Step forward West Ham? Interesting piece in the Times this morning about the seeming existential threat that relegation would have for them. They have a collection of crocks, has beens and never weres on long term, expensive contracts. They don't even have a ground to raise finance against. Interesting season finale for them.

They've gone right down in people's estimation. They used to have a reputation for attractive football and were often cited as “everyone's second favourite team” , a mantle that passed on the us in the 1970s. Plus of course providing the three players that did so much to win the a World Cup.

West Ham are a club with expectations above their means. They are trying to compete with the big boys, always were a mid/lower end table club even in their old first division days. The London stadium will prove a hinderance to them now they have moved from their spiritual home of Upton Park with a capacity and atmosphere that suited them.

Been saying this to the multitude of 'appy 'ammer irons I work with the last couple of seasons. They remind me of us prior to relegation the first time around, as the OP suggests a team of crocks, journeymen, mercenaries etc at a club run appallingly. They've been circling the drain for a while now, hopefully their time has come. Quite fancy an away day at their place as I've paid for it in advance anyway.

I’m more worried about the state of QPR but West Ham could be the new Coventry never mind the new Sunderland

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

You need to stop worrying mate.

The tanker has started to turn, albeit slowly.

West Ham are not the big club that they and the fans think they are. Sure, they're bigger than us or Charlton or Fulham but not as big as Arsenal or Spurs.

Upton Park was fine. Three of the four stands had already been modernised, just the old chicken run side needed updating and that could have brought the capacity up to around 45,000 (about the same as Chelsea currently) which would be perfectly fine for them.

The whole move to the Olympic stadium was a ridiculous pie-in-the-sky and not needed. It alienated the fans (who I think deserved what they got), moved them away from their roots to a part of London that's not 'theirs' (however much they seem to claim the whole of east and north east London is theirs) and apparently is a god awful place to watch football.

The stadium was never designed to be a football venue after the 2012 Olympics. It was meant to be an athletics venue (probably replacing Crystal Palace) but once the filthy lucre of PL football came a-knocking with both Spurs and West Ham interested that's how it ended up becoming.

The whole deal with the Olympic legacy stank, tax payers paying a huge chunk which is borderline criminal to force this folly through.

It was clear than they need to stay in the PL to keep it viable which anyone knows, certainly from Leeds' experience, you absolutely cannot do.

But they did so fk 'em if it all implodes, they've brought it upon themselves. The warnings were there.

Agree. Coventry is a much better example given the absence of a ground.

This. If they go down they are in humungus sh*t unless they go straight back up with much the same squad.

Never knowingly right.

I think the reputation started to get tarnished when the porn barons took over and any love neutrals had for West Ham has been seriously diminished with the Olympic stadium scandal

The whole community feel and atmosphere that sustained the club has been drained away to a large extent.

Have never liked them since they took 3 out of 4 points off of us in 75/76 while going on to finish 18th. That's all West Ham were to me growing up, a team that permanently finished in the bottom six.

I didn't realise they finished 18th as they were near the top of the table before December!

It was the results against them & the Sheffield United away game that cost us the Championship rather than Norwich. I don't think we scored in those three games!

I would love them to drop.

Living in Essex you have to put up with your fair share of Hammers. Some are ok but some are so deluded it’s ridiculous.

Remember when we beat them at home around 2004 with Matt Rose scoring a tidy goal from Left back had a great weekend in the pub back home after that. Remember we lost the return at theirs when Repka took out Tony Thorpe for what was an absolute red card that wasn’t given. Thorpe was never the same after that

Apart from the fact that the 4 blocks of flats that are built are selling upwards of 400k I’m sure this had nothing to do with their decision though. Careful what you wish for because once it’s lost it’s gone forever, give me sore knees every time over a soulless bowl miles from the pitch.

I haven't read the book, but I read quite a bit about it and it's sobering learning the extent to which that sort of thing goes on. Criminals either considered too big to take down or protected by bent coppers. Fair play to journalists like Gillard and the coppers who pursue the big players.

West Ham - Gold, Sullivan and Brady are all c unts. A lot of their supporters were knobs over Tevez, are knobs in general, and are up there with Chelsea when it comes to anti-Semitic abuse. Their owners stitched the Tax payer up with the stadium, but it's a consolation to know that although we're all paying for it, at least they're not enjoying it. Fu ck 'em - I would love it if they go down.

They don’t have a ground to raise finance against but they do have 57000 supporters.

Having a bad time through poor management at the moment but with the unbelievably low rent and size of support I’d rather be in their shoes than ours.

That was the deal of the century and suspect the running track will disappear when the council get sick of funding the place. The rent is pretty much set in stone so assuming they avoid relegation this’ll be a temporary blip.

Their supporters are fast losing the faith . As mentioned above there are loads of them around here . None of them like the new ground and have no time for the "Dildo Bros" as they call them .
Ex season ticket holders who live around me now only do away games , they used to get the hump when I mention asset stripping but not now.

Gold did an interview recently when he said his greatest acheivement was moving the "Football Club" to the "Olympic Stadium" ... the lack of awareness is staggering

I believe we drew 1-1 at home with West Ham and beat Sheffield Utd 1-0 at home and in the reverse fixtures lost 1-0 to West Ham and drew 0-0 in Sheffield. For some reason we really struggled to score against two poor sides in 75-76.

The issue with West Ham that season is that they were lucky to play us when we not on fire. The 1-1 draw at home was early in the season, so despite the fact we did not lose any of the opening eight games, we did draw five of them so quite a few points dropped then.

The return fixture in January was at the end of another eight game run where we only won twice in December and January so plenty more points lost then. After losing to West Ham I think we won 13 and drew one of the last fifteen matches but of course everyone generally blame Norwich for losing the title but the run at the turn of the year was costly with six matches where points were lost.

I have never liked West Ham since hearing some of their supporters in the early 90's whining that they could beat the top teams but lose to crappy QPR too often. The sort of arrogance where they felt they were as big as Arsenal and should have been challenging them for the title.

What probably made it worse was that we shouldn't have even played them at Upton Park when we did, on January 24th 1976. That was 4th round FA Cup day and it was only brought forward because we were both out of the cup. That was the only first division game played that day.

It was the week after at Aston Villa where our great run of winning 11 of the next 12 (with the lousy Sheff U draw in the middle) started (the 13th game was the Norwich game). If we'd played them when we were supposed to (not sure when it was), I've have fancied us beating them, which ultimately would have meant us winning the league so it's poxy West Ham's fault!

Has anyone got an early programme from that season that gives the date we should have played them away from home?
