'Northern Soul: Still Burning' is a great documentary that covers the history of that niche but rather wonderful music and dance scene of the 1970s. It centres around the Wigan Casino and its amphetamine fuelled all nighters. There was only one other person in the cinema watching the film and she told me she'd been a Wigan Casino regular.
It's certainly worth seeing if you can find a cinema showing it. |  | | |

Watched Lee Cronin's The Mummy. It's barely a Mummy film and more of an Evil Dead sort of thing. Much like Lee's Evil Dead Rise, this is a pretty unpleasant film. Pretty gruesome and nasty but not all that scary. Not bad but a bit lacking. Liked the ending. |  |

I saw Koln 75 today, the film about the classic Keith Jarrett concert, or rather the incredible story about how it came about. The narrative has been embellished for the screen but the crucial facts of the story are correct. I enjoyed it a lot.
The concert was recorded and remains the best-selling solo album in jazz history. It's widely regarded as a masterpiece. | | | |

It reminded me of a Stevie Wonder concert I attended in Accra, Ghana many years ago. He was due to appear with a 24-piece orchestra but they all got lost in transit, including the equipment (Stevie was travelling separately).
A ramshackle piano was eventually commandeered from a nearby hotel and the concert finally went ahead at about 2am the following morning. It was a quite extraordinary performance under the circumstances. | | | |

Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu - an extended TV episode. If you like the TV show, you'll like this.
Supergirl - I thought is was a perfect example of the problem with modern blockbuster cinema. Too bashy crashy, lacking characters, over FX'd and in need of more heart.
Master of the Universe - see above although the lead was better and Jared Leto was hidden behind a ton of makeup. | |

But also genuinely funny. In an insanely uncomfortable, nervous kind of way. Some of the bedroom scenes had people laughing out loud in the cinema whilst hiding behind their hands. Quite an impressive feat. The lead is superb, not sure it would have worked without her commited performance. My wife usually hates horror films but she's been recommending this to everyone .

Two in a week for me.
Firstly Obsession - really dark and twisted psychological horror film with underlying themes about toxic, coercive male behaviour. Great battles between where the control and power lies between the two protagonists in a very scary scenario. Some real jump out of seat moments... highly recommend.
Second - The Christophers - The central performance from Ian Mckellen is superb, ably supported by Michaela Coel, who is a little stiff in parts but rises to the challenge. Both comedic and moving, a great storyline about longing and a love story mixed with art. Really enjoyed it. |  | | |

It won't win any scriptwriting Oscars - but some of the dialogue was quite funny. Samantha Morton was outstanding.
It felt like an old school blockbuster to me: loads of stars, goodies, baddies, monsters, etc. I liked the fact that the 'Gods' weren't in it - it was about the human, not the deity, and Zendaya's Athena being represented in the way we found out later was excellent - the kind of pacing is what Nolan's known for. Nolan's film catalogue is such that I had much greater expectations. My biggest gripe was Tom Holland's performance as Telemachus. On several occasions I thought that he had morphed into Peter Parker.
I agree with your view of Samantha Morton's performance and in regards to Zendaya's Athena. A watchable film but not an epic for me. Perhaps my view will change when the disappointment of expectation subsides. | | | |

Not my cup of tea, Mrs PH into all that stuff. I went for the AC, of which I had three hours of it.
I see we're not talking about Tom Holland's performance; very lightweight. Pattinson was good and I'm sure it'll get something for special effects and that type of stuff. |  |

Yeah it felt very small. And the CGI was poor considering the budget they probably had.
That said, I expected to hate it and didn't.

Disclosure Day...Poor in my opinion...I could have switched off at any point, but it's not my favorite genre so to be expected.
I watched a film called Black Bag this week. Pretty good. Great plot that wasn't too complicated as these things can be, and it didn't have a cr*p ending. It's a spy/thriller type movie with a good cast. |  | | |

Saw Odyssey at the Waterloo IMAX and thought it was incredible, not the best film ever, and probably not even top 5 Nolan, but that kind of film in that format is what cinema is all about.
