateful citadel of commercialism Old Trafford. Fat Frank, Big Racist John, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney. Hated them, hated it. So it was nice to at least feel reconnected with the team and the manager here for the first time in ages. He's done exactly the right thing, shovelled all the old twts off to the side and brought through an U21 team that was used to playing with each other, and used to playing at tournaments. Team over individual. And he's carried himself so well and spoken so thoughtfully. Really enjoyed it.

Most of all I'm pleased for Maka and Norfolt from this board, and the other QPR lads that are out there who've followed England home and away through all those sht times, and regularly had to read threads coating the team off on here (rightly, but still) from people who don't go to the games. They finally got to see us really attack a tournament properly and must have had a wonderful time out there. Hats off to those lads.

Agreed - doubt we'll ever get a more 'easy' route to the final.

Of course Croatia in a semi final is always going to be tough, but I think psychologically it's less difficult than playing the likes of Germany., Argentina, Portugal, etc.

I'm not subscribing to the 'once in a lifetime' opportunity theory. Yes we did have a nice run through, yes we didn't take advantage of it, but also yes we have improved a lot in a short period of time. Why can't we improve more to match any increase in degree of difficulty in the route to glory? We need to find half a dozen more proper international players, including one or two of genuine world class. We need to get more club games into the likes of Loftus-Cheek - the failure to do that could have made a vital difference even this time around.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see us find two or three more players by the next Euros and that would give us a proper chance again.

That Sven side was a funny old team , I dont hate him as much as others we had some good times under him
Argentina 3-2
Argentina 1-0
Turkey 2-0
Croatia 4-2
Germany 5-1
Greece 2-2
Portugal 2-2 we were unlucky in that Euros

but then we threw games away like brazil 1-2 , France 1-2 when we were all over them
the Portugal game in 06 was there for the taking
Sven & Beckham turned the squad into a showbiz one full of wags and bravado which turned the public off
I would say the England years under McLaren, Capello (especially him) Hodgson (just awful) were far and away the worst following the national side so fair play to Southgate who has done thing differently like taking the side to the marines , going to the super bowl, changing tactics , getting rid of underachievers like Hart, Smalling, Wilshire,
I was a big critique of him until those friendlies against Germany/Brazil , we had the usual pull outs and so he said "sod you lot" and put in the young uns like solanke, cook, Abraham, RLC, Gomez, Maguire if we had got thrashed then the knives would have been out and he would have been up against it, but he had the faith and was rewarded by some good performances, there is now a progression from the 17s to the first team
and that never happened before , players will pull out of squads at their own peril (Wilshire) because now we have kids who will come in and do better
the u19s are in the European championships and I for one will be watching

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore
