The Swiss red wasn't a red it was a second yellow and you'll struggle to find a more obvious example of diving. Think he got what he deserved. He must be amongst the thickest people on the planet to have done that.
I can't get my head around how VAR would watch the Mexico penalty vs England and deem that worthy of overturning a decision to ensure a penalty is awarded... Only then for them to review the challenge on Spence last night with enough conviction that it isn't a penalty to overturn it the other way. Very odd watching it live while half asleep. The way Embolo flung himself over I assumed he’d suffered another freak injury. I was at the Augsburg game where he did his ACL. Strange win for VAR through their umpteenth update of how they use it he gets a second yellow only because the referee initially booked the opponent. If the Swiss are capable of serious anger I imagine he’s getting the Beckham treatment as they’d played really well to get the equaliser which had been coming.

Yeah. Kelly's not really a 'Soccer Guy' so fudges/misreads the details sometimes.
I think his overall point stands though. The big stars get the calls and the media attention plus the crowd can't help but influence the way the way the game is managed.
It's coincidental, but relevant, that Antonio Rattin passed away yesterday. That Argentina/England match in '66 was, I believe, a classic example of unconscious bias on the part of the referee, or so it seemed to me at time. It was a blistering hot day. Both teams were playing nasty and the crowd was getting really ugly. IMHO the German ref, probably unconsciously, played the odds by sending off Rattin in order lower the overall temperature. It's technically wrong but in the circumstances understandable if not forgiveable. [Post edited 12 Jul 18:23]
