Interesting podcast with Marti where they chat for about 5 mins about his time in W12.
Dont be put of with the Norweigen & Swedish language at the beginning as all the Marti stuff is in English. Nice to see the 2 Norweigen journos of the podcast are both Rangers.

"His performance at Leicester was shocking but again he will get a pass from many on that one.. "

No, his performance at Leicester wasn't shocking.

His win rate at Leicester was 35.4%, higher than Stephan's at QPR (33.3%). He was sacked when LCFC were 14th, QPR finished 15th, and LCFC plummeted down to 23rd after he was sacked - suggesting he was overachieving with an absolutely rotten bunch of players at a deeply lost club. They should've kept him and paid the appropriate price for sacking him.

Opinions are free to all and a privilege. But facts matter more in football.

Relevant table with data for that point:

Cifuentes was the 20th best manager (out of 36!) in the Championship last season based on points-per-game, Stephan 22nd.

You mentioned that you think Marti would have done better this season, but, as has been pointed out, Madsen has been a complete different player this season and a big part of our good form. I don’t know what was going on, but there clearly wasn’t harmony during Marti’s time. I also think the fans took to him far too quickly and there’s definitely been questions asked of Stephan that weren’t or haven’t been of Marti.

I also think there’s a massive feeling of distrust towards Nourry that’s driving a lot the sentiment. You may not have been talking directly about Nourry, but he’s part of the Marti narrative.

You’re right about how the season has ended up, but for me this season when we’ve been good it’s been more enjoyable to watch than when we were good under Marti. Also, I question his judgement joining Leicester.

I hear what you’re saying, but I would say that Madsen actually started showing green shoots of form towards the end of his first campaign at QPR. He scored a lovely goal at the end of the season away at Sunderland. I think Madsen’s improvement is far more down to him personally, than any coach.

Part of me missing Marti, is as TK1 said, he gets the club. Even in that little interview he described what makes QPR tick. And if you were in his shoes would you say no to Leicester. Management is so fickle, one minute you’re cock of the walk, the next you’re Alan Curbishley.

I do agree re Nourry, and the pro/anti camps. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth now. I think what does need to be considered though is when next season is at an end. Taking his time auditing the club as well as being the CEO into consideration, he will need to show some real signs of progress.

Marti only managed 29 games at Leicester so a fair comparison would be to look at Stephan’s record after 29 games:

* 11 wins
* 7 draws
* 11 losses
* 40 points

Stephan is one win and two points to the good.

Doesn’t prove anything though because we’ll never know how Marti would have finished the season. These types of comparison are pretty worthless.

Interesting where he goes next. Doesn't seem to be a rush for his services. His record shows that he had us almost relegated twice and put Leicester on that trajectory.

Leicester were a premier league outfit with experienced premier league players on massive wages and with parachute payments and the benefits of ten
years straight in the prem with tv money and massive merchandising revenues that would have been ongoing always stemming from their time as champions.

QPR money has been limited by lower level championship status for years and half our squad was brought in from the lower leagues this last season under Stephan.

Obviously less developed and younger players need a great amount of coaching to improve than players who have seen it and done it and at much higher levels. if as you seem to suggest they didnt play well for Marti, consider that was something a top coach could manage out. He could not achieve that.

So for the qualities of that Leicester squad to be that low 14th is incredibly poor.

And if you are suggesting he has done better than Stephan who was one place lower with much more inexperienced and younger players, who are just developing and needing an arm around the shoulder to do better, to be fair with several players he has done that. Its about getting the most out of what you have at your disposal.

And to also back up an opinion that because the next Leicester manager did even worse somehow means Cifuentes was decent is no argument either.

I really dont get so many fans love in with Cifuentes.

Our young QPR team beat Marti Cifuentes very experienced Leicester team 4 nil and we totally annhilated them that day.

I really cant understand at all so many QPR fans happy to annoint St. Marti and demonise Stephan because he is less edgy. Marti am certain was engineering a move away. He got a move upwards and failed miserably.

It is hard to comprehend.

Anyhow, for me its important we get behind our CURRENT manager and build on the many green shoots we achieved last season.

Cifuentes wanted a step up. He never denied that and he had always done that. Whatever way you wrap it up he failed miserably at Leicester. Whether he gets a chance elsewhere at this level is debatable

The Nourry narrative around Cifuentes i think clouds the issue further.

I cant help but think a lot of this 'meh' attitude towards Stephan is harsh in the extreme. He is our current manager and hope more fans get behind him and give him a great deal more credit for some of the things he has done.

He is far from perfect but thats why he is here, and am hoping we can keep improving.

But obviously there seems to be a strange narrative that a majority would have prefered Cicuentes to still be here.

Ifs, buts and maybes..

Is Cifuentes a better manager/coach than Stephan? Almost certainly not. Their records are pretty similar, but Stephan has coached a higher level and won the French cup.

Stephan is definitely a better head coach for the current setup at QPR under Nourry. He's calm, understated, keeps any ego in check, nice gentle sense of humour, urbane, French, he'll seemingly work with what's given to him, mostly. I like him. I sense the players do too.

But he hasn't connected with the fans anywhere nearly as well as Cifuentes did in more trying circumstances. Why? We always say that a certain kind of personality does well at QPR - cocky, thick-skinned but a little aggy - and Cifuentes had that.

He crucially also says more about what makes QPR QPR in a couple of minutes than any member of the board has managed in a decade. He understood the club. He clearly liked being at Rangers and his story rings true to me. He still lives in London. He definitely would've done another year before moving up the ladder, not sideways. That's not really his move.

Doesn't really matter other than we get so few manager matchups right it seems sad we binned a good one off so quickly. Forza Stephan, but I'll always wonder about Cifuentes/Calm and this squad.

The fact that Marti's story is out there now and rings true, I expect it to be roundly rubbished by anonymous QPR fan accounts on X over the next few days.

Top post.

I certainly wouldn't get into any Stephan v Marti thing (which won't change the issue of Who is QPR Manager? anyway).

Both are decent men who did/do a decent job at QPR IMO. The problems lie entirely elsewhere.

So the green shoots showed themselves whilst Marti was on gardening leave? Marti may have got the club, so did Ainsworth, but I’m not sure the players believed in him.

Anyway, our current system doesn’t allow for the head coach (manager) to manage in the traditional sense. We’ve got the ‘game model’ now. Stephan is basically an avatar of a football manager, as was Marti.

The bottom line is, the owners are not football people. It’s great that they’re ploughing money in, but they don’t know how to put together a successful strategy. They need outside help and that is where the problems come.

I think next season will be interesting.

I'm not "anointing" Marti. If you read my previous post, I think Stephan and Cifuentes are pretty well matched, with Stephan probably better suited to QPR right now under Nourry.

I have absolutely no desire to swap managers or bring back MC this summer and I hope Stephan succeeds. But it's the close season, the other popular threads this week include a former PL player's driving offence and why there are so many Arsenal fans from outside N5, so when our former manager delivers a new interview which blows a hole in our CEO's no comment about firing him due to bogus GDPR or whatever, let's discuss.

Again, you are totally wrong about Cifuentes and Leicester. They plainly did not have a PL squad as they have fallen through the divisions. And it wasn't ten years uninterrupted as they were promoted in 2024 under Maresca.

Marti had less than six months there, was unable to sign players but had a to work with squad of pure poison as we saw after he was dismissed. He had won 38 points with them when he was fired in January. In total, they won 46 points. Just eight more over five months under Championship expert Rowett. When they dismissed MC, they were six points of the play-offs. There's no question that he'd have got enough points to stay up on that projection had they kept him.

Again, facts are freely available for all.

One thing that both Cifuentes and Stephan achieved at QPR are extreme results that should concern all. For Cifuentes, the victories over - ironically - Maresca's all-conquering Leicester away was one of the best tactical displays I can recall with a far, far inferior squad. Also, beating Leeds at home when they desperately needed a win to get automatic was one of the best home displays of the decade (especially if you Google the team we had).

But against that the 1-4 at home to Boro and the 0-5 at home to Burnley were brutal (if both did have reasons behind them).

Stephan has overseen some memorable wins - Pompey, LCFC, Brum and WBA - but we've swallowed defeats in one season that normally should come spaced out across a decade:

7-1 to Cov, 1-4 to Ipswich, 5-0 to Saints and 0-4 to Boro coming in the space of a fortnight, both live on TV...

We accepted them, we took that medicine, but we can't swallow those again. Is it just Championship biz or is it something deeper at QPR? I think it's both but we'll see from August.

Cifuentes v Stephan shouldn't be a culture war thing. The club, how it performs across different managers, including Warburton pre-dating Nourry, the wild dips in form...that's worth keeping in mind.

I liked Marti. And I like Stephan. Is that allowed? People can rate both coaches. It’s not “either/or”.

Ultimately, I don’t think the Head Coach is the problem, or, indeed, the solution. I think that rests elsewhere.

100% this.

Dredging up the Marti debate now doesn't help any of us.

It just distracts from the real problems within our current setup, specifically the makeup of our squad and the fitness and injury record of our players.

I supported Marti when he was here, and I support Stephan while he's here.
Both put out teams that delivered both brilliant and baffling results. I think that is as much on the clubs recruitment as it is on either of them. Neither have done enough (nor been here long enough) for me to follow their careers after they leave, unlike Venables, Francis, Holloway and Warnock.

I despair at the managerial carousel we've had, and wish we could have some stability in that position. That doesn't seem to be the modern way though.

Transparency about what happened to Marti, how this club treats it's staff, and the processes and criteria for recruitment and termination, absolutely helps us.

Pushing for that isn't the same as dragging it up.

I want to understand better what happened to Kolli, Marti, Furlong, Kelman, and Andy Evans etc and why some of them are critical about what is going on internally.

But we're not going to get any transparency.

The club says one thing.

Marti says the opposite.

They can't both be telling the truth.

But only a small number of people know what that truth is, and they are not going to tell us.

I didn't want to see Marti go but whether he jumped or was pushed is irrelevant now. We all need to move on from it.

I am not particularly interested in any kind of to and fro on this.

Cifuentes did well for us and so has Stephan. I feel Cifuentes for all his qualities was not a great fit for Leicester and performed poorly. You feel he did the best he could with a tough hand. Fair enough thats your opinion. No problems with that. Agree to disagree myself.

Personally, i am baffled though, by the overall difference in general of fans seemingly overwhelmingly taking to Marti but yet very few have taken to Stephan at all.

Because, i think, if you sack Cifuentes , then 1. You need a good reason for it. 2. The next manager has to be better.

I don't want a back and forth either.

My point is that the fans won't get accountability from the club if they continue to be divided, which is currently the case.

The Marti issue continues to be very divisive - particularly along age lines.

That's why we need to move on from it.

Only when the fans find common cause will they be able to pressure the club.

By all accounts a lot of the younger fans are getting fed up with the injury situation and asking questions about the value of Ben Williams.

We need to build on the concerns around injuries and find agreement within the fans instead of continuing to disagree about a manager who left the club a year ago.

I get it, but those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

That Leicester squad was assembled at great expense and many players had played at a higher level. Someone like Harry Winks should walk into most Championships starting line-up.
James, Monga and Fatawu are all good footballers.

The fact they have a poor attitude probably speaks more to the way they were managed, either by the club directly or Marti and others after him.

The nearest parallel is when QPR were relegated with a squad on paper capable of mid table.

My two pence on this. I don't think Marti should have been sacked like that, but I also don't think Stephan has done a bad job replacing him.

The last manager I liked before this was def Warburton, although I also remember a lot of dire games under him, he did speak well and I think was proven correct about the youth setup (which did for him at the time)
